SOME KEY TERMS

Undergraduate The first level of study in higher education. If you graduate from an undergraduate degree you can move on to postgraduate study.

Russell Group University

The Russell Group represents 24 leading UK universities which are committed to maintaining the very best research, an outstanding teaching and learning experience and unrivalled links with business and the public sector.

Red Brick University The term is often extended to include the group of universities granted a charter between 1900 and 1963 and are the traditional, older universities.

Single Honours A degree when you study one subject.

Joint Honours A degree when you study 2 subjects.

UCAS University and Colleges Admissions Service. It is responsible for managing applications to higher education institutions.

Conditional offer An offer of a place on a course subject to conditions. To be accepted on the course you’ll need to meet the conditions – usually related to your exam results. This is a common type of offer for students applying direct from further education.

Unconditional offer In your application, an offer of a place on a course with no conditions – the place is yours if you want it.
