FROM THE D IRECTOR OF THEATRE PRODUCTION

Fireflies, fireworks on the 4th of July and frosty cold drinks on a hot day are all part of enjoying summer. Likewise, the arts offer moments of reflection, refreshment and reju-venation. I hope you are able to take part of what Madison has to offer this summer.

Welcome to UT’s summer production of [title of show]. I’d like to take this time to thank my fantastic cast, crew, and designers whose creativity and collaborative spirit made this show possible. I couldn’t have done it without you.

University Theatre is the producing wing of the Department of Theatre and Drama here at UW-Madison. The plays that you attend serve as the laboratories for our students to practice what they learn in classes offered by the Department. Your presence is a vital part of the whole learning process so we thank you for your attendance. If you are not already a member, please consider becoming a Friend of University Theatre. Information about this important support group is available in the back of your program.

It gives me pleasure to announce the 2011-2012 UT Season:

• [title of show] will be back for a short revival in September so that those who left town for the summer can enjoy it;

• Ti-Jean and His Brothers, a Derek Walcott play based on a Caribbean folk tale will open in October

• Bat Boy: The musical will bring the fall semester to a rocking end;• Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom will open the spring semester and represents the

continuation of the Lorraine Hansberry project; • Pedro and War Cantata is our Theatre for Youth production - this play is a new

work by Argentinean playwright Maria Inés Falconi;• Two Gentlemen of Verona will bring the season to a witty end with guest direc-

tor Ken Albers.

Tickets for these shows are on sale now; order online at utmadison.com or by phone at 608-265-ARTS. Please come and enjoy the variety of experiences being offered next season.

Aloha,David Furumoto

FR IENDS OF THE UNIVERS IT Y THEATRE

The FRIENDS of UT is a group of individuals that serves as a support organization for UW Madison’s University Theatre, providing members with opportunities to connect with and offer support for student actors, dramaturgs, directors, and de-signers involved in University Theatre productions. FRIENDS of UT plan and host receptions prior to productions, enjoy exceptional performances together, and work to encourage broader awareness and appreciation of the UW Department of Theatre and Drama throughout the community.

Funds raised by FRIENDS of UT will provide much needed production support, including technical enhancements such as state-of-the-art equipment up-grades, as well as special guest artist residencies that will support the training of our students.

In the past, Friends of UT have enjoyed invitations to a special post-performance reception with Olympia Dukakis as well as a pre-performance discussion with show directors. They sponsored a visit with Anthony Rapp (from the original Broadway cast of RENT). Funds raised were used to support a Suzuki acting work-shop with Brandeis Professor Eric Hill and several guest sound designers.

Last fall, the group sponsored a day trip for FUT members and UT students to Ten Chimneys in Genesee Depot, WI. This coming fall (2011), the group plans to attend a performance of the play Ten Chimneys being produced by the Milwaukee Repertory Theatre.

We are proud to share the names of the FRIENDS of UT with you throughout this season. If you would like to become a Friend of University Theatre, simply call the University Theatre office at 608-262-1582 or contribute online at utmadison.com
