• Data Visualization as part of analytics communication is paramount to value realization from analytics
• Humans understand and process visual information differently from numeric and text data
• Dashboards have been the go-to visualization for analytics in the past • Used to present lots of information, however often end up unfocused and cluttered/distracting • Users must link different dashboard items (charts/data/feeds) together mentally • Visual information may look related but is not (for instance when viewing a compound graph) • Users are expected to figure out themselves how to take value and actions from the dashboard • Often there are little to no real-time analytics presented on dashboards

• Consider the Audience • What actions would/should/might they take from the information presented • How can we make the intepretation clear, concise and presentable
• Consider the Data • Is device data really the only relevant data? • How should data be presented so that only the relevant information is shown?
• Consider the Analytics • Support the Audience with the correct data to address the use case • Support Insights from the data that can be acted upon
How do we tackle this problem?

ATM not
working Sorry for the
inconvenience. We are aware of the issue and are working to resolve it. In the meanwhile, the nearest working
ATM is just one block from your current
location.
Day 4
> ATM 1 DOWN for 3 mins
ATM 5 UP (nearest)
What’s the state of my
empire?
We have current data on an outage of a few
ATMs in SF. Customers are being redirected to nearby ATMs. We know the issue is localized and
therefore impact to business is minimal.
