Background:Endotracheal suctioning is able to create extremely high flows that are potentially able to eliminate the complete volume delivered to the lungs by the ventilator
High sub-atmospheric suction pressure can result in:- Partial or total elimination of gas volume in the lungs- Alveolar collapse- Atelektasis- Hypoaemia- Hypercapnia
Endotracheal SuctioningEndotracheal Suctioning
The extent of the effect is directly related to the size of the suction catheter used.
Choosing the right catheter can be difficult.

What are nurses saying? What are nurses saying?
Endotracheal suctioning is very physicalWrong sized suction catheters Need to use “end-feel” to estimate depth of catheter insertionShort time-frame for suctioning ventilated patient

• Cathy is gently and easily pushed off the tube
• Ensures secure attachment and easy disconnection

Mülly-tip catheter with metric markingsMülly-tip catheter with metric markings
• The specially designed Mülly tip catheter helps to prevent mucosa trauma
• The Mülly catheter is designed with 2 small relieving eyes and a full bore distal eye
37
Mucosa trauma Mucosa trauma
Complications like mucosal trauma may occur due to :
• High vacuum
• Design of catheter
• Size of the catheter
• Wrongly performed technique
