Introduction

This is book about a story of a girl who has been undergoing 3 years

of Graphic Design in Tunku Abdul Rahman College since 2008 and

enrolled in a 3 months practical training in an organization which related

to her major field of studies as required.

The period of this Industrial Attachment has gave her a feeling on a journey of

travelling as her training placement was attached in a software organization

which was out of her practical scope.This industrial training is like travelling

from a place to another place as she had met different people, see & explored

new things, polished & learnt extra skills, and explored & gained extra knowledge.

It is a tough yet plenitude’s life journey of learning.

Life is an unstoppable journey, travels from place to place and there are

interesting stories and adventures at each stop, where I have the inspiration

of having Unstoppable: Life Journey as the title for this book which conveys

essential message and feelings. In these unstoppable life journeys,

we learned to cope well with different people, pushed ourselves to suit with the

environment and situation, then, be able to determine problems and

figure out solutions to overcome it.

This book was emerged in a personal travelling handbook style as to reach

and express her feelings and to share her experiences for these 3 months

of practical training in a semi-formal way. Thus, collage method was

applied as part of the design in order to reach the theme.

I am certain that Unstoppable: Life Journey caters for all readers, full with

relevant information and visuals.

Preface

In the mid year of 2010, I had completed my Diploma in Mass Communication

major in Graphic Design in Tunku Abdul Rahman College. Then, I proceed

to a higher education to Advanced Diploma in Mass Communication

major in Graphic Design in the same potential college after my diploma graduation.

During the trimester of the first year in Advanced Diploma, I had enrolled

in the Industrial Attachment program as all students are required.

My practical training placement was in Malacca and this is a three

months industrial training program. After three years of studies in design

field and three months of practical training, I had a pretty good experience in me.

Therefore, I hope to share some of my master pieces and the experiences

that I gained from my potential training company by showing the environment,

people, and projects that I have involved in.

Very early on in the process, I enlisted the help of my formal supervisor, Alex,

an Art Director of my practical training company. Besides, my Lecturer,

Mr. Michael Goh, who helped in assist and supervise me in completing this book.

Finally, I hope this book will extend learning and shared experience to all the readers.

My Background

I am a Nyonya from Malacca and I am also a 153cm short girl with a dark semi-long hair, covered with significant dark circle and eye bags. I have a pair of 8 inches tiny feet which was as small as a kid’s feet where people used to make fun about it. I have a darker skin color where people used to think that I am a Malay girl or Pilipino which annoyed me a lot. I am an ordinary girl like everyone does.

I have passion in designing , which I am also a student major in Graphic Design. Besides, I am interested in photography , fashion , Art & Design and everything that are creative and extraordinary. Besides, I am a travel/tour lover as I love to travel around places to explore and discover new things that help inspired me in doing things.

Master Piece 1

This is an art piece of a new movie launch for the task of Sales Promotion. This task encourages students to develop a new movie launch and students had to design their very own movie title design, it is up to the students to produce the right tools for sales promotion to suit the movie criteria and to attract the right movie goers. Student designers also have to use these tools to promote awareness and create that excitement. They must justify why proposed the tools and how it can be effective to promote the movie. Besides, we are required to produce five compulsory print items that is most effective to support our promotion proposal and suitable

3D prototypes are suggestive elements in order to create a better visual communication.

Master Piece 2

This is an art piece of Self Promotion for Sales Promotion. This task encourages students to develop a range of new and alternative promotional tools to prompt, attract, induce action, to stimulate a sale, but in this task it would be our personal service as a designer. In this task, we assumed that we have just started our own business in the creative industry and we need to promote

our capability of our services rendered to clients. What would our proposed tools be as incentives to invite our clients to have a relevant, useful and long lasting business relationship with us. Besides, we are required to produce three compulsory print items that is most effective to support our promotion proposal and suitable 3D prototypes are suggestive elements in order to create a better visual communication.

This character was created based on my miserable past and the evolution of the character were created spontaneously. The name Miss.Erabelle came from the word “miserable” and the combination of my nick name “Belle”. The cross logo in red color conveys the meaning of my healing process.

This male character was created as required by a friend. The facial expression and characteristic studies are very important in creating one’s character.

Master Piece 3

The concept of the Olympic symbols came from the idea of the Olympic Flame which flame represented the “endeavor for protection or struggle for victory.” The torch Relay symbolized the passing of Olympic traditions from one generation to the next. The color which was applied on the Olympic symbols is based on the London flag as the up and coming 2012 Olympic to be held in London.

Symbols for Infographic Design. This task helps

students to discover the background history and case

study of previous Olympic symbols and how to

apply infographics to the next event in 2012. Students are to develop six events inclusive of one in

full color. Outcome should communicate the achievement, competitive and friendship. Students

were to discover the latest Beijing Olympic 2008

and make comparison. Besides, we have to use

pictures and the symbols as guide to form new design.

In addition, culture must be distinguish and outstanding with the application of the classic

British heritage.

The objective of this task is to allow the students

to understand the need to apply infographic design

as a method to improve communication with the

targeted audience. Students also will learn to

produce diagrams, charts, symbols, signage systems

and other information design tools from the

information obtained from research by using

design software.

Master Piece 4

This is an art piece of Environmental Design Info for Infographic Design. This task helps students to create suitable design communication and information guide for visitors at a local Zoo. Students will use their creativity to redevelop the environment design using the right approach to help improve the directional systems. The devices would also help to enhance the beauty of the surrounding.

In this task, students were to create a new system all together by adding our own design to reduce complexity and easy to read instruction. Student’s design should be able to add beauty and compliment to the surrounding with added fulfilled forms and structures for the benefit of the target group. B esides, interactive gadgets should be encouraged to create fun and enjoyment rather than a see and go. Colors and shapes are also elements to be observed and applied massively.

The overall concept for environmental design info of Zoo Negara was based on the Pocahontas, princess of the Powhatan Indian which also as a Disney cartoon character. It is a strong character which suitable to apply on the zoo design as Pocahontas trying to protect the land, the forest and their people. The Disney theme song in the Pocahontas cartoon brought up the inspirations of the unity between human and animals.

An information signboard of the Savannah Walk was designed according to the theme with the combination of the picture of a big tree, animals and the Powhatan Indians which carries the meaning of unity. A Powhatan’s feel of photo corner was created and visitors especially children can have the chance to experience the atmosphere as they were provided the Pocahontas’ costumes to rent for photo shooting.

Children World was created with more fancy color on the slide and chair design in order to grab the children’s attention and have fun! The pictures of animals and Powhatan Indian applied on the ceiling art to beautify the zoo. A souvenir store or booth was created with the Powhatan hat as the roof and glasses as the body of the store. The typeface chosen is more likely brings the woody feel as to match the theme.

Job Scope

My responsibilities were to assist the creative group’s (WEET!x2 Art & Design) Graphic Designer who was my supervisor, Alex to complete the tasks and projects which includes brochures, posters, buntings, corporate identity, name card, packaging and mascot design for certain project in order to reduce his workload and an opportunity for me to polish my skills and gain extra experiences on how to cope and deal with clients as to exceed their expectations.

Besides, I also have done some researches for new ideas and inspirations before I started a task or project and look for online tutorials to do some practices on different typography effects and editing skills in order to have a professional and satisfied result in the finishing of a project. Furthermore, as a trainee or future designer, my responsibility is able to take orders, be punctual in both attendance and submission of tasks given which shows our attitudes and passion towards things. In addition, be independent and able to determine problems and figure out solutions to overcome it.

As I was training in the creative group of a software company,

I usually work with my program supervisor in pair. Normally, my

working load is depending on the project that Alex handle as he

lead all the tasks and guiding me patiently by giving relevant

assistance whenever I’m having difficulty in completing the tasks.

Furthermore, we will also help the web designer of this company

to design web layout, create web buttons and web banners if

they request for our help. Sometimes, I worked independently

in completing some small tasks while my program supervisor is

rushing the client’s project to be done in an exceedingly short time.

In WIM Solution office, there are 2 washrooms, a meeting room, a medium office for the top management director and a big room for all the staffs and trainees as its environment is comfortably fully furnish with air-conditioner and desktops.There are mostly male technicians and programmers in the office while there are only four female staffs including trainees or interns. We do cope well among ourselves in helping each other in problem solving at the office and we used to have outdoors activities after our working hours. I do appreciate things that I have learnt from them in exchanging and sharing experiences of their field of studies which helps me in contributing confidence and steady towards difficulties.

Customized Item (Headphone)

This is an extra task which was out of my job scope yet was supported by the name of WIM Solution’s creative group (WEET!x2 Art & Graphic). My task in this project is to create a design for a headphone with the assistance of my supervisor, Alex. First, I have to create a design on digital screen and send it to the client by mail in order to show them the design before it was drawn on the headphones. Further improvement and touch up was needed as well as to exceed the client’s satisfaction. Once the clients are satisfied with the design, then we will proceed to the next step which is to apply the illustrated design on the headphone by manually hand draw. The material applied were Molotow acrylic paint and clear spray while the tools needed were brushes in different sizes. After the design has been done on the headphones, then it will be well-packed and send to the potential clients through express postal.

Project Progression in Detail

In order to exceed the client’s expectations for the finishing result of the project, there are some important steps has to go through before we proceed from task to task. Firstly, communication between clients and designers are important in understanding their needs, requirement and concept of the project mostly through online mailing or by phone calls as well as meeting. After that, first draft or sketches of concept will be produce and discuss before we started the design on digital screen. First design will be sent to the client once it was done. Then, the progression in modify and editing on the design are mostly needed if it is required by the client after further communication. Lastly, latest updates on changes of the design will be send to client’s mailbox and wait for their confirmation response.
