why apply for a scholarship at UNSW?
Kate Mccutheon mining engineering // Narooma high School // UNSW co-op program Scholarship
for me, a UNiverSiTy eDUcaTioN meaNT moving away from home. coming to uni from a rural area seemed quite financially daunting. it was important to me to be able to balance my academic studies with my desire to get involved in uni life.
having a scholarship means i can devote my time to getting involved with all the activities happening on campus, off campus and my academic studies, as opposed to juggling my time around a part time job.
When i came to the open day at UNSW the campus was so vibrant – there was so much activity happening and it felt like a fun place to be. like everyone, i had a lot of questions about my course so before i made my final decision it was great to be able to phone up and talk to a senior lecturer from the School of mining engineering.
as part of my scholarship i’ve had the opportunity to meet some great people and make friends with people from a myriad of disciplines, as well as completing industrial training (as part of my UNSW co-op program scholarship), forming networks and making industry contacts.
During my time at uni, i have been to cambodia with UNSW habitat for humanity, and whilst staying in one of UNSWs residential colleges, New college, i got involved with lots of social events, committees and was on heaps of sporting teams. There’s so much to get involved in. i even raised sponsorship money from industry, organised accommodation and shirts for our mining events two years in a row.
in 2007 i became a student ambassador for the faculty of engineering. enjoying my engineering course, i now share my experience with high school students.

kaTe’S key TipS
My key tips for applying for university and scholarships are:
n attend UNSW course & careers Day 6 September 2008 and talk to students and lecturers from the faculties you are interested in and visit the UNSW Scholarships and UNSW co-op program stands.
n Not all scholarships are based on academic merit. They are looking for people who have a keen interest in the field they are applying for and want to get involved in UNSW community life. if you have been involved in lots of different activities during your school years, make sure you list them on the form. if you don’t write it down, no one will know you were involved.
n filling out the scholarship application form requires time, so allow enough time to re-read prior to submitting. it’s time well spent.
n make sure you keep a copy of your application form for your records.
n if you are attending an interview for a scholarship or you are in Sydney for another reason, contact the residential colleges to arrange your college interview at the same time.
fiNally
a scholarship can provide you with financial support towards your degree.
Scholarships based on academic merit or on sporting achievements will be recognised on your Supplementary Transcript that you receive on graduation.
a scholarship can be a fantastic way of demonstrating to future employers that you have excelled.
apply for all scholarships that are relevant for you – the worst they can say is no!

Double Degree in commerce and economics
pursuing this scholarship to me meant striving to achieve the best i could in my high school studies. it is a great reward, both financially, as well as in terms of academic recognition. These were major incentives for me to enrol at UNSW.
The scholarship greatly eases the transition from high school to university, with all the costs of textbooks, food and travel. i’m also excited by the fact that i have been assigned an academic mentor, who will provide valuable guidance during my degree.
The Scientia scholarship gave me greater sense of independence. i feel recognised and valued by the university for my achievement, and i am further encouraged to perform to the best of my ability.
i chose the australian School of Business (UNSW) as it has the reputation as being the best business school in australia in offering a great depth and breadth of programs.
in the future i hope to use the skills i gain from my degree, with the opportunities this scholarship has given me, to promote economic equality on a global scale, in order to better the lives of others living in very unfortunate conditions.
amelia STreeT Scientia Scholar // St catherine’s School
arts/Science Degree
i chose to accept an offer for UNSW’s Scientia Scholarship as it offered me flexibility in my degree and the support of an academic mentor to discuss opportunities for broadening my academic horizons. i also loved the diversity of courses on offer at UNSW.
Taking advantage of the scholarship’s flexibility, and following consultation with my academic mentor, i overloaded in my first year. This included a summer internship.
The support of the Scientia scholarship has allowed me to focus on my studies whilst also giving me the chance to get involved with uni life. one example is my participation in the o-Week volunteering programme. Through these activities, i’ve met heaps of great people and made new friendships, making uni even more exciting!
That said; only accept a scholarship for a program you seriously interested in studying. make the most of your university experience.

“Throughout my schooling years i was always a keen and enthusiastic scientist with dreams of pursuing a future in that profession. i accepted this award because i knew that it would be a valuable contribution towards easing the first year transition into uni. Books, stationary, travel costs, and food all add up bit by bit; but with the aaa Scholarship this has been covered.
currently i’m part of UNSWs advanced Science program and have made new friends as well as challenging myself intellectually. although the idea of being a scholarship recipient at a world-class university such as UNSW seemed attractive, it didn’t contribute towards my decision on studying here. The programs on offer are flexible, versatile, and provided opportunities to benefit both human and ecological societies; which is my prime ambition.”

“half-way through year 12 i didn’t know what i wanted to study or which uni i wanted to study at. my subjects at school were ext2 maths, adv english, physics, chemistry and music 1. for the ‘academic achievement award Scholarship’ available from UNSW you are nominated by your school. each school is allowed to nominate one person, and being chosen for the scholarship led me to look at UNSW as my top uni choice. i soon discovered UNSW offered B mus/B ed, which i was interested in, so i pursued this scholarship by placing UNSW as my 1st preference with Uac.
Being awarded this scholarship means i can pay my first year of fees up-front, which is great. in the future i’d like to be a secondary school music teacher.”

harShi WeeraTUNGemalcolm chaikin Scholarship // B commerce/ B Science // Baulkham hills high School
While searching and applying for Scholarships, i was immediately drawn to the malcolm chaikin Scholarship, primarily due to the abundance of opportunities it provides the recipients. The financial assistance allows focus to shift from earning to pay off textbooks amongst other University payments, to spending greater time on my academics and participation in broader community and UNSW activities.
reflecting on my higher School certificate experience, i have realised the importance of choosing courses that are not only appealing due to their subject content, but also the individual’s ability in performing successfully in the chosen area. it is finding this fine balance, that i believe, has enabled me to accomplish the targets i set at school.
having received this prestigious Scholarship, i look forward to contributing to both UNSW and the broader society, whilst maintaining academic results in my chosen degree.

fioNa kNox malcolm chaikin (Graduate) // kinross Wolaroi, orange // Bachelor of Science
i grew up on a small property outside of orange in central NSW, and completed my school years at kinross Wolaroi School, a local day and boarding school. i was unsure as to what course i was going to do after my hSc, so following a gap year, i finally decided on a Bachelor of Science, majoring in ecology and physical Geography at UNSW, due to the great reputation of UNSW for its science courses.
i applied for the malcolm chaikin Scholarship among others at the last minute, after searching the UNSW Scholarships website. To my shock, i received an interview, and was amazed, when i found out that i had actually received the scholarship!
The scholarship has provided immense assistance throughout my university course, enabling me to support myself away from home. With the help of the scholarship, i have had a greater amount of time to participate in a wide range of activities outside of my course offered by UNSW, including a number of university sports and outdoor activities including bushwalking and diving. The scholarship also assisted me during my 6 month international exchange to exeter University in the Uk as well as a 5 months spent on a conservation project in South africa. Without the assistance of the scholarship, i doubt that i would have been able to undertake such adventures, and still find adequate time for study!
i am extremely grateful to malcolm chaikin and the UNSW scholarships office for the immense help they provided me with throughout my degree, and encourage any potential science students to apply for this, among other scholarships.

i pursued this scholarship because coming into university; i was looking at six to seven years of study. Taking into account the tough study load, i saw a scholarship as a real opportunity for much needed support. The rotary club Scholarship represents a major opportunity for me: meaning i can focus on maintaining decent grades, whilst keeping my social life intact. my parents were also glad!
in the future i hope to go travelling or maybe go on student exchange. further down the track i see myself working in the health sector, but it’s going to take a few more years to get my head around the many sub-branches that exists and decide on a specialization.
