UNLEY HIGH SCHOOLEnglish NewsUN Youth VoiceUN Voice is a unique public speaking competition, organised by UN Youth Australia, which gives students the opportunity to really consider issues affecting the community, the nation and the world. On 17 October, Unley High School sent seven students from years 9 and 10 to compete; Deanna Athanasos, Marisa Djukanovic, Steph Madigan, Abby McCormick, Sofia Sampson, Sonica Semwal and Henry Thiele-Swift.

The task was to prepare a 5 minute speech pitching a solution for a current issue. Our students tackled problems related to educating girls across the globe, decreasing the impact of illicit drugs and improving opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth. We witnessed some really eye-opening research on these issues and incredibly innovative solutions for tackling the problems, along with great charisma when delivering proposals. A “hybrid economy” to be more inclusive of indigenous Australian culture, a virtual reality classroom, reconsideration of Australian laws and hopes for global charity were just some of the fantastic solutions put forward by our students.

Marisa, Steph and Sonica all made it through to the state finals, which took place on 26 October. With just one week to prepare their next speeches, these girls did not disappoint. Once again, our students developed creative solutions for improving the effectiveness of charities, responding to climate change and re-imagining the way Australian History is taught. It was a great excuse to practice divergent thinking and develop public speaking skills, where Steph Madigan was placed in the top three and has been given the opportunity to compete in the national finals in Brisbane next year. It was a fantastic effort by everyone. Congratulations to all who competed.

Spring Poetry Launch 2017

This year Unley High School students were successful in having their poems accepted for publication in this year’s Spring Poetry Festival Booklet. On Saturday October 28 their success was celebrated at the official launch. Karnik Wadhawan in Year 8, Kaci Gardiner in Year 9 and Annalise Size, Sabrina Turtur, Natasha Evans and James Palmer in Year 10, were presented with their copy of the booklet making them all officially published poets. Unley was one of only three schools that had so many poems selected for publication, joining Wilderness and St Dominic’s. In addition Aimee Allmand was also given an award for designing the cover of the booklet last year. I was very proud to see the efforts of our Unley students. Their success and the inspiring speeches from the judges will motivate more poetry from our talented students. Sue Wendt English Coordinator

The Year 11 Drama class performed “Cosi”, by Louis Nowra for their final performance this year. This classic Australian play was performed with energy and humour. The audience enjoyed the hilarious dialogue and the wonderful characters. Highlights of the performance included Zac’s ( Tayla Robinson) piano accordion playing, Cherry’s (Caitlin Rule) total devotion to Lewis (Kathryn McCloy), Roy’s ( Ishana Somers and Ren Hallett- Patterson) enthusiasm, and Doug’s (Jonathan Antonis) burning cat story. Congratulations to all of the performers for a great night’s entertainment.

The Link Program is sadly farewelling three remarkable, young men; Liam Goldfinch, Callum McBrearty and Charlie Rowland, they have completed their schooling at Unley High School with the support of the Link Program. These young men have demonstrated remarkable resilience and determination in their school and personal lives, overcoming not just the usual academic challenges but also the significant health and physical challenges which face them everyday. These students have been excellent mentors to the younger students both academically and socially, providing friendship, guidance and assistance with technology and all aspects of school life. Although we are all sorry to see them leave school we know the next stage of their journey will be fruitful and rewarding and we say goodbye knowing we have prepared each of them for what lies ahead. Goodbye and all the best.

UNLEY HIGH SCHOOLMusic NewsPiano Students Shine

Our twice-yearly piano concert was held in the Performing Arts Centre on Wednesday 29 November, hosted by our piano teacher Kat Mustanow and with twenty-one pianist performers. Students Parvaneh Pakizeh (2nd grade, Honours), Afsaneh Pakizeh (2nd grade, Honour), Caroline Soe (2nd grade, High Distinction), and Andre Broniecki (5th Grade, Honours) all received their certificates for AMEB exams at the event. The quality of performances was exceptional throughout the evening, with a wide variety of repertoire on show. Lessons in our private piano, electric guitar, and bass lesson programmes are available in 2018, please contact music staff Chris Martin or Carol Hollis for further details.

Twilight Concert Rocks the Performing Arts Centre

Year 8 and 9 students and special guests presented a night of music at our annual ‘Twilight Concert’ on 23 November. The threat of storms drove us into the Performing Arts Centre, and well over 100 parents and students piled into the drama rooms to hear a wide variety of acts. It was wonderful to hear the progress these students have made throughout the semester, with tight performances from all groups. Special guests Ashton Anderson (year 10) and Jackson Phillips (year 11) also presented their original music. We look forward to seeing you at our next major concert, the ‘Autumn Concert’, planned for Term 2 2018 in the George Cresswell Hall.

Year 10’s Present Annual Cabaret

On Friday 1 December our Year 10 Music class presented the annual ‘Cabaret’ concert in the George Cresswell Hall. Under the theme of “Welcome to the 80s”, and colours of pink, black and white, students combined elements of a quiz night and a music concert to entertain a large group of parents, teachers and students for the evening. The quiz was hotly contested, with only one point separating first and second place. The Year 10’s worked in four teams to organize the concert, focusing on Production, Venue, Technical, and Publicity. Two generous sponsors from Mitcham shopping centre supported the event, Ambra Café (owned by parents of one of our Year 10’s) and Banana Boys – why not thank these sponsors with your support over the Christmas break!

Intensive Secondary English Student Surf ExcursionOn 1 December the ISEC (Intensive Secondary English Course) class visited Southport beach at Port Noarlunga to learn about beach and surf safety. Despite the grim forecast with thunderstorms and lightning, the weather was perfect with no rain at all. The students had a great time learning to boogie board for the very first time.

Maria Kvopka ISEC teacher

On Friday 1 December we went to Port Noarlunga. My classmates and I came here to surf. Although that day the weather was not perfect, I still enjoyed that day. I admired the alignment of the sky with the water. I observed the footprints of people and dogs on the beach. I felt calm looking at the sea, the sky, the world. Jiayi SONG

We went to surf last week. Everything was interesting just the weather was a little bit cold but the waves on the edge of the beach were large and suitable for surfing. Luckily we had wetsuits to wear. This was my first time to surf and use a surfboard. Even though I was hit by the surfboard in the surf and it was painful, it was still a happy experience. Qingyang XIONG

On Friday 1 December we went to Port Noarlunga. That day was a wonderful day. All of us wore wet suits. That made us warm when we touched the cold water. Everyone had a boogie board. We also had two teachers to teach us how to surf and stay safe in the water. They were very kind and helpful. We had much fun. That was my first time to surf in the beach. I was very excited. At noon, we went to a fast food restaurant. I enjoyed the food. Siqi JIANG

2017 marked the 50th anniversary of the 1967 Referendum and 25th anniversary of the Mabo decision. Unley High School entered into a Reconciliation Action Plan this year. Part of this was to create a mural. Carly Dodd, Unley old scholar and indigenous artist, designed the mural and MrD’s year 10 art class painted it under Carly’s guidance. She attended each double lesson over three weeks. Niina Marni means, “are you good” or “welcome”. The Kaurna shield is on the right next to kangaroo and emu tracks native to the Adelaide plains. Special thanks to Dona Betterman’s (ASETO) husband Gary who volunteered to hang the mural. It is located on the wall as you leave reception to the staff carpark and is very hard to miss. It is also, what is now seen when you enter student services. Jim De Gregorio, Aboriginal Education Teacher

Year 8 Italian success in Italian language competition in SA

I am very proud and pleased to announce that this term our Italian Year 8 class (204) participated in a competition run by The Dante Alighieri Association and SAATI where they placed second. This was during “La Settimana della Cucina Italiana”, a week celebrating and raising awareness of Italian cuisine and culture around the world.

As such, students investigated and explored the concept of Italian food, including the impact of Italian food world-wide. Their findings were then presented in two forms: video and written menus. For the video, the students wrote their own script, recorded and edited it using The Green App to edit with music and images. Two menus were presented, one depicting authentic Italian dishes - “Made in Italy” - and a second “Sounds Italian” menu with dishes that are thought to be Italian but are not. As the selected class representative, Judd Woolman, along with his parents and class teacher, was awarded on November 22 by the Italian Consul for SA, Roberta Ronzitti, during the festivities for the “Week of the Italian Cuisine” at the Marche Community Club. The prize consisted of a certificate and a $150 voucher to be spent in a selected Italian food shop. This voucher provided the opportunity to celebrate the end of the year tasting and experiencing the authentic Italian food (and culture) explored during the last term.

Home Group 9408 has been fundraising for a wheelchair-friendly outdoor table. This table would allow our wheelchair-bound Link students to have a place to sit outside with their peers. We felt this was appropriate because some areas for student congregation are difficult to access in a wheelchair. First, our class surveyed the Link students for their preferred table model and sought permission from the facilities committee. We chose a conveniently located site for the table directly outside the Link room door. Our home group teacher organised a lamington sale for Multicultural Food Day to raise money and students took turns running the stall. Once the pavers are delivered, the table will be transported to the site and we will work together to build the

foundation. We hope that this project will contribute to the inclusivity of wheelchair-bound students at recess and lunch. Sally Clarke, Home Group 9408 Teacher

Home Group 9407 chose to raise money for Novita as their community care project this year. Novita assists our Link students at Unley High School. The main fundraiser was held in July where money was raised by shaving off Mr

Polmear’s beard. This proved to be very successful. Our second fundraiser was held in September and involved a Students vs Teachers basketball game held during one lunchtime at school. Over these two events, our class managed to raise over $1600 for Novita.Claire Wilson, Home Group 9407 Teacher

AUSTRALIAN VOLLEYBALL SCHOOLS CUP 2017

On Sunday 3 December, 18 students in 2 teams, travelled to Melbourne to play in the week long Australian Volleyball Schools Cup. Our teams competed in the Year 12 Division 2 Boys, and Year 11 Division 3 Boys competitions. They were expertly coached by old scholars, Cameron Hedger and Arno Norrito, and supervised by Ms Stock, Mr. Bettess and Mr Syme.

The Year 11 team, consisted of captain Damon Evans, Jordan Lai, Lakshay Rattan, Max Haby, Billy Fragos, Ryan Singleton (Year 10), Georgia Sandford, Maggie Gardner, Tayla Robinson and Zoe Andrews.

They formed a mixed team enabling them all to play, and perform very well (against all male opposition) throughout the week. In a division containing 13 schools, they won 4 games and lost 5, and finished in 10th place overall.

The Year 12 boys, won a Silver Medal in Division 3 last year, and decided to move up to Division 2 this year. This proved to be a great decision. Eleven teams competed in the division, they won 6 games only losing once to Westminster. This was quickly avenged with a tightly fought 2 set to 1 win against Westminster in the Gold Medal playoff; 11-25; 25-22; 15-12: a brilliant performance. This was a fitting result for a group of hardworking, dedicated students who have played and trained together for 5 years, and finally reached their ultimate goal. Congratulations go to - Oscar Armstrong, Cameron Hedger(coach), Rhys Clarke, Daniel McAinsh, Jamie Clarke(Year 11), Ms.Stock (team manager), Tai Duong(captain), Jerome Tay (Year 11), Zac Strathearn and Josh Chesser.

In week 8, a group of senior boys participated in the Australian Schools Basketball Championships in Melbourne, the 15th year of participation for Unley High School. Our team was led by basketball trip stalwarts Henry Goodfellow and Jordie Wittervan and coached by Sports Coordinator, Tim Shortt. The boys went through the minor round games of the Senior Division 3 competition with only one loss. Josh Thomas and Josh Cranna set the pace on the scoreboard which set up a semi-final with sports specialist school Erindale College from Canberra. The team stayed focused de-spite a tournament ending injury to Henry, getting contributions across the board. In particular, Tom Lanthois and Zak Kromer stepped up their play to lead the team to the gold medal match against Willeton High School (a basket-

ball specialist school from Perth). A tense game went back and forth, with neither team able to hold a lead of more than 6 points. Newcomer Jack Scott saved his best games for the final rounds, leading the team in scoring in both games. The 4th quarter saw several lead chang-es and eventually Mitch Houston scored a barrage of 3 pointers to put Unley home (53-50) in the dying mo-ments. This victory in the gold medal game certainly was a fantastic way to end a memorable week. Thanks to teachers, Martin Ellis and Sara Chapple for their tireless efforts throughout the tournament, allowing the focus to remain on the basketball. For the players this was an incredible week with friendships and memories made for life.
