My Trip to India

Last school holidays, my family and I went to India to attend a

wedding ceremony. We flew to India by Air Asia flight. Travelling

by an airplane was an unforgettable experience for me. We

arrived in Thiruchi International Airport in the evening after 3 hours

journey. My cousins welcomed us with wide smiles. We drove

another 3 hours to reach my relatives’ house in Dharmapuri. That

journey in the car was extremely tiring.

Unlike weddings in Malaysia, the wedding function in

Dharmapuri was celebrated for days. We were on the bride’s side

and it was so much fun. Although we were not doing much, it was

a new experience for us. My mother presented some gifts for the

newlyweds. After the function, we visited my mother’s village. It

was a rural area in Darmapuri. We did a lot of shopping there. We

even celebrated my birthday there too.

I was very happy to celebrate my birthday and spend my

holidays with my cousins in India. My mother said that we could go

to India again during the next holidays. I’m looking forward for my

next holidays.

P5 ‘s Ancient Civilization Poster Making

Primary 5 students have been learning about Ancient

Civilizations in their English class this week. The main objective

of the unit was to read about people who lived a thousand years

ago. After reading about the Greek, Chinese, Egyptian and

Mayan civilizations, they began a Poster making activity.

During the activity, they learned how to draw conclusions

based on the information they have read and created a poster

about it. Each student gathered pictures and decorated their

posters independently. It was a chance to develop reading and

writing skills in a fun and creative way.

Basic geometry: measuring angle on your names

The Secondary 1 students have started a new chapter on basic

geometry. In this chapter, students learn to identify various types

of angles and solve problems related to angles. As a warm up

activity on this chapter, they have done an activity of measuring

angles on their names. The purpose of this activity is to ensure

that students are able to identify various types of angles and to

measure the angles on their names by using a protractor. To

make their activity interesting, the Korean students wrote their

names in Korean alphabets as well. At the end of the lesson, the

students were able to reflect upon what they have learned.

Hopefully they will use such knowledge in understanding future

geometry topics.

Enzyme Fermentation

On 17 July, some representatives from Kerry Industries visited

our school to review the progress of enzyme fermentation we

have begun together a few months ago. They were satisfied with

the enzyme maturity status. According to their observation, the

fermentation of the enzymes does not show any abnormalities in

growth and is developing appropriately . Because of this, we

could finally use them as eco-fertilizers for our school garden.

The Kerry team representatives also briefed us on the method

of dilution before watering the plants. They went for a garden tour

led by Mrs. Parahsakthi and were very happy with the efforts of

Eco Club. Before leaving, we surprised them with our very own

“Roselle’s” and “Ladies' Fingers” which is also known as “okra”.

We look forward to our upcoming project together which is the

Rainwater Harvesting Project.

Students’ Activities Nursery Project – Eco Club

An ordinary school yard can actually be transformed into a fun

learning environment. This semester, we have made a school

garden as a wonderful way to reconnect students with the

natural world. By planting some seeds and watering them

everyday, students learn the value of gardening as well as

discover the true source of food. Agricultural concepts and skills

are integrated into several subjects such as math, science, art,

physical education and social studies. Likewise, several

educational goals such as promoting personal and social

responsibility are achieved. As we care for our school garden, we

are also able to improve the school environment.

Why is it great to have a garden in school?

Experience and research have shown numerous benefits of

school gardens and natural landscaping:

1. Students learn focus and patience, cooperation, teamwork

and social skills.

2. They gain self-confidence and a sense of "capability" along

with new skills and knowledge in food growing.

3. Students become more fit and healthy as they spend more

time active in the outdoors and start choosing healthy foods

over junk food.

4. The schoolyard is diversified and beautified.

5. Vandalism decreased because students gain ownership of

their environment.

After School Activities

Throughout Term 3, the After School Activity (ASA) has been

ongoing normally in UIS. ASA has been organized in order for

the students to have more outdoor activities other than activities

inside the conventional classroom environment. The ongoing

ASA includes swimming, basketball, Eco-club and Archery.

ARCHERY

Under the coaching of Mr Hisham, students in the Archery club

learned proper archery techniques. Likewise, the students also

learn to focus and tune out distractions. They learn not only to hit

the bullseye why they play archery but they also apply such skill

in their everyday learning and studying practices. Besides being

a fun exercise, archery also helps to develop the students core

strength and coordination.

After School Activities

BASKETBALL

Basketball club was established in April with the help of Mr Gan

Pou Yang as the coach. Students learn basic basketball skills

and techniques as well as strength and conditioning. Students go

through drills and physical training every Tuesdays and

Thursdays under the supervision of teachers. With enough

training, the students are hoping to face other schools in

competitions soon.

ECO-CLUB

As UIS is now registered as an Eco-School, the Eco-Club mainly

consists of activities which are Eco friendly. Teachers and

parents contributed to some of the wide-ranged Ecological

activities. Eco-Club has its activities everyday. Daily activities of

the students in this club are watering the plants, weeding the

garden and doing arts and crafts with recycled items. As UIS

aims to achieve the Green Flag award, the Eco-Club members’

contributions will definitely be a great help to reach our goal. We

dream and work altogether to be the first school in Johor Bahru

of earning the prestigious award.

After School Activities

SWIMMING

After a long day in class, swimming is the time for the students

to get into the water to learn and play at the same time.

Swimming is known to relieve stress. When they enter the

swimming pool, it becomes a stress free moment for the

students. While swimming under the supervision of the swimming

coach, Mr Ryan, students learn basic swimming skills. They have

begun building confidence underwater and are now learning

swimming and breathing techniques. At the end of the day

students have fun playing and swimming in the water.

ESL AND BASIC CHINESE

Other than the activities mentioned above, ESL and Basic

Chinese classes are ongoing as well. Students who are

interested to enhance their language skills are welcome to join

these classes.

Visit by Students from Singapore International School, Vietnam

UIS had the boundless pleasure to host the students of

Singapore International School (SIS) last July 4, 2017. A total of

14 SIS students from the Primary 4, 5 and 6 levels with their

teachers had their Annual Summer Tour Visit and they spent one

memorable day with us. They participated in our daily lessons.

Every subject teacher had prepared fun and educational

activities and games for all to enjoy and learn. Both UIS and SIS

upper primary students were engaged in various activities such

as making a Tang Lung, Hari Raya greeting cards and a colorful

Kolam.

In the afternoon, there was a short program where Hari Raya

songs were sung by the UIS students. Other than that, there was

also a Fashion Show which showcased traditional costumes of

students and teachers who come from diverse cultural

backgrounds. Primary 5 students of both schools together

showed a short and lively action song entitled “The Band “. The

program concluded with a heartfelt exchange of gifts between the

students and teachers of the two Kinderworld schools.

All the students had a wonderful time making new friends and

creating marvelous memories throughout the day. We would like

to thank our new friends from SIS for spending time in our

school. We will cherish the fun times we had together.

Reminders

Parents / Guardians on Campus

An important aspect of your child’s development is their learning

to become independent. They need to be confident in a range of

areas such as eating their lunch with their peers, playing with

their friends and preparing themselves for class.

With regards to this matter, parents are only allowed to deliver

the lunch or snacks for their children. Afterwards, they are

expected to leave the school premises at once. This will enable

their children to gain independence skills which they need to

learn as they grow up.

In addition, parents who wish to speak with teachers are

requested not to interrupt the classes. Please make an

appointment to speak with the teachers at the office. Parents and

guardians are also required to write their consensus informing

the Principal that they are picking up their children in school

during school hours. Students are not allowed to leave the school

compound without written consent from the parents or guardian.

Mobile phones are not permitted to be used during lessons as

they can be a significant distraction to the students. It is preferred

that students keep their mobile phones safely in their lockers.

They may also leave the phones on the teacher’s desk during

lessons. If students are found misusing their mobile phones in

school, the teacher will confiscate it and will pass it to the

Principal. If the confiscation of the student’s mobile phone

becomes a repeated problem, then the Principal would

communicate this problem to the parents and will give the mobile

phone to them when they come to meet him personally.

School Hat Policy

Hats are compulsory for outdoor play and HPE lessons. The sun

rays in Malaysia can sometimes be quite strong . It’s important

for us to protect the physical wellbeing of the students. Too much
