Graduation“Don’t tell us the sky is the limit when thare are footprints on the moon.”

Congratulations, Graduates!!! On May 24, 2009, BrashearHigh School recongnized its newest class of graduates: theclass of 2009. These twenty-one students worked hard duringtheir academic careers at BHS and now they are ready to goon their own paths. Whether their futures take them to col-lege, vocational training, the military, or the workforce, theyknow their futures will be dependent on gow hard theyworked and prepared themselves at BHS. The class of 2009was academically gifted by evidence of their nine honorsociety selections; seven BHS chapter Honor Society mem-bers and tow National Technical Honor Society members.This class earned almost $70,000 in scolarships from variousinstitutions and organizations. They will use this money totravel the world, study far away, or prepare for the workforceclose to home. No matter where the road takes the Class of2009, they need to know that their friends, family, faculty,administration and staff will miss them and wish them thebest of luck.

They won three out of the last six games and finished with the consolationchampionship at the alanta tournament. Additionally, the team opened the season taking thirdplace at the Green City tournament. Junior High TrackCongratulations to both boys’ and girls’ junior high track teams. The girls’squad placed well at all of the meets, while the boys’ side saw great indi-vidual performances. At the TCC meet, the girls’ team saw many top threefinishes; Shelby Salter, 2nd Long Jump; Alexa Acton, 3rd Triple Jump;Cynthia Anderson, 2nd 75M Low Hurdles; 2nd 800M Relay; 3rd 400MRelay; Nicole Moncrief, 2nd 800M; 1st 1600M Relay. For the boys, HaydenHousman tallied most of the team’s points. Hayden Housman, 1st triplejump; Hayden Housman, 3rd 1600M; Hayden Housman, 2nd 200M. Addi-tionally, the Tigers scored in three events; Jeremy Barnes, 7th Discus; GusMihalevich, 5th 200M; 4th 400M Relay. These performances will bodewell for varsity track in the years to come.

Both the Junior High and the HighSchool Academic Bowl teams hadoutstanding seasons this pastspring. The Junior High teamraced out to a 6-1 record on theseason and recorded a strong 3rdplace showing in the TCC.Several members of the squadgained valuable experience on theAcademic Bowl circuit which willserve them well as they tranistionto the High School team. NickThomas and Andy Belzer hadquality seasons overall and theywere awarded with All-TCChonors.

On the High School AcademicBowl team side, the squad easilyswept through the regular seasonwith and undefeated record and a1st place TCC championship. The 2008 Lady Tiger Softball team was exciting and fun to watch.They finished with a 14-5 record which included 2nd place fin-ishes at the Atlanta and Schuyler County Tournaments and a hard-fought extra-inning loss to Canton in the District semifinal. KatieWatson earned Honorable Mention TCC honors, whille MacyRogers earned 2nd Team All-TCC for her pitching performances.Cierra Hines and Abby McKim garnered both All-TCC 1st Teamhonors, as well as All-District accolades. In addition Abby McKimearned 2nd Team All-Region for her strong performance behindthe plate for the Tigers.

Varsity Girls’ Basketball

Above: The 2008-2009 Varsity Girls’ basketball team worked to establish a new identity under first-yearcoach Heath Schneider. With Caroline Slavin providing the only senior leadership, the squad had to rely on ayouthful nucleus of players. Sophomore Abby McKim and freshman Macy Rogers earned 2nd Team All-TCC for their efforts and the rest of the team saw valuable minutes that will help them in the future. Theteam started off the season strong by taking 3rd place at the Novinger Tournament. The girls pressed onthrough the rest of the season by placing 7th at the North Shelby Tournament and 4th at the Brashear Tourna-ment before finishing their season with an 8-18 record. 2008-2009 Tigers

Above: The 2008-2009 Varsity Boys’ basketball team was one of themost successful in school history. The team finished with a 24-5 recordwhile recording tournament championshhips at Novinger and Brashear.TCC Coach of the Year Don Wilburn led the squad with plenty of helpfrom TCC MVP Kiley Watson. Trae Treasure and Matt Thomas alsogarnered 1st-team All-TCC honors while Anthony Ambrosia and RyanFerdig earned 2nd team honors. In addition, Justin Hazen earnedHonorable Mention. Despite dropping the district final to La Plata, theteam placed Kiley, Trae, and Matt on the All-District team. The 2009 Varsity Track athletes made a strong showing intheir performances in the rain-shortened season. At theTCC track meet, the girls were paced by Chloe Sykes’efforts in the 1600M (3rd) and 3200M (2nd), as well asthe 3rd place finish of the 3200M Relay. On the boys’side, they were helped by Jay Scudder Discus (3rd),3200M Relay (3rd), Joseph Woods 1600M (3rd), andJustin Hazen 3200M (2nd). The track athletes performedwell at districts and had several athletes compete atsectionals. Chandi March, Chloe Sykes, Katie Watson,and Stephanie Elsea represented the Tigers by running inthe 4X800M Relay. The boys also sent a 4X800M relayteam consisting of Andy Belzer, Justin Hazen, JayScudder, and Joseph Woods. Individually, Joseph Woods1600M (6th) and Justin Hazen 3200M (5th) battled thecompetition for a trip to state, but fell just short. All of thesecional participants, except for Justin Hazen, return nextyear and should challenge for multiple trips to the statetrack meet in the future.

BHS ChoirThe BHS music department experienced another fine year under the direction of Mr. JeremyHaupt. During the fall marching and parade season, the Marching Tigers earned a first placedesignation in their class at the Mizzou Homecoming parade. Additionally, several BHSstudents traveled with the TCC band and choir ensembles that performed at local conferenceschools. The extra practice and early morning sessions really paid off.

According to sponsor Martha Reese, FBLA is a career and technicalorganization for all high school students participating in businessprograms. During the school year, over 2,750 members and advisersrepresenting 426 chapters through out the state met to elect state officers,transact business of the state chapter, participate in leadership and career work-shops, and compete in the state leadership awards program.
