CHAPTER 1INTRODUCTION

Research Objective We, the researchers, aims to know the:

• Reasons of the study participants in taking up Bachelor of Science in Accounting Technology;

• The pains and struggles they have experienced; and

• Their coping strategies.

CHAPTER 2METHODS

Research Design

To achieve its purpose, we, researchers, used qualitative research approach in this study. Among other methods of qualitative research, this study uses phenomenological research design which is a philosophical approach that examines individuals' specific life experiences. With this method, we are certain that the information presented in this study were rich descriptions of the participant’s experiences.

CHAPTER 2METHODS

Participants’ Selection Process

• In selecting the participants for the study, each of us, researchers, suggested as many as accounting technology student we know to become a source of information.

• We observe them during their classes, free time and the times when we have friendly talks with them.

• Also, when we got our chance, we ask them of how was there personal experiences being in the program.

• With those observations and information we obtained from them, we deliberate for possible persons that fits to be a participant in the study.

• Out of fifteen, we selected eleven people to ask if they are willing to be part of and genuinely willing to participate although out the research process. But only eight of them positively respond.

CHAPTER 2METHODS

Source of Information

• The eight chosen participants are all Bachelor of Science in Accounting Technology students.

• Two first year, one second year, two third year and the rest are 4th year students.

• They were composed of three male and five female. • Two of them are sixteen years old, there are also two nineteen years old,

one seventeen years old, one eighteen years old and the other two participants are of age twenty-one and twenty-nine years old.

• Out of eight participants three of them were previously Bachelor of Science in Accountancy students who shifted to accounting technology program.

• One purely accounting technology student.• Two participants from management accounting program were force to shift

to accounting technology program. • One shifty each from architecture and engineering program.

CHAPTER 2METHODS

Research Instrument

We used guided questionnaire and recording devices like sound recorder to record the statements of the respondents.

Open-ended or in-depth interview methods, which suggest that it is possible to unravel a deeper or more essential reality (Berg et al., 2003) than allowed by structured interviewing.

RESEARCH QUESTIONS INTERVIEW GUIDE1. What are the reasons of study

participants in taking up Bachelor of Science in Accounting Technology?

1. How did you know that Bachelor of Science in Accounting Technology exists?

2. Who encourage you and, if there is any, how did he/she influenced you in making such decision?

3. How did you discern your choice of such decision?

2. What are the pains and struggles of study participants?

1. How do you see yourself degraded during classes?

2. How do you see the treatment of College in Accounting Education community between BSA and BSAT students?

3. What are the coping strategies of the study participants?

1. How did you adjust when you were in the situation?

2. Who encourage you and how did he/she influenced you to continue your journey as a BSAT student?

3. What mindset did you establish when you are in the midst of your journey as a BSAT student?

CHAPTER 2METHODS

Exploration Process • Prior to the conduct of interview to the participants, a guided questionnaire

we formulated was corrected by the experts for validation of its contents. • The validated questionnaire with some corrections will be finalized

incorporating the comments and suggestions of the validators. • Right after, a letter of permission to conduct the study was sent to the dean

of the College of Accounting Education. • When the request was granted, the researchers thereafter asked

permission to the chosen participants to conduct an interview. • The interview was done during their vacant time and was thereafter jotted

down all the information and ideas. • Lastly, the gathered data were reviewed and classified according to their

similarities. We gave recommendations after it was analyzed and interpreted.

CHAPTER 3RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

Pains and Struggles of Study Participants

• Most of the participants felt that they were out of place on a classroom setting.• A participant named Maria asked, “Does really University of Mindanao makes a

difference differently? Masyado kasing vain. Literal na mashado!”. • All of them notice that there is really something different like special

treatment. Leny states “Specially pagmag-isturya sila about mock board ug kanang mao makapasar daw kay BSAT man“

• Mr. M. also spoke in a strong voice, “Katung klase sa akong professor ana sya “Oh kinsa mga accountancy diria tapos hands up, tapos kinsa mga BSAT diria? Haaayyy kanang mga BSAT kay mahimu ra nang call center agent”, so sakit sya didto na part…call center agent ra ta.” Then he added, “maski na ginaingun nila na fair lang, ma feel man jud nimu dba? Na mas ginahatagan nila og priority ang accountancy kay dba pag accountancy ginahatagan nilag mga ano kanang bridging tapos kita wala, dba? Kung Invited man lage pero… basta pag accountancy mas prioritize nila tapos ang BSAT kay dli.”

CHAPTER 3RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

Coping Strategies of the Study Participants

All of them are unanimous in deciding to motivate their selves and accept their faith as they stated it. “Anyway when the time passes by, I learn to love this course and I don’t want to take risk. That is why wala ko nagproceed. Anyway I have God with me” Nycy said. Same opinion with Leny, “dawat dawat lang mana”. And was supported by Noimes’ statement, “Acceptance lang man gud akung gebuhat”

Fifty percent of the study participants say that they don’t mind because the course is still accounting and it is not easy also.

Rox made us proud when she says, “I always think of my dream of becoming a CPA someday after I graduated accountancy in the future”. Robi also said, “I always think na magproceed man gehapun ko ug BSA inig naa nakoy work. Just don’t want to take risk”.

CHAPTER 4SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

Summary

This research study used qualitative method with phenomenological thesis design. It sought to unleash the unspoken reality in the College of Accounting Education and also to uncover the pains, struggles and coping strategies of the Bachelor of Science in Accounting Technology students to reveal the implied thoughts and ignored issues.

The study participants shared their reasons why they are in the program, their pains and struggles, and also how they cope with it through in-depth interview method while recording their statements via voice recording device. The study participants are comfortable enough to reveal their heartaches and inside thoughts so that we can establish a strong piece of paper that would help the future researchers and to be a voice for the accounting technology students.

In holistic view, the participants indeed experience discriminations but they choose to accept and ignore the issue for them to move on and use the experience as their motivation.

CHAPTER 4SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

Conclusion

Bachelor of Science in Accounting Technology students are procured by different situations, some are forced to, others doesn’t know because of the dissolution of courses, some of them already knew about the course but has the hesitation to push through and others decided to get involved because of unfortunate-grade-conflicts from a high level course like Bachelor of Science in Accountancy. When the university decided to dissolve the management accounting program, all students were forced to shift in accounting technology program.

Some took the risk, by taking accountancy while others wisely weighted their capabilities and resources in deciding to embrace the world of accounting technology. It is amazing, how participants make practical decisions. “We see no wrong”, this is how we, researchers, would say it considering their reasons were in real deal situation.

CHAPTER 4SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

Conclusion

Discrimination of accounting technology students in some classes serves an eye opener about the implied things that there are misjudgments and tortured thoughts in the minds of the unending criticism from the people around them. No matter how they hide their feelings, eyes itself speaks in behalf of their heart. Because of such experience, the strong personality of accounting technology students are being brag by their low self-esteem for they were so conscious and worried on how other people think about them.

Patience, understanding and acceptance are the effective tools used by the participants to cope with the issue. They choose to ignore it even if there will be no answer after all the struggles they have encountered that might continue until they graduated and cut their college student life. Wisely, they don’t want to seal their lives in the situation. They simply think of practical thoughts to convert negative into strong positive motivation.

CHAPTER 4SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

Recommendation to the University of Mindanao • The University of Mindanao must continue to make effective ways in

making not just the students but also the people in the society be informed about the existence of the Bachelor of Science in Accounting Technology program and impart its importance and contribution in the university and in the society.

• Also, the university must not ignore the pains and struggles experienced by the accounting technology students. The institution must have to make an effective action through assessing the level of importance why these students must not experience such.

• And should establish a program with an objective of making the different organizations in the university be united.

CHAPTER 4SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

Recommendation to the Administrative Staff • The administrative staff must help the university in making the objectives

of the institution be well implemented as well as its mission, vision, and goals to help the Bachelor of Science in Accounting Technology students utilize the given opportunity for the conducive learning to help themselves become a competent leaders and responsible citizen in the society.

• They also must help the institution in making the effective action be possible.

CHAPTER 4SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

Recommendation to the College of Accounting Education • The College of Accounting Education must establish a program with an

objective of abolishing the inferiority complex of the Bachelor of Science in Accounting Technology program.

• The college must help the students to gain confidence and high self-esteem by supporting them in every medium they need to sustain the competitive level of the college.

• The college must address the issue to the faculties involved and make a responsible decision in what effective way should be established.

CHAPTER 4SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

Recommendation to the Accounting Technology Students • The accounting technology students must help themselves not just to

accept and ignore the issue but also should establish a mark that they are not inferior in any ways, they must prove to everyone that they could also be a front liner in this university.

• They should not be afraid in dealing the situation, it’s like never let them win without giving a good fight but of course with courtesy.

CHAPTER 4SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

Recommendation to the Parents of Accounting Tech. Students • Parents should boost their child’s potential by encouraging them to give

more and not to be afraid of pythons in the Amazon. This world is like a jungle that we need to be brave enough to survive. We, the researchers, believes that the virtues of a student starts from their family practice at home. When their children start to accept things as it is and as they are, they will become realistic. Subsequently, faith builds in their selves in the direction they have chosen.
