Before we get started with the fundamentals of han- dling the car there are a couple basic principals you should understand that may help you understand the car better. These are Aerodynamics, Inertia. We’ll go over these in very brief detail and if you like to learn more there will be references at the end of the guide. Aerodynamics: Down force and drag are arguably two of the most important aspects of a cars aerodynamics when it comes to racing. As cars reach higher speeds their po- tential for generating lift is much higher, they can become unstable and lose control or even leave the roads surface. Adjusting for more down force will help the car stay on the ground and achieve better traction but can also produce more drag. Drag is an aerodynamic force that opposes the cars motion and can hinder the cars ability to accelerate quickly and ef- ficiently. As more drag is produced the car must generate more power to reach it’s top speeds. Race cars are designed to produce minimal drag and street cars can be modified to do the same but as a general rule most street cars are designed with little concern for drag efficiency or down force. In the game you can purchase parts like body kits and tails or “rear wings” that will give your car the option for adjust- able aerodynamics. As far as we can tell the different parts do not have an effect on the efficiency of the aerodynamics of the car. Having both a body kit and a tail doesn’t seem to make much difference either. This means that using a car- bon fiber tail will be no different from using a normal tail and adding a tail to your car that is already fitted with a body kit will not increase down force. In Need For Speed: Most Wanted the only change will be in style. Inertia: An object at rest tends to stay at rest and an ob- ject in motion tends to stay in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbal- anced force.” That’s Isaac Newtons first law and it’s tried and true. As the car moves forward at it’s center of gravity it creates inertia, inertia is the resistance an object in mo- tion has to any change in it’s motion. The more weight a car has and speed the car maintains, the more inertia it devel- ops. When a car tries to change it’s directional velocity it has to fight it’s own inertia. In the diagram the red line represents the cars forward motion and inertia, the blue line represents the turn the car will make. We can see that even though the car turns, it’s inertia main- tains the forward momentum. The car must effectively resist and change it’s inertia to complete the turn with out losing control. Resisting it’s own inertia, especially at a highrateofspeediseasiersaidthandone.Asthecarturns,it’sweightwillshiftinthedirectionofit’sinertiaandpullthecarawayfromit’sturn.Ifthisisn’tcounteredthecarsweightandgravitational forcesor(g-forces)willpullthetiresinadirectionopposingtheirrotationandthecarwillloseit’straction.While lowering the center of gravity can help reduce thedrasticeffectsofinertiaonthecarandwhiledownforcethroughsuperioraerodynamicscanhelpthetiresmaintaintheir traction, the most efficient way to counter the ef-fect,istoredirectthecarsinertiatowardsthedirectionwewouldlikethecartotravel.

Changingacarsinertia is a tricky task, first the car must beabletoresistthemomentumofit’sownweight,athighspeedthisisalmostimpossiblesothecarhastoslowdown.Asthecarslowsdownit’sweightshiftsinaccordancewithit’sinertia,itistransferredtothefrontofthecar.Becauseof this the front tires gain more traction. With this im-proved traction the front tires can be used to graduallyshifttheinertiaofthecarbyturningandmanipulatingthetransferredweightinanewdirection,inthiscase,thedirec-tionofourturn.

Inracingaturnmustbebrokendownandanalyzedinorderfor the driver to understand the most efficient way to enter, traverseandexittheturn.

Here we have three turns and the paths that a car couldtheoretically take around them. The first turn shows the car takingthetightestpatharoundtheturn,whilethispathisthe most efficient in terms of distance travelled it would also requirethecartoslowdownconsiderablyinordertoeffec-tivelyresistinertiaandredirectitselfsuccessfully.

Inthesecondturnthecartakesthewidestpatharoundtheturn,thiswouldallowthecartomaintainahigherspeedwhile turning since it is not resisting it’s inertia as dra-matically as it would in turn one. However this turn alsorequiresthecartotraversemoregroundandtakealongerroutethroughtheturn.Inthethirdturnweseethatthecaristakingthesamehighspeedpatharchasitwouldhaveinturntwobutitismeet-ingtheturnsapexatthesamepointthatitwouldhaveinturnone.Thisistheidealpathtofollowsincethecarmain-tainsahigherrateofspeedaswellastraversinglessdis-tancethroughtheturn.

Inordertobetterunderstandhowthisisproperlyexecuted,lets break the turn down. There are 5 parts to every turntheyare:

1. The Corner Entry

2. The Cut Zone

3. The Middle

4. The Acceleration Zone

5. The Exit

1. At the Corner Entry the driver begins applying thebrakesandslowingthecardown,thisshiftsweighttothefrontof thecar,pushes the frontenddownandgives thefronttiresmoretraction.

2. As the driver enters the Cut Zone they release thebreaksandbeginturningthecartowardstheinnerapexoftheturn.

3.TheMiddleorApexoftheturnisaveryshortdistanceand for only a split second the car should be rolling withneitherbrakesorthrottleapplied.

4.TheAcceleration ZoneisjustpasttheMiddle,atthispointthedriverappliesthethrottleandbeginstoaccelerateoutoftheturnandtowardstheExit.

5.At theExit thedriver completes thearchwhile accelerating out towards the wall

andleavestheturn.

Now we need to keep in mind that Need for Speed: Most Wanted isan“arcadestyleracer”andnotadrivingsimulator,whatthismeansisthatwhiletheprin-ciplesmaybethesametheactualapplicationofthephys-icsdiffer.Generallyarcaderacersarea lotmore forgivingwhenitcomestothingslikeg-forces,theyalsotendtogivethecarsabitmoretraction.Sowhileyoushouldconcen-trate on executing a turn properly, you don’t always haveto be precise and in some cases you can just flat out gun it. You’llalsoneedtobethejudgeofwhichturnstotakeathighspeedswithlittletonobrakesappliedandwhichturnstoslowdownfordramatically.Youcandothisbyanalyzingthetrackandpracticingtheturns.Belowisatrackanalysisforarealworldracetrack.Havealookatitandletsdecipherwhatitsaysandwhy.

The Line: inouranalysiswe’llbefollowingthewhiteline.Thereareacoupledetoursinthismapforlightweightandheavycarsbutwe’llbefocusingonthestandardracingline.Alsotakenoteof theyellowandblackbarsalongtheout-side,theseareareaswherepoordrivingwillleadcarsoffofthetrack.

Turn One: As you can see the most efficient plan of attack istobrakeatthestartoftheturnorcorner entryandbe-gin“wide on the wall”,asthecartraversestheturnatit’sapexthedrivershouldmaneuverthecartowardsthecenteroftheturn,“close on the curve”,arcingwideagainattheexit.

Turn Twohasaslightdeviationjustpasttheapexwherewewouldnormallyseetheacceleration zonebutisn’ttoodrastic.Since it’sbetterexplained in turnseightandninewe’llmoveontoturnthree.

Turn Threeistakenabitdifferently,almosttheoppositeofwhatwe’vediscussedonthepreviouspage,thisisduetothe“S-curve”aheadintoturnfourandthenagainthroughturns five and six. As you can see the car still breaks before goingintotheturn,asindicatedbythereddashedline,butthistimethecargoeswideattheapexoftheturnandanglesitself to move straight through the S and reaches anothersharpturnatthecornerentryofturnfour.

Turn Four:Sincethecarprobablyhasn’treachedtoohighofaspeedbythetimeitnearsthewallatturnfourthedrivershouldbeabletoeaseoffthegasjustenoughtomakethisturnwithoutapplyingthebrakes,thiswouldchangeifthedistancebetweenthetwoturnswasgreaterandthecarhadenoughroomtoreachhigherspeed.

At Turns Eight and Nine we can see a more dramaticexampleofthedrivingpathseeninturntwo.Ratherthanapproach this as one turn the car executes the first half of theturnlikeanindividualturnandthenappliesthebrakesjustwideoftheapex,drawinganewturnlineoutofturnnine. This may seem inefficient but in application it allows forslightlymorespeedandallowsthestraightpathtoturnonetobelengthened,givingthedrivermoretimetoacceler-ateandreachfasterspeedsbeforethenextcornerentry.

NitrousOxideorN2Owasoriginallyusedasanan-estheticbydoctorsanddentists.Howeverwheninducedinthe combustion chamber of a car it produces more efficient useoffuelandgivesthepistonsaboostaswellasafewotheradvantages.Allofthisamountstomorespeedandpower,whichcanhelpusachieveourgoalsofworlddomination!;)ThemostimportantthingtounderstandaboutN2Ousageinthegameiswhenandwheretouseit.

Atthestartofaraceyou’llbegivena3secondcountdown,thisiswheredriverswillbetryingtokeeptheirspeedome-tersneedleintheoptimalpositionfora“Perfect Launch”oncetheword“GO” flashes in your screen it’s time to floor itandhittheN2O.UsingyourN2Oheregivesthecartheextrapowertoquicklyacceleratethroughgearsandreachit’stopspeedfaster.Mostofthetimeit’sbesttouseallofyourN2Orightoffthestarttogetthecartotopspeed,butagainyou’llneedtoanalyzethetracktodeterminethemosteffectiveuseof the N2O. In tracks that start

at an uphill or windy road and are immediately followedbyalongstretchofdownhillorstraightroadyoumaywantto conserve some N2O so you can maximize your speedthroughthestraights.N2Orechargesasyoudrivesoyou’llhavetheopportunitytouseitmorethanonceinarace,conservingyourN2Oforsectionsoftrackwhereyoucangetthemostoutofitisagoodidea.Rememberalsothateverycarhasatopspeedthatitcannotgofasterthan,this isreferredtoas it’sterminal velocity,wherethecarnolongerhasthepowertopushthroughresistingoutsideforces.Onceyourcarhasreachedit’sterminal velocityusingyourN2Oisn’talwaysappro-priate,whileholdingtheN2Obuttondownwillhelpthecarmaintainit’stopspeedit’ssometimesbesttoconservetheN2Oforthenextstraightorwidecurvetogiveyourcara

speedadvantagewhenothersarestillaccel-

eratingslowly.

SteeringandhandlinginNeed for Speed: Most Wanted is a bit tricky at first but a few tips should help get youonyourway.ForPCgamersit’srecommendedthatyouuse an analog controller. There are several manufacturesmakegoodcontrolpadsforthePClike,Logitech,SaitekandMicrosoft.Ideally steering isdonebygently turning thewheel in thedirectionthatyourcarneedstoturn.Turningthewheelfur-therthanneededcanoftentimesleadyourcarintoanun-wantedslideor“drift”.Drift iscausedwhenthecartriestoturntofast.Thecarsownweightandinertiaresisttheturnandcanpullthecarstiresawayfromtheroad,decreasingtraction andcausingthecartoslideinthedirectionofit’sinertia.Since there are no drift style races in Need for Speed: Most Wantedthisisundesirable.Whenacardrifts itislosing valuable traction that could be put to better use bymovingthecarforwardandclosertothegoal.

Ifyoufeelorhearyourcarstartingtodrift,correctforthisbygentlyeasingoffthegasandturninginthedirectionyourcarissliding,thenusinganothergentlemovementturnyourcar back into the direction you were originally travelling.YoucanalsouseyourN2O tosavethecarfromadrift ifthedriftisn’ttoobad,dothisbyhittingtheN2Oandthenimmediatelyturninginthedirectionyouwantthecartogo.However if the car has already drifted and turned to farawayfromthedirectionitneedstobemoving ,N2Omayonlyhelptoslamyourcarintoawall.Watchoutfordriftingindirtorgrass,mostcarswillslideuncontrollablyandsometimesinthesesituationsevenN2Oandgooddrivingcanthelpyou.Almost total lossoftrac-tionathighspeedswillleaveyouatthemercyofthecarandit’sinertia.

Note:Ifyourcontrollerseemstopullyourcarinonedirectionevenwhentheanalogstickiscentered,trymovingthesteeringsliderafewclickstotheleft.Thismayhelpcorrecttheissueofanover-sensitivecontroller.

Police driving tactics:The TVIorPITmaneuverhasbeenusedfordecadesbythepolice.Generallyapolicecaror“cruiser”willtrytousetheirfrontendtopushyourrearendtooneside,forcingthecartoturnsharply.Sincewe’vealreadycoveredinertiayoucanseehowpushingthecarintoasharpturnathighspeedswillcauseittolosecontrolandspinout.Assoonasthishappensthey’lltrytopinyou.Evasive Tactics: Outrunning the PC’susuallyisn’ttotoughifyou’vegotafastcar,butonce they’vespunyoutry toslow down, turn into the directionof your slide, turn a full 180 anddriveaway.

The Box: As more police carscloseinonyouoneofthemmaytry to get in front of you, whenthis happens they are usuallytrying to slow you down andsurround you or “box you in”oncethishappenstheywillallslowtoastopandeffectivelytrapyourcar.Evasive Tactics: Avoiding a box is rela-tivelyeasy,simplynotdrivingbehindtheleadcruis-ercanhelp toavoid thebox.Weavingbackandforthwillcausetheleadcruisertoloseyouandallowyoutopass.Ifyou can’t pass the cruiser continue weaving until you canfind another way to evade, such as a sharp turn or pursuit breaker.YoucanalsoperformaTVImaneuveronthelead-ingcruiserbynudgingthecruisersrearendwithyourfrontfender,onceyou’vegot the rearendof thecruiserangledenough to where it starts drifting, accelerate or use yourN2Otomaximizetheeffectandspinthecruiseraround.

The Rolling Block:TherollingblockisasituationwherethreeormorePC’swillget infrontofyouandsimultane-ouslyslowtoastop.OncestoppedmorePC’swillcloseinbehindyouandendyourreignofvehicularterror.Evasive Tactics:Thebestwaytoavoidarollingblockistonotbearoundit,ifyouseePC’stryingtopassyouitmaybetimetotakeasharpturnontoadifferentstreetortrytoper-formaPITmaneuveronthePC’sinfrontofyoutogetthemoutofyourway.IfthePC’smanagetostopyouimmediatelytryaJ-Turnandseeifyoucantescapegoingtheotherway.

The Road Block: Inaroadblock,multiplecruisersorRhinoSUV’swilllineupandtry to block off the road. Slammingintoaroadblockatthewronganglecanbringyoutoacompletestoporeven cause your car to flip. Listen totheradiosincepolicewillnotifyother cruisers of a road block setupahead.Evasive Tactics: Look for theweakspot in the roadblock,using

thespeedbreakerwillslowdowntimeandgiveyouachancetoanalyzetheblock.Onceyouhavespottedtheweakspotoruncoveredarea,useyourN2Otoplowthrough.Ifyouhavenochoicebuttoramacruiser,aimfortherear,sometimesthiscanhelpspinthecruiserorSUVoutofyourway.

Road Spikes:Roadspikescanendyourrunimmediately.Ifyourcarhitsthespikesyourtireswillblowandyour

carbecomesun-drivable,copswillhaveyoublocked inwithina fewseconds. Police will not only an-

nouncearoadspikeovertheradiobutthey will also indicate whether or not thespikesareontheright,leftorcenter,keepyourearsopen.Evasive Tactics:Evasive tactics for roadspikes are the same as road blocks. Useyourspeedbreakertoquicklyseewherethespikesareandnavigatearoundthem.

Rhino SUV’s:Rhino’swillcomeatyoufromthefrontandattempttoslamintoyourcar.If

they’resuccessfulyou’llbebroughttoacompletestopwhichincreasesyourchancesofbeingbusted.

Evasive Tactics:TryleadingtheRhino’stoonesideoftheroadandastheygetclosequicklydrivetotheotherside,al-ternativelyyoucanquicklyshiftintoreverseandturn180.

General Tactics:

Practiceyour“J-Turn”,dothisbyshiftingintoreverseandturningthewheeljustenoughtoperforma180.Onceyourcarhasturnedaround,hitthegasandgetoutofthere.

Look for Pursuit Breakers, when you find one make sure thatmostofyourpursuersareclosebehindyou,thisinsuresthatyoutakeoutasmanycruisersaspossible.

In“CoolDown”lookforhidingspots,indicatedbytheblueringsonyourmap.Thesewillspeeduptheprogressofthe“CoolDown”meter.

Whilepracticingoff-linewillhelpyouanalyzeandbetter know the tracks, your car may perform completelydifferentlyonline.Becauseofthis,speedsthatyoumaintainoff-lineareusuallyprettydifferenton-line.ThisguidewillfocusonRankedon-lineracingandtheissuesinvolved.

Performance Matching:PerformancematchingSoundslikeanoptionthatmightmakeallcars,regardlessoftheirpartsandtuning,performexactlythesame.Thisisactuallyprettyfarfromthetruth.It’skindoftoughtotellexactlywhatperformancematchingdoesbutonethingwecanbeprettysureofisthatitwillslightlyde-tunefastercarsandslightlyupgradeslowercars.ThisdoesnotmeanthattheCamaroSScanmatchtheperformanceofaCarreraGTon-linebutitdoesmeanthatcarsinthesameperformancerangeorofthesametypewillbecloselytunedtoeachother.Asfarastestingshowsthereareonlyafewcars(whendriv-encorrectly)thatcanracewithsimilarresults.Thosecarsare;The Porche Carrera GTThe BMW M3 GTRThe Lotus EliseThe Lamborghini MurcielagoAlthoughit’simportanttonotethattheLamborghini’shan-dlingisseverelydecreasedduringonlineplayandwilltakesomegettingusedto.WhiletheLotuscannotmatchthetopspeedoftheCarreraithasexcellenthandlingandcangener-allyperformbetterontrackswithlotsoftightturns.Mostoftheothercarscantreallycompetewithagooddriverbehindthecontrolsofoneofthesecarsandwillusuallygetleftprettyfarbehindwhencompetingagainstone.Themostpopular choice for top rankeddriverson-line istheBMWM3GTR.

Rubbing & Ramming:A lotofdriverswill tellyouthatrubbingisapartofracing.Thisisactuallyverytrueforthemostpart.Whentwocarstrytofollowthesamelinearoundatrackthey’llgenerallybumporrubeachotherinthepro-cess. Depending on thelevel of professionalismoraggression,onecarwillbe given the opportunitytotaketheleadwhiletheother will have to lookforanotheropportunitytopass.Ifbothdriversareag-gressive,toomuchrubbingcanleadtobothvehiclesslowingdownquite a bit or even losing control.For this reason if your car is not intheleadwhilerubbingupagainstan-other,it’sgenerallyinyourbestinter-esttoslowjustenoughtogetbehindtheothercaruntilanotherpassingopportu-nityarisesorhittheN2Oandattempttopassthemimmediately.Rammingisadifferentballgameentirely

andisusuallyconsideredpoorsportsmanship.Whenacarramsanothercaritisintentionallyhittingtheothercarwiththesolepurposeofforcingtheothercaroutofcontrol.Sincethiswillalmostalwaysslowbothcarsdownandcanoftentimescausebothcarstolosecontrolit’snotarecommendedtacticandisbestavoided.Adriverthatcanavoidrammingandkeepacoolheadwhilemaintainingsmooth lineswillalwaysbeatadriverwhoswervesaroundontheroadtryingtohitothercars.

Cheating: Unfortunately with almost all on-line gamestherearecheatersandwithNeedForSpeed:MostWantedthisisnoexception.Cheatersareusuallyprettyeasytospotbuttheyarealmostimpossibletodealwithbecauseofthelackofhostcontrolandoptions.Somecheatsthathavebeennoticedarethefollowing;Infinite N2O: These guys are pretty easy to spot, the infi-niteN2OcheatgivesthemtheabilitytoholddowntheN2Othrough the entire race if they feel like it. Once inside the messaging system find the users nameanddoubleclickit,thiswillpullupalistofoptionsre-latedtotheplayer.Fromthislistyoucanselect“Feedback”and then select “Cheating”. This will apparently send a flag toEAthatsomeone ischeatingonlineandwillencouragethemtoresearchanddealwiththeissue.

Connecting: Connecting to a host can be frustrating foreveryone.The interfacehasmultiple icons for thestateofeveryone’sconnection.Theiconsareasfollows;

Connecting:thisiconindicatesthattheuserisstilltryingtoconnecttothehostandthatasolidconnec-tionhasnotorcannotbeestablished.

Great:ThisIconindicatesagreatconnectionwith the host, the race should go smoothly and with outmuchlagifanyatall.

OK:ThisiconindicatesagoodorOKconnectiontothehost.Theremaybesomelag,buttheraceisstillplay-able.

Poor:Thisiconindicatesapoororbelowaveragecon-nectiontothehost.Racingwithapoorconnectioncanre-sult in lag and difficult or hindered play.

Unsure:Indicatesthattheconnectiontothehostcannotbedetermined.Resultscouldvarydramaticallyortheusermaynotbeabletoconnectatall.

Sportsmanship: It’s a big word! Nothing ruins a goodrace like a poor loser or a bad winner. If you find yourself in lastplacealot,don’timmediatelyassumethatsomeoneischeating.Therealitycouldbethatthepersonyouareracinghasdonealotofpracticingandreallyknowsthetracks.Insituations like this it can be very beneficial to ask the winner fortipsoreventotryandcloselyfollowtheirracingpattern.Takenoteofwhereandwhentheyapply theirbrakesandN2O.Findoutiftheyareusingshortcutsthatyoumightnotyetbeawareof.Goodsportsmanshipandrelationshipswithother racers can help you find new friends to race against, effectivelyreducingyourchancesofracingagainstcheatersandevenhelpyoulearntoracebetterthroughteamworkandcommunication.Ifyouwindupwinningalotoftheracestakenoteofwhatsomeoftheotherracersaredoingwrongandofferuptips,pointoutshortcutsthattheymayhavemissedorletthemknowthattheymaybetakingacertainturntoofastortooclosely.Thebettertheracersyouraceagainstthemoreex-hilaratingtheraceswillbeandthemorefunyou’llhave.Itbenefits everyone to help each other get better and push eachothertoraceharder.If you find racers that you enjoy racing against, be sure to addthemtoyourfriendslistinyourmessagingsystem.Thiswaywhenyou’reonlinetogetheroneofyoucanstartarace

Rememberthatbrakingbefore a turn can helpyou navigate the turnquicker. Taking turnstoquicklywillresultindrifting or even com-plete loss of control.Every time you toucha wall or drift your los-ingvaluablesecondsfromyour finish time.

Ifyou’retryingtorackuptimeorbountyinapursuittryevad-ing the cruisers for just enoughtime to get the “Cool Down” meter,then turn around and find the cops again, this resets the reinforcement timer andwill help keep the number of cruisers onyourtailtoaminimum.
