UNPLUG has a three-fold mission which unites the communities, Exchange

Participants, and High School students in a collective effort to solve and

alleviate the issues of energy crisis in Mindanao. It envisions to identify and

answer the underlying problems of electricity shortage if not now, in the

future and the increasing electricity bill of household and commercial

establishments. Exchange Participants are immersed to communities and

are expected to come up with a comprehensive report/research about

the routinely manner of how household uses their electricity and recognize

the possible techniques to at least help in energy conservation. Thus

organizing a energy awareness forum.

Page 4: Unplug 2 0 project booklet

BACKGROUND

Mindanao has been experiencingcontinuous rotational brownout in thepast few years. This is because of thedeficiency in the supply of energy notonly in the cities but in the neighboringprovinces as well. Today, Davao City itselfis facing this rotational brownout asdeficiency in power supply rises. PowerCrisis is a world phenomenon. Thishappens all throughout the planet. In2009, the council of Davao City hasattempted to draft a code that willeventually cut down spending on fueland electricity and save the environmentwithout compromising productivity.

MISSION

PROJECT UNPLUG aims to improve acommunity, help the government andeducate high school students, aboutthe Energy Conservation in Davao City. The intention is to change the lifestyleof the citizens with their consumptionof electricity. We want to alleviate thesituation by conducting surveys andpresenting the data to Department ofEnergy. And lastly, we intend to informstudents and the citizens of Davaoabout the problem through lecturesand forums.

The exchange participants will be divided into groups to undergo community immersion and peer education. The Exchange participants will create their own energy survey for the community that they will have their immersion with. They will also have the chance to have a consultation session with local experts from the Department of Energy.

Community Immersion:Exchange participants will have to identify the underlying problems present in the community in line with Energy and thesevolunteers should be able to present simple to complex ideas on how these households can improve their ways of life throughthe decrease of energy consumption and help solve the current and future problems relating to Energy crisis.

Peer Education:Exchange participants will relay the results of their research and survey outputs through a presentation to schools located inthe same community they have conducted the research. They will reiterate on the techniques in which these High SchoolStudents in their own ways could help in solving the present and/or future and more looming energy crisis. For a greater impact, the exchange participants will conduct an eco-energy fair that will invite people from the differentsectors of the society to help in discussion of the current realities that is being faced by the city.
