A Favored Soul can choose to use either Wisdom or Charisma as its main casting stat and their DC’s and Spell points will be determined by the higher of the two. Although Favored Soul is often associated as simply a Cleric with more spell points it is important to look at them as their own class that has its own benefits. While both playstyles are viable at the endgame on lower difficulties it is important to note that higher reaper is more dependent on a DC Favored Soul. Nuking is less optimal because nuking casters tend to burn out on spell points and resources. I will also be including a breakdown of the War Soul archetype and how it fits into the current endgame. Overview of the Class

Favored Souls in their simplest form are divine casters like clerics that have less spell choices per rest but get more spell points in which to cast their chosen spells

A Favored Soul can choose to use either Wisdom or Charisma as its main casting stat and their DCrsquos and Spell points will be determined by the higher of the two Although Favored Soul is often associated as simply a Cleric with more spell points it is important to look at them as their own class that has its own benefits Favored Soul is a class capable of 3 major build types

Wisdom vs Charisma The most interesting thing about Favored Souls that other casters donrsquot have the luxury of is the choice of which stat to use for casting You can choose whether you want to use Wisdom or Charisma for a casting stat as well as a stat to use for to-hit and damage with your deity favored weapon Either way you end up going you will find success both at endgame and while leveling Some pros and cons of the build include the following

Wisdom Pros

- Mass Frog for an instakill at cap- Healing Hands (if Aasimar) Potential multiclass with monk - Higher Will saves- Festive Augment for +2 wisdom

Cons- Harder to gear around Lower potential maximum than charisma

Charisma Pros

- Higher potential maximum - Easy to gear - High UMD - Higher Energy Burst DC if Nuker

Cons - No dependable Mass Frog - Costs a Feat for will saves boost

TomesWhen purchasing tomes you first want to consider what casting stat and archetype you are going with Once you figure that out you can look to see which tomes you should get as soon as possible The tomes here are listed by order of importance

ConstitutionOf course more HP and Fortitude saves

WisdomIf you are a Wisdom caster this is a necessity because it boosts DCrsquos and spell points Even if you are playing a charisma caster it is nice to have this for the boost to the heal skill

CharismaNo matter what kind of Favored Soul you are Charisma is a nice tome to get It gives DCs and spell points if you are playing a Charisma based Favored Soul as well as a boost to UMD and other Charisma based skills such as Intimidate

IntelligenceThis will let you have more skill points to spend while leveling up in heroics It also boosts your spellcraft skill If it is high enough it gives a nice boost to spellpower

StrengthNot necessary in any way but may be nice to have extra carry space in your backpack A Strength tome will give you a boost to skills such as jump and balance You may also want some Strength for if you take divine might

DexterityUnless you are going to splash in levels of monk or rogue to get evasion then you donrsquot need a dexterity tome If you can afford a Dexterity tome then get one for its smaller benefits to saves and skills

2

HealNo matter what kind of Favored Soul you play you want to always keep your heal score maxed When it goes higher you gain positive spellpower This ultimately makes your heals hit harder and makes healing cost less spell points over time

Use Magic Device (UMD) Everyone knows UMD It lets you use scrolls and wands that donrsquot belong to your class This means that in a pinch you could pull out scrolls for buffs such as greater heroism for more skills or even something like fire shield to take less incoming damage from fire or ice

Authorrsquos Tip

Noteworthy skills often include things like intimidate or jump that when needed are nice to have Intimidate can save your party from a sticky situation and you never know when you have to jump over that next monster to avoid dying

Enhancements

Favored Souls have 3 enhancement trees to choose from They are Angel of Vengeance (AoV) also known as the DC caster tree WarSoul also known as the melee tree and Beacon of Hope (BoH) which is best known for its healing and buffing abilities A typical nuker type caster will put the majority of its points into Angel of Vengeance with splashes into the other trees for low hanging fruit enhancements that help out your build The same goes for a DC casting type Favored Soul You will find yourself putting a majority of your points into the Angel of Vengeance tree however you will be taking different abilities than a nuker will A Warsoul will be mainly focused on using the Warsoul tree and will only dip into the other trees if they can get a big payoff for a small amount of action points (AP) I recommend that you look at the trees fully before spending any points in them and carefully plan where points are going to go to save the time and platinum it takes to reset enhancements

SkillsAs a Favored Soul you will find yourself focusing on 2 or 3 skills Depending on your build you may decide to go with other skills that you deem necessary

Race OptionsFavored Soul like every class can be played well using any race you may choose However there are only 3 races that truly excel when trying to min max

Dragonborn The Divine Sorcerer If you are set on playing a full Charisma based Favored Soul then look no further than Dragonborn It has enhancements in its racial tree that boost spell points spell penetration and Evocation DC which is what most of your damage spells scale off of It gives you the ability to start with a Charisma score of 20 which is 1 more DC and more spell points than other races can offer Also you get to be a dragon Well sort of anyway

Aasimar

The Master Race I mean the one that boosts Wisdom and has a solid enhancement tree Their racial tree offers the spell points and spell penetration tradeoff similar to Dragonborns in the form of the Arcanum enhancement Aasimar also gives you a stance from creation that grants extra tactics or hit points when toggled depending on the Bond you choose The best part about Aasimar is that you can still choose to use either Wisdom or Charisma with it It is true that they get an inherit boost to Wisdom at creation but their enhancement tree accommodates between Wisdom Strength or Charisma

Aasimar also offers Healing Hands (along with upgrades of up to a maximum of 7 uses that regenerates every 3 minutes) which is a very powerful healing abili-ty based off of Wisdom The thing that makes Aasimar so versatile is the fact that you can use the Aasimar Divine Purpose to boost your Charisma by a maximum of +3 up to 4 times per rest for one minute displaying your chosen Bondrsquos featured wings This tree is excellent and allows for a build with permanent bonuses and less payoff or shorter term effects with potentially more of a boost The biggest reasons to go Wisdom over Charisma is Mass Frog and Healing Hands

Not a free-to-play race

5

Human

The Standard Everyone knows the human race Itrsquos simple and basic starting with no inherit boosts to any stat instead they gain an extra 4 skill points and +1 higher per level than any other race innately Human allows you to select any sort of build path because you can pick from any stat in its enhancement tree Be wary that if you go Human you will struggle with spell penetration in some higher difficulty content that requires every single point

Deities

As a Favored Soul you get to choose which Deity you want to follow beginning at level 1 This choice gives you a weapon type that you can use and have Wisdom or Charisma whichever you choose to hit and damage This is entirely choice depen-dent If you want to swap from Wisdom to Charisma midway it requires a full lesser reincarnation and cannot simply be swapped at Fred This will be a feat you get to choose at level 2 Knowledge of Battle allows you to use Wisdom to hit and dam-age and Grace of Battle utilizes Charisma This only applies to your Deity Favored Weapon and only works if at least HALF of your total heroic character level are Favored Soul levels

Read more about the deities by visiting the ddowiki page for a full list of favored weapons and abilities for each deity At level 6 each deity is granted a special active feat that gives you a different bonus based on which deity you went with at creation Additionally as a Favored Soul at level 7 you get to choose between Stout of Heart and Purity of Heart Stout of Heart grants 10 Hit Points per Favored Soul level and Epic levels for a total of 300 on a pure Favored Soul Purity of Heart grants 20 spell points per Favored Soul level and an additional 30 for each Epic level Personally I would go with Purity of Heart It will end up giving you more return than Stout of Heart because of the way the spell points scale More hit points only help in situa-tions where you arenrsquot being one shotted

Important Spells Breakdown

CometfallCometfall is a very powerful spell that scales off of impulse or force spell power It hits an area of effect and does bludgeon damage to everything in its area as well as knocking down targets if they fail a reflex save

SunboltThis comes from Angel of Vengeance and scales well into epics because of the master of light feat that you can take from level 24 and beyond You can also get a second spell-like ability (SLA) form of this spell from Exalted Angel It is a ray spell that has double cast distance and pierces through monsters allowing you to line up multiple targets and go to town

The ldquoNukerrdquo Favored Soul

Nuking is based on the idea of dumping spell points rapidly to output as much damage as one can in the shortest amount of time This playstyle is very common among the general player base of Favored Souls and is often the one most criticized While nuking can be fun it is important to know that this play style tends to sputter in sustainability in higher difficulties due to monster HP inflation and Reaper damage penalty scaling Nuker Favored Souls use 4 major spell power types fire force light and of course positive for your heals

It is imperative to maintain spell power as high as possible to maximize spell damage output To do this you want to look for items with Combustion Impulse Radiance and Devotion The best thing that I can recommend is to find a spell power item with the maximum bonus for the type you use the most To fill out your other spell powers you can either find a Potency item or put in augments to fill the gaps in your gear Once you have your spell power set up you need to know which spells you should and should not use when nuking

6

One last noteworthy spell to mention is Soundburst One last noteworthy spell to mention is Soundburst Since you are only going to max one casting stat being Wisdom or Charisma you should have a DC that is high enough to land on some monsters Soundburst is an Area of Effect (AoE) stun that will make your spells do 15 times the dam-age to creatures that fail the save It doesnrsquot work on red or purple named bosses so remember to pick targets carefully

Blade BarrierOf course this has to be included The Favored Soul staple in heroics can scale well into epics if you keep your spell power and DC up You can lay down this wall of blades and kite monsters around it It does slash damage and may be resisted by some monsters but still packs a punch and is great for big packs of mobs Quick Tip Monsters only take damage a second time if they walk out of the blades once they are in it Make sure to kite in large enough circles to maximize your damage output

Spells to Avoid You want to avoid using spells that donrsquot scale well with damage dice or try to do so many things with one spell Good examples of this are Flame Strike and Holy Smite Flame Strike has poor scaling but sounds like an amazing spell that does fire damage and bane damage Unfortunately the spell falls flat on its face and often ends up being saved by tons of mobs and doing next to no damage Holy Smite is another spell that looks amazing on paper Its damage is abysmal and a lot of the game is immune to its damage type affecting only evil targets Be wary however if you are a chaotic aligned Favored Soul you will not be able to cast this spell at all One thing to note with Holy Smite is that its blind effect will instakill eye creatures and can be useful for big groups of mobs

7

The DC Caster

Being a DC Favored Soul caster is easier than a lot of people make DC casting out to be The first thing you want to make sure of is always having the highest DC you can possibly have This means upgrading gear while leveling and having all forms of bonuses for stats at cap

When looking to raise DCrsquos on a Favored Soul there are 4 main ways to do so You can raise the number of Favored Soul levels you have (ie caster level) raise the stat you are using for casting (Wisdom or Charisma) pick up items that boost a specific set school of spells or supplement with an item that boost all schools for a lower amount or you can take the spell focus feats for a school of your choosing As a DC Favored Soul all of your spells that do not do damage such as stuns and enchantment spells will require a spell penetration check against monsters with spell resistance Spell Penetration is calculated by your caster level (20 as a pure Favored Soul) plus a 1d20 There are feats you can take to raise your base Spell Penetration like Spell Penetration Past Life Wizard (passive) as well as certain abilities in the enhancements and epic destinies you can take A Spell Penetration of around 68 is required to be no-fail in the hardest content at end game

DC casting Favored Souls typically revolve around 3 main schools of magic This includes Evocation Conjuration and Enchantment You can also choose to take spells from Necromancy and Transmutation if you can find the room for the gear

The current standard for Wisdom breakdown is as follows

+20 Enhancement+9 Insightful+4 Quality+4 Artifact or Set Bonus+2 Festive Bonus+2 Exceptional+2 Profane

43 Total

88

EvocationYour main spells that you will be using from this school are your damage spells and stunning type spells The biggest one you want to get from this school is Implosion Implosion is an instakill aura that lasts for 8 seconds and kills one target every 2 seconds for a total of 5 targets One great thing you can do with Implosion is pick which monster it is targeting When you activate the spell it will target a monster you hit with your weapon before another monster that is just in its range This tactic can be used to guide where your Implosion hits if you want to use it around a monster that may be immune to it

Another noteworthy spell that isnrsquot used for damage from this school is the previously mentioned Soundburst It is an AoE stun that when used correctly and with a good enough DC is amazing from spell level 2 when it becomes available all the way until the endgame One final spell to note when dealing with Evocation is the lesser known spell Orderrsquos Wrath It is another AoE spell that stuns all Chaotic targets It has a very large cast radius on it and lands on most targets in the game because of monster alignments A typical Favored Soul will also need a good Evocation DC so that monsters donrsquot save their damage spells causing them to take half damage Knowing is half the battle when using spells like these If you know more specifics about monsters like saves and alignment you can get more bang for your buck with Evocation spells

ConjurationHere in the Conjuration school there is only 1 major spell to focus on and thatrsquos Cometfall Cometfall is a Conjuration spell that you can pick up beginning at level 12 and is a nice AoE knockdown spell that you can have two of if you take the SLA version from the Angel of Vengeance enhancement tree If combined with Soundburst and other Crowd Control (CC) type spells you can stop monsters from moving entirely

EnchantmentIn this school we look at another small set of spells First we look at Command and Greater Command The former is a single target enchantment spell that knocks down a target creature and lasts for 6 seconds Greater Command is the upgrade of the level 1 spell Command Starting from level 10 it is an AoE version of Command You can cast it at a group of monsters and knock them all down for an extended period of time up

9

to 2 minutes on a capped Favored Soul (prior to Reaper spell duration reduction) One final spell to look at in this school is Hold Person Although it is not an AoE hold spell it is great for targeting humanoid bosses that are not red or purple named It will hold them in place for a long duration and grants everyone 15 times the damage when they hit the monster You may also take spells such as Symbol of Stunning from this school to do things like stun and charm Because of the limited spell slots a Favored Soul gets it can be tough to fit these in at the levels they become available

NecromancyAlthough this school of magic isnrsquot very well represented on a Favored Soul a few key spells come from it First off we have the instakill spells that Favored Souls get being Slay Living and Destruction They are essentially the same spell except for the fact that Slay Living can only be cast at a touch range (mobs close to the caster) and Destruction has the range of a normal Favored Soul spell You can also take Energy Drain starting at level 18 which can be used to give negative levels to monsters who are not immune This allows you to lower the saves of a monster to possibly land a CC spell or instakill them

TransmutationMASS FROG THATrsquoS IT Seriously take Mass Frog as a level 28 Primal Destiny Feat to have another instakill and just slot in a transmutation item to make it land on anything in the game

General takeaway from the DC caster is that you will not be doing damage in a traditional sense You will be stunning instakilling and crowd controlling monsters so that others can do more damage or avoid being hit themselves The best kind of Favored Soul is one that can do the job of CC while also healing especially in reaper where damage casting becomes undoable without wasting a ton of resources and taking a lot of time DC Casting Favored Soul is the less popular choice when it compares to nuker but it tends to see more play in difficult content where nuking falls off Keep in mind that as long as you keep your DCrsquos up to the max they can be at then you will have a great time with your build

10

When you are leveling you will want to consider the Quicken Feat to speed up your cast time on spells This will help you get those much needed spells off without having to roll a Concentration check to see if you get interrupted One other feat you want to look at is Heighten Spell It will raise the caster level of your spells to the highest level of spell that you can cast This means that you can cast that level two spell Soundburst as a level 9 spell

The Warsoul

The Warsoul is a Favored Soul that uses the powers of its chosen deity to wield a weapon with extra power than someone with no faith Sounds awesome right Itrsquos nothellip Itrsquos horrible even after the update it just got to its enhancement tree and abilities If you really want to play a melee Favored Soul there are several builds you can try using a deity weapon and Wisdom or Charisma to hit and damage Your best bet will probably be to multiclass and keep half of your level Favored Soul so you still get the to hit and damage benefit of your casting stat

They may be fun and have some flavor to them but in the endgame especially Warsoul wonrsquot see much play If you can find something that works for you thatrsquos great They will not be top tier builds however so donrsquot plan on bringing them into difficult content

11

This is the part about Favored Soul that a lot of people start to question Most people who play divine casters Cleric or Favored Soul think about healing second because the game has become very self-heal centric Your job as the healer is simple Keep everyone alive

Thatrsquos all there is to it It is a lot more difficult than just saying this on paper Healing takes a lot of skill and practice It is a big role to play especially once reaper mode comes into play where people canrsquot self heal anymore To heal well you always want to make sure you are watching the cooldowns of your healing spells and keeping in mind what you can cast and when you can cast it again Another major aspect of healing is to be efficient with your spell points

Even though a Favored Soul will get a lot of spell points you will run out if you donrsquot manage them correctly This involves casting single target heals only when one person is in need of healing or directing people to group up together for a much more efficient mass heal Cure Mass spells are great and come into play beginning at level 10 with Cure Light Wounds Mass At level 18 you will be given the opportunity to take Mass Heal as a spell Donrsquot do it Itrsquos a trap Mass Heal while it is a very powerful spell has a long casting animation that makes it inefficient to cast You are better off casting Mass Cure spells and then throwing a Heal spell on someone who specifically needs it like a tank or someone taking a lot of incoming damage as an individual With the Quicken Spell feat you will be able to cast Mass Cures one after another if necessary with a long downtime in between them

While you are healing you will find that people will complain about the way you are healing and even about when they donrsquot get a heal It is important to let this blow over and move on If you are a newer healer the best thing you can do is let people know Healing will take time and practice to get down to a science but the best way to perfect it is by doing it over and over again Donrsquot let the hatred and toxicity of people get you down about playing a healer It is fun to be the one in control of peoples lives one you get experienced enough and has a lot of payoff in the end of a quest or raid

HEALING

12

Epic Destinies Raiding vs Questing

As a min-max Favored Soul there are only two real Epic Destinies that you will find are helpful Those being Exalted Angel and Unyielding Sentinel

Exalted Angel will be your questing destiny In most quests you will find that the DC boosts are nice to have and that the quest will be easy enough to do your thing be it nuking or DC casting while also still healing the entire party If you find yourself struggling to keep people alive even in quests then itrsquos safer to stop being a backup DC caster or instakilling and just drop back and heal This destiny has an SLA for Cure Moderate Wounds Mass as well as Divine Wrath which is an AoE light spell that heals your allies while hurting monsters in the affected area One other neat thing you can do with Exalted is grab Rebuke Foe This is an ability that you charge up by casting light spells at enemies Then it lets you apply a debuff to a monster that makes them take up to 25 more physical and light damage when fully stacked

Unyielding Sentinel is going to be your main raiding destiny You will find that when you are in a raid with 12 people there will almost always be a real DC caster that can do your side job for you You will be in this destiny and stepping back to become a full healer You will have your hands full keeping everyone alive and this destiny gives a nice healing SLA in Renewal It is a heal over time spell that is very cheap and efficient As a full healer you will want to use Vigor of Battle or Stand Against the Tide stance depending on your situation This will either give you more hit points or knockdown immunity respectively Both of these can be crucial to staying alive and healing in a raid

While running in these destinies you will want to use your twist of fate slots for things like extra spell penetration or DCrsquos from trees like magister You will also want to look at using abilities like Rejuvenation Cocoon to assist with super cheap healing You will get 4 twist of fate slots at level 30 and you gain a fate point for every 3 levels you gain in epic destinies

REAPERAs the guide has mentioned a few times DDO has something called reaper mode I donrsquot want to go into a lengthy explanation about it Itrsquos essentially a challenge difficulty where soloing is frowned upon due to debuffs to damage output and self-healing It has a total of 10 difficulty levels measured by skull for you to choose from Each skull increases these debuffs on the character and lowers your damage output further It is recommended that you go with a group to run reaper and that everyone finds a way to heal others in some way to help get past the self-healing penalties The important thing to note about reaper for this guide is what kind of Favored Soul will see the most play in reaper since it is a popular difficulty

Nuker Favored Soul falls way behind DC caster here for several reasons As a nuker you rely on spell damage to complete quests and with reaper debuffs to damage output all of your damage spells will hit for less damageIncreasingly so if you are raising the number of skulls you are running This causes a lot of damage based casters to become almost useless as you increase the skulls beyond two or three If you want to run low skull quests then you can stay as a nuker but you have to play situations a little more carefully and you have to watch your spell points closely to make sure you donrsquot run out too soon

Reaper is where the DC caster really begins to shine If you are running the game on non-reaper difficulties you will find the game fun and pretty easy as a nuker build The moment you step into reaper you will see that more DC casters come out to play because they have a ton of use Not only can the DC caster instakill those tricky mobs and champions but they can also CC the ones that canrsquot be instakilled DC casters make questing in reaper more tolerable by bringing to the table an aspect that doesnrsquot see as much use in non-reaper They allow other people to do more damage while they themselves stop doing damage to keep the monsters from hurting the party This is essential to

14

the team aspect of running on reaper mode Without a good CC caster and a good healer it is hard to do higher skull reapers without a lot of pain and misery Lucky for us a well built Favored Soul can do both

Warsoul is not a reaper viable build and therefore will be left out of this part of the guide If you choose to run it in reaper know that you will find yourself struggling to do so You may be able to get by with some lower skulls in heroic levels but once you jump to epics it is hard to get anything done With a proper group you will still have the ability to be carried through the quest Try not to join a group if you know that you are of no use

Before I post my personal build I want to give a shout out to the people that helped me with some ideas in this guide

Thanks Hephaestas and Seraphemia on Ghallanda for helping me come up with stuff for this guide and a second thank you to Heph for doing all the design aspects that are included in the guide

Thank you for reading my guide to Favored Soul and I hope it helps you while playing the coolest class in the game

HEALING

+20 Enhancement+9 Insightful+4 Quality+4 Artifact or Set Bonus+2 Festive Bonus+2 Exceptional+2 Profane

the team aspect of running on reaper mode Without a good CC caster and a good healer it is hard to do higher skull reapers without a lot of pain and misery Lucky for us a well built Favored Soul can do both

Read more about the deities by visiting the ddowiki page for a full list of favored weapons and abilities for each deity At level 6 each deity is granted a special active feat that gives you a different bonus based on which deity you went with at creation Additionally as a Favored Soul at level 7 you get to choose between Stout of Heart and Purity of Heart Stout of Heart grants 10 Hit Points per Favored Soul level and Epic levels for a total of 300 on a pure Favored Soul Purity of Heart grants 20 spell points per Favored Soul level and an additional 30 for each Epic level Personally I would go with Purity of Heart It will end up giving you more return than Stout of Heart because of the way the spell points scale More hit points only help in situa-tions where you arenrsquot being one shotted

ddowikicompageDeity-based_feats

EvocationYour main spells that you will be using from this school are your damage spells and stunning type spells The biggest one you want to get from this school is Implosion Implosion is an instakill aura that lasts for 8 seconds and kills one target every 2 seconds for a total of 5 targets One great thing you can do with Implosion is pick which monster it is targeting When you activate the spell it will target a monster you hit with your weapon before another monster that is just in its range This tactic can be used to guide where your Implosion hits if you want to use it around a monster that may be immune to it

EnchantmentIn this school we look at another small set of spells First we look at Command and Greater Command The former is a single target enchantment spell that knocks down a target creature and lasts for 6 seconds Greater Command is the upgrade of the level 1 spell Command Starting from level 10 it is an AoE version of Command You can cast it at a group of monsters and knock them all down for an extended period of time up

to 2 minutes on a capped Favored Soul (prior to Reaper spell duration reduction) One final spell to look at in this school is Hold Person Although it is not an AoE hold spell it is great for targeting humanoid bosses that are not red or purple named It will hold them in place for a long duration and grants everyone 15 times the damage when they hit the monster You may also take spells such as Symbol of Stunning from this school to do things like stun and charm Because of the limited spell slots a Favored Soul gets it can be tough to fit these in at the levels they become available

Reaper is where the DC caster really begins to shine If you are running the game on non-reaper difficulties you will find the game fun and pretty easy as a nuker build The moment you step into reaper you will see that more DC casters come out to play because they have a ton of use Not only can the DC caster instakill those tricky mobs and champions but they can also CC the ones that canrsquot be instakilled DC casters make questing in reaper more tolerable by bringing to the table an aspect that doesnrsquot see as much use in non-reaper They allow other people to do more damage while they themselves stop doing damage to keep the monsters from hurting the party This is essential to

the team aspect of running on reaper mode Without a good CC caster and a good healer it is hard to do higher skull reapers without a lot of pain and misery Lucky for us a well built Favored Soul can do both
