Dr. Jennie Bennett’s contributions as a middle school mathteacher in Texas with Houston ISD have been recognized fortheir creativity and dedication. She is an expert in problemsolving and led the concept development of the problemsolving strand in Holt Mathematics.

Dr. Bennett is a member of many prestigious teachingand mathematics associations, including the BenjaminBanneker Association, for which she served as president,the Association of Supervision and CurriculumDevelopment (ASCD), the Texas Association of SupervisorsMathematics (TASM) , and the National Council of Teachersof Mathematics (NCTM). Dr. David Chard is an expert on how children learn,particularly special education students. He usedthis expertise to plan the instructional design of thelesson development in the Holt middle school andhigh school programs.

Dr. Chard’s research and teaching interests are inthe instruction of literacy and mathematics skillsfor all students, including students with disabilities.Currently, he is the principal investigator on fourfederal research projects on mathematics and readingcomprehension instruction. He has published papers,technical reports, and book chapters on instructionalinterventions and modifi cations in mathematics forstudents with disabilities.

Dr. Earlene Hall is a specialist in promoting theprofessional growth of mathematics teachers. Oneof her primary roles in the Detroit Public Schools isto develop curriculum and provide support throughprofessional development, support teachers inproviding instructional intervention, and evaluate theeffectiveness of mathematics curriculum alignmentwith state and national standards. She contributedto the development of the teacher’s editions of Holt’shigh school series.

Dr. Hall is on the executive board for the MichiganCouncil of Teachers of Mathematics and has servedon several key committees for the MichiganDepartment of Education. She has presented tonumerous organizations on topics related to studentachievement in mathematics and African Centeredmathematics. Dr. Hall is adjunct Professor at WayneState University where she teaches staff development.

Audrey Jackson’s career has been distinguishedby her ability to wear many hats. As a formerelementary school principal in Parkway SchoolDistrict in Missouri, she performed the duties ofteacher, counselor, curriculum leader, and staffdeveloper. She specializes in teaching strategies,and contributed to the development of the teacher’seditions for Holt Mathematics. In her current roleas consultant she assists schools with staffdevelopment, leads workshops on math for teachersand administrators, and trains in best practices asthey relate to instructional strategies.

Ms. Jackson has had extensive involvement withNational Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP),serving on multiple development and steeringcommittees, and she currently serves on the Boardof Directors for NCTM from 2005–2008.

Dr. Paul Kennedy has conducted research on thedevelopment of algebraic thinking by usingmultiple representations and technology. He isoften invited to speak and conduct workshops onthe teaching of secondary mathematics.Dr. Kennedy led the development of Explorationsand multi-step problem solving for the Holt Mathprograms.

An award-winning teacher, Dr. Kennedy is anauthor on seven books and fi fteen articles. He hasdirected several major NSF initiatives, and currentlydirects the NSF Center for Learning and Teachingin the West at CSU. Dr. Kennedy also serves as avisiting faculty member in the University of NotreDame’s graduate ACE teacher education program.

Steve Leinwand specializes in mathematicsresearch and assessment. He is the author ofSensible Mathematics: A Guide for School Leaders(Heinemann, 2000). Mr. Leinwand used his expertisein curriculum development to review the scope andsequence and content development of the highschool program.

Mr. Leinwand is a nationally recognized expert onmath instruction and curriculum development, aformer president of NCSM, and a former memberof the NCTM Board of Directors. He recently retiredas a mathematics supervisor with the ConnecticutDepartment of Education, where he served formore than twenty years.

Freddie Renfro has conducted numerousmathematics training sessions and workshops,and has delivered keynote addresses across thecountry. Her extensive teaching background andeasy-going presentation style led to her role aspresenter for the Holt middle school and highschool programs in the Lesson Tutorial Videos.

Ms. Renfro was a supervisor in the state of Texasfor twenty-one years. Prior to this, she taught mathat the high school and middle school levels. Shehas also co-authored six different mathematicsprograms, including a 1990 Geometry textbookand a high school series in 1997.

Dr. Janet Scheer is an expert in incorporatingmanipulatives into the classroom to improvestudent understanding through concrete examples.Dr. Scheer brought this expertise to the developmentof the Hands-On Labs in Holt Mathematics.

As executive director of Create A Vision, a companythat customizes math staff development for gradesK–12, Dr. Scheer has served as consultant, workshopleader and motivational speaker throughout the US,Mexico, and Europe. She has authored several bookson using manipulatives in the classroom and is anauthor on three editions of Harcourt Math. She hasalso published articles in numerous professionaljournals. Dr. Scheer has taught all grades, including tenyears as a professor of mathematics at Southern IllinoisUniversity, where she also founded and directed theDiagnostics Math Clinic.

Dale Seymour began his career teaching grades7–12. After fourteen years of teaching, he foundedCreative Publications. He later founded DaleSeymour Publications where he served as president.Currently retired, Mr. Seymour has authored andco-authored 107 books, designed more than 100games, posters, and other curriculum materials, andspoken at more than 900 teacher conferences. Holt’snew high school program features a series ofposters designed by Mr. Seymour.

In 1993, Mr. Seymour was awarded the Glen GilbertNational Leadership Award from the NationalCouncil of Supervisors of Mathematics. Theaward recognized his leadership and signifi cantcontributions in the fi eld of mathematics education.

Dr. Bert Waits is the co-founder of the T3 program(Teachers Teaching with Technology), which beganas local training in the use of graphing calculators in1986 and has grown into the world’s largestprofessional training program focused on handheldtechnology in the classroom. He also served as amember of the Board of Directors of NCTM from2000–2003. Dr. Waits brought his expertise inteaching with technology to develop theTechnology Labs in the Holt Math programs.

Dr. Waits has authored numerous math textbooksand more than 70 publications in nationallyrecognized professional journals. He has assisted inthe design of the Texas Instruments family ofgraphing calculators and handheld computers since1998. His current focus is mathematics teachertraining and promoting appropriate use of hand-held technology in the teaching and learning ofmathematics.
