Semester Long Multimodal Proposal
For the semester-long project our group has chosen the topic of the University of North
Carolina at Charlotte. The difference between the campus’ physical, social, and economic status
from 1949 to 2016 has drastically changed. From our first Chancellor Dean Colvard to
Chancellor Dubois, our group wants to review the changes. This is a broad topic but we will
dedicate our research and inquiry to historical content, logistics of UNC Charlotte, student life,
professor involvement, and how UNC Charlotte affects the Charlotte area as a whole. Within
these topics there will be subtopics; for example, with student life we will include involvement
on campus, residence life, and activities on campus. Our group also wants to see the effect that
UNC Charlotte has on the city of Charlotte itself. How many people from Charlotte actually
commute? What states and countries do we represent? We will also look at the founder Bonnie
E. Cone and her reasoning for choosing Charlotte, as well as the growth of the campus as a
whole.
Our multimodal project will be based around the development of the UNC Charlotte
campus and the UNC school system. Within this particular topic, there are a lot of different
topics and subtopics we are able to discuss in order to convey a vivid understanding to our
audience. We will go into detail about the founding of the college, its’ growth as a part of the
North Carolina School system, the current projects that are being developed, and the diversity of

the student body and student life. We will be using Prezi to present our findings visually using
aerial images of the school to show physical changes on our campus. In our prezi we will be
displaying various visual aids including videos, pictures, charts, and tables as a way to keep the
audience engaged in our presentation.
UNC Charlotte was one of the several universities founded in the Charlotte metropolitan
area immediately following World War II. Our beloved university was founded on the response
and inspiration to continue education which was generated by the war and it’s technology. In
1946, the state of North Carolina opened the Charlotte Center with an enrollment of 278
students, we have grown tremendously since then. Only three years went by and the state began
to close these “post World War II” centers. The Charlotte Center was then taken over by the city
school district and became Charlotte College, a two-year institution. In 1965 we became apart of
the North Carolina school system making us the university we are today. For our presentation,
we will build on this historical content and also include the history we are making today.
Logistically, our campus has increased tremendously in the last six years, and believe it
or not, we are still growing every year. As a whole, our group will be talking about the growth
of UNC Charlotte. Along with this subject specifically, we will cover the changes in tuition,
renovations and expansions of the campus and dorms, as well as the student to professor ratios.
Focusing a good amount on the logistics of UNC Charlotte will do our group a great deal of
success because it basically covers everything that we need for our audience to know. More
specifically, when we talk about the renovations and expansions, we have also considered talking
about the new Belk plaza, the renovations of the old dorms (Scott, Moore, etc.), as well as the

expansion of the new roads and the light rail system. There are a lot of things that we are going
to cover in our project that will provide our audience with a lot of helpful and fun facts.
The growth of the campus is also seen in the student life. There are over 300 clubs and
organizations to participate in on campus both academic and recreational as well as a thriving
Greek life. With nearly 20 residence halls and more on the way, as well as an abundance of
apartments right across the street, UNC Charlotte is becoming less and less of a commuter
school. Students can choose between traditional, suite, and even apartment style on campus
housing. When they want to head off campus, once the light rail is complete it will be a short trip
uptown. However currently, transportation for students is just a short uber ride away from
anywhere uptown, from nightlife to a Hornets game, within 15 minutes.
As we have already discussed about the student life in the previous paragraph, our next
topic would be the professor's’ side of things including the popular majors, minors, and what
they believe should be the future of UNC Charlotte. Our group is under the impression that
UNC Charlotte is the 2nd largest producer of teachers in the state of North Carolina; with that
being said, education majors (special education, secondary and elementary education) would be
some of the more populars majors here on our campus. Our project will go on to discuss why
these majors are so popular, is it the professors? Has our program grown since being apart of the
UNC system and why is that?
UNC Charlotte came into existence in 1946 as a school that came about as a result of the
GI Bill for returning veterans. However, the school has created a huge impact on the Charlotte
Metropolitan area, with an estimated $2.1 Billion dollar immediate economic impact. As a result
it makes all the renovations worth it because as the school expands so will the job opportunities

and employment options, it will feed into the local area of Charlotte. Not only is the school
becoming more competitive but it has laid itself down with many competitive programs
including the Belk College of Business. UNC Charlotte has a current enrollment of about 28,000
pupils but plan to add at least another 10,000 in the next decade or so. In addition, the Light Rail
will create an immediate impact and allow students to learn the Charlotte area even better as it
will be accessible from the campus. The school also plans to add a medical and law school to
its’ already growing arsenal of schools. UNC Charlotte is rapidly becoming a key piece of the
Charlotte Metropolitan area and this can be seen through the amount of jobs its provides the area
and the socio-economic impact it holds.
Since this is a semester long project, the expectation for roles and responsibilities of the
group are set high. Each person is responsible for their own area of research, that includes
everything within that topic. For example, Kaylah’s topic is historical content about UNC
Charlotte, so that includes why UNC Charlotte first began, why we’re called the 49ers, who is
Bonnie Cone, etc. Each group member is expected to stick to deadlines set by the group, attend
all meetings, and communicate effectively within the group. This project is a group effort, so the
work we produce should be collaborative, meaning the work we put in should be shown through
the final product.
As far as the timeline goes, we have major dates that we want to focus on
including the proposal, peer review and final due date for the annotated bibliography, and of
course the presentation date for this project. Most of the major dates are listed on the syllabus
but we have decided to include more dates to stay on track with project. As a part of this
semester long project each group member must find ten sources for their given subtopic, we plan

to meet on Monday March 14th to peer review each annotated bibliography to turn in during
class on that Tuesday. For the following week we plan to meet on Monday March 21st to
continue creating the Prezi that has already been created and discuss our design features and
what modes we will be using during the project. Every other Monday following that week we
have decided to meet to practice for the presentation to make sure we have a clear understanding
of our topic. For the Prezi we want to make it interesting to learn about our own school and what
is to come. Each group memeber is responsible for completing their own section for the Prezi
which must be done on April 21st. Then as a group we will meet to critique and fix any
grammatical or visual issues to make our project more appealing and understandable for our
audience.
Although this is a group project, each group member has their own specific subtopics
within UNC Charlotte so it is up to them to research on their own time and bring their
information forward during our meetings. Our group is excited to take on the challenge of our
own school, hopefully we will find more information than we are proposing throughout the
semester. We look forward to presenting our information to everyone.
