In the middle of the 14th century four universities were founded in Central Europe within a time-span of two decades: Prague, Cracow, Vienna and Pécs. The Hun-garian king, Louis the Great of the Anjou dynasty, established the first Hungarian university in Pécs in 1367. The history of Hungarian higher education goes back to this date. The University of Pécs is one of the largest institutions of higher education in Hun-gary. VALUE FOR MONEY

Our tuition fees are among the most competitively priced fees of any European uni-versity. The cost of living is very attractive for Hungarian and European standards for our international students.Pécs, European Capital of Culture in 2010 and the fifth largest city in Hungary with a population of about 160,000, is a real Mediterranean beauty. It is situated in South Transdanubia, close to the borders with Croatia, Serbia, Slovenia and Austria. The city at the foothills of the Mecsek Mountains has a mild, sub-Mediterranean cli-mate.Its history goes back over 2,000 years to the Roman times. The downtown of Pécs is a unique mixture of the relics of Early Christianity (part of the World Cultural Herit-age), the arrival of the Hungarians and the foundation of the first Hungarian state with its ecclesiastic institutions, the Ottoman-Turkish Empire and the achievements of modern architecture and arts with specimens of Art Nouveau and Bauhaus.Pécs has received the prestigious title The European Capital of Culture for the year2010. Together with its museums, art galleries, libraries, cinemas and musical life,Pécs is a lively university city full of restaurants, cafés and bars. It has an incrediblyvivid student life day and night.

How to get to Pécs?The easiest way to reach Hungary from distant countries is by plane. There are flights to Budapest, the capital of Hungary, from all major air-hubs in Europe. To reach Pécs from the capital one can take an intercity train or use a minibus service, which is a direct transportation service from the airport to any address in Pécs.

MA IN CLASSICAL MUSIC EDUCATION (PIANO, VIOLIN, FLUTE, GUITAR)Faculty of Music and Visual Arts

Degree: Master of Music in Piano / Violin / Flute / GuitarDuration of training: 4 semestersLanguage of instruction: EnglishHead of the programme: Dr. Bence Vas

Description of the programme:Our Master of Music Programmes in instrument performance (Piano, Violin, Flute and Guitar) focus on developing music performance skills and artistic qualities on the highest possible level. These programmes are for the truly committed – for those young artists who do have the aim to regularly be on stage. On the instru-mental performance classes held two times a week for four semesters the goal is to achieve:

• technical abilities of a real virtuoso, • playing stability and reliability, • detailed stylistic knowledge of all major eras and genres of classical music re-

lated to the instrument studied, • an ability to shape the musical process down to the smallest nuances and shades

with ease and creativity,• a fundamental respect for the composer’s instructions, put into a viable combi-

nation with the performer’s own ideas and personality,• and, possibly most importantly: an open spirit with an honest motivation to, and

ability of, getting in touch with the emotional essence of the music performed, and communicating it to the audience in a straightforward yet sophisticated manner.

In addition to solo performance, chamber music also has an emphasized role in the programme, with one lesson per week for all semesters, with the possibility of freely trying out several different ensemble formations, or studios of different chamber music teachers.Complementary subjects such as music history, analysis or composition practice serve to further widen the range of theoretical knowledge of the student, which, in an indirect and subtle way, later alwasy puts itself in the service of the practice of musicmaking on the stage.
