The University of New Mexico campus, in Albu- querque, was designed to be people-friendly. The striking variety of architecture, highlighted by dra- matic landscaping, creates an ambiance that is rare in public settings. But the facility has more than just a physical presence. “It has, querencia, a place in our hearts, like a homeland. UNM does not impose itself on the cultural, physical and historic landscape of the southwest. It arises from it,” according to the introductory page. Academic excellence has been an UNM hallmark since its 1889 founding. The institution is famous for its contribution to the arts and sciences. The music department has created a dedicated classical music audience and provides 24-hours radio broadcasts. The university has developed cutting edge science and engineering departments. The medical school is a leader in can- cer and diabetes research. The law school is nationally recognized for its Indian Law, natural resources and environmental law contributions. The first 18 pages contain photos of particular buildings, descriptions of programs and awards plus UNM history. The re- maining pages are filled with pictures representing the changing seasons, student scholastic endeavors and scenes of ath- letic competitions. This book offers an interesting synopsis of the institution’s founding, the campus and its curriculum. The exquisite pho- tography captures the facility’s physical allure. In closing Price said, “This photographic portrait of the UNM shares the lure and magic of the campus and its unique ar- chitecture. …UNM has evolved into a major American university, overcoming geographical isolation and the relative poverty and rural circumstances of much of the state’s small population.” V.B. Price is the recipient of numerous awards including Arts Alliance Bravo Award for Excellence in Literary Arts and other honors. Robert Reck is an internationally recognized architectural and interior design photographer. His works have been featured in “Architectural Digest.” Both Reck and Price are UNM graduates. Van Dorn Hooker produced the publication and was the university architect for many years.
