It will enable you to improve your language skills and gain academic English proficiency. It will also help you to adapt to university life in the USA. The program provides you with dedicated support to help you achieve success before, during and after your studies.

Welcome to the Global Gateway Program

Learn and achieveThe 2-term GGP is the equivalent of Year 1 of undergraduate study. You will receive English language support and take academic courses led by our distinguished faculty. You are provided with the academic tools, supportive learning environment, and the right amount of course credits to advance to Year 2 of a bachelor’s degree.

GGP IntroIf you need additional English language preparation, GGP Intro is an additional semester of English-only coursework that will prepare you for the academic coursework in the 2-term program.

Fast track option If you have a higher English language level you may qualify for a 1-term GGP. Upon successful completion, you will enter into the second semester of Year 1.

GGP Pre-Master’sThe GGP Pre-Master’s is designed to prepare you for graduate-level study at the University of Vermont.

What can I expect from the GGP?⋅ Dedicated staff to help with all aspects of your application, placement, and records.

Regardless of where you start, you’ll be taught by UVM teachers, take academic courses with other GGP students and academic content courses with American students.

What does it mean to be a Global Gateway student? It means you’ll be welcomed into our community and fully supported in your academic pursuits from the day you arrive on campus. Answers to frequently asked questions by students looking to apply to the GGP, are listed below.

Do I study English language?Yes. Depending on your language level, you may take the 1-, 2-, or 3-term Global Gateway Program.

Do I study academic courses?Yes. You take specialized academic courses that fulfill the University’s general education requirements and fully prepare you to enter your degree program while enrolled in either the 1-term or 2-term program.

Do I take classes with American students? Yes. During the 1-term and 2-term GGP, you will take your elective math or science courses with American students.

Do I get academic credit that counts towards my degree? Yes. You will take credit-bearing courses in the 1-term or 2-term GGP. Credits vary by course.

Will I get extra academic support and learn study skills?Yes. The Global Gateway Program at the University of Vermont provides all students with additional support to help you succeed academically.

After the GGP, do I continue into the second year of my undergraduate degree program?Yes. Upon successful completion of the 2-term GGP, you will move into the second year of your degree program. Students who complete the 1-term program will move into the second semester of Year 1.

Can I graduate after four years of an undergraduate program? Yes. Students who successfully complete the academic coursework of the GGP and their degree program can graduate after 4 years.

Do I get extra personal help to adjust to living in America?Yes. The GGP staff will support you to ensure you adapt to being an active member of the student community and to living in USA.

Do I lose time in the GGP?No. You do not lose time during the GGP. You can still graduate in four years, similar to direct entry undergraduate students.

Graduate students who start in the Pre-Master's Program can complete their degree in two years.

Is there an application fee?No. There is no application fee for the GGP.

Do I get a university-issued I-20?Yes. The University of Vermont issues the I-20 and will work with you to renew your I-20 after the GGP.

Do I need to submit letters of recommendation to apply?No. Letters of recommendation are not required for Global Gateway Program applicants.

Am I taught by university faculty?Yes. The GGP is taught entirely by expert University of Vermont faculty.

Will it take long to receive an admissions decision?No. GGP applications are reviewed promptly.

¥ Common math electives are: MATH 019 (Fundamentals of Calculus I) or MATH 021 (Calculus I). The math elective is determined by your math placement test taken prior to arrival. Some students may be placed into a higher or lower-level math course.

± A student’s study plan is determined by his/her arrival English placement test, which may be longer or shorter than his/her original study plan in the offer letter. Changes to a student's study plan may be made at the discretion of Center Director upon arrival.

On-site testing upon arrival will confirm your English level and verify final placement. Students must successfully complete the entire one, two or three consecutive terms of the Global Gateway Program with a minimum cumulative 2.5 GPA (or 3.2 for the School of Business) to matriculate into a UVM degree program.

Grossman School of Business Our University means business The fascinating curriculum will prepare you for a rewarding career in the business world. Courses offer a broad understanding of all the business basics, including accounting, management, marketing, finance, and operations. It also gives you the opportunity to specialize in one specific concentration.

College of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences The science of success The College of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences is home to the School of Engineering, Department of Computer Science, and Department of Mathematics and Statistics. The College offers a stimulating, professionally oriented academic program, based on challenging course work, valuable field experience, and intensive interaction between students and faculty.

College of Nursing and Health SciencesFor healthy minds Working in partnership with UVM Medical Center, the College of Nursing and Health Sciences provides a truly exceptional academic experience. Our courses offer you a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a clinical practice setting, and gain the necessary skills to become a fully qualified health-care professional.

UVM Medical Center was named ‘Best Regional Hospital’ in the U.S. News & World Report. College of Arts and Sciences The fine art of education The College of Arts and Sciences will give you a small, liberal arts school feel with the resources of a large research state university. Choose from 45 different majors across a wide spectrum of disciplines – from fine arts and humanities to social, natural and mathematical sciences. The Rubenstein School of Environment and Natural Resources Let nature take your course At the Rubenstein School of Environment and Natural Resources, the Green Mountain landscape acts as a living, breathing classroom. You will work in the field on research assignments that combine natural sciences with social perspectives. In this school, you’ll discover the knowledge, skills, and values to become an ecologically responsible leader of tomorrow.

Expand your horizons The state-of-the-art lab facilities enable you to truly understand the world around you. The University of Vermont also collaborates with other research centers across Vermont, and many undergraduates extend their studies by joining research projects supported by the National Science Foundation, Harvard Forest Summer Research Program, and the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center.

College of Education and Social ServicesAction through engagement The College of Education and Social Services provides undergraduates with the necessary skills to become lifelong educators. You will gain first-hand experience in a classroom environment in the on-campus Children’s Center and within the Burlington School District. This is essential preparation for a career addressing the educational needs of Vermont and beyond.

College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Cultivate your skills The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences has an impressive range of courses in a stimulating environment. While still connected to traditional agriculture, the College’s diverse program addresses many of the current issues facing the future on a local and global level – from molecular genetics and animal ecosystems to human nutrition and international development.

The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences’ degree programs are backed by millions of dollars in competitive research funding. The College received $4.7 million of research awarded to faculty in 2014 and has four off-site research and teaching facilities across the state.

Global Gateway Program for Graduate Study

The Pre-Master’s Program is designed to prepare students for graduate-level study at UVM. Students can choose from six challenging and inspiring degree programs within the College of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences (CEMS).

The 2-term program introduces four courses per semester taught by University faculty and offering academic credit. Two of these courses each semester will be taught with other graduate students for graduate credit.

Students will earn a total of 24 credits, 12 towards their graduate degree program

Progression requirements: Oral test proficiency level equivalent to direct admit requirement of 6.5 IELTS or 90 TOEFL.

3.0 GPA in UVM coursework.

*Subject area courses will vary depending on the chosen degree program. Options include: STAT 251 (Probability Theory), MATH 237 (Introduction to Numerical Analysis), CE/EE/ME 218 (Numerical Methods for Engineering), ME 249 (Computational Fluids Engineering), CS 243 (Theory of Computation).

Global Gateway Program for Pre-Master’s Study

Choose your program:

Engineering Programs MS in Civil and Environmental Engineering UVM offers an MS degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) with research, project, and coursework options. Our outstanding CEE faculty with expertise in materials and structural, geotechnical, transportation, hydrological and environmental engineering provide exciting teaching and research opportunities to address societal challenges related to sustainability and energy, infrastructure systems, hazard mitigation and climate change, and environmental and public health.

MS in Electrical Engineering UVM offers an MS degree with research, project, and coursework options led by outstanding Electrical Engineering faculty addressing global issues and technological challenges. Opportunities also exist for collaborative research projects with industry partners and national research laboratories. Research areas include power/energy systems, wireless communications, electromagnetics, signal processing, materials and devices, microelectronics, and control systems.

MS in Mechanical Engineering Success in the Mechanical Engineering program is largely due to the distinguished faculty whose research is recognized nationally and internationally through innovation, published journals, and research awards. Recently, the faculty has won major awards from the Department of Defense, Department of Energy, NASA, and the National Science Foundation. The focus is to create a research environment that is highly interdisciplinary and collaborative from which students can thrive.

Research opportunities for MS students in mechanical engineering at UVM exist in six areas: (1) Computational multiscale simulations and theory; (2) Aerospace engineering; (3) Biology and medical research; (4) Dynamical systems; (5) Micro and nanotechnology; and (6) Sustainable energy and manufacturing.

Computer Science/Mathematics/ Statistics Programs

MS in Computer Science Computer Science program offers three options for MS degrees; coursework-only or project-based MS are ideal for more professionally minded students, whereas a thesis-based MS is well-suited to those interested in research. All MS students are initially accepted into the coursework-only option and then some transition into the project- or thesis-based option when they identify a faculty supervisor. The program has research-active faculty in diverse areas including bioinformatics, combinatorial design, complex systems, crowd-sourcing, database, data mining, data streaming, distributed systems, evolutionary computation, evolutionary robotics, image analysis, knowledge-based systems, machine learning, pattern recognition, programming languages, symbolic logic, web information exploration, and wireless sensor networks.

MS in Mathematics Students in the mathematics program can choose a subject from analysis, algebra, discrete mathematics and applied mathematics. Students in the MS program can pursue research with faculty specializing in classical analysis, harmonic analysis, Fourier analysis, algebra, number theory, graph theory, combinatorics, complex systems, fluid mechanics, biomathematics, differential equations, numerical analysis, and modeling.

MS in Statistics This degree program is designed primarily for students who plan careers in business, actuarial science, industry, government or advanced training in disciplines that make extensive use of statistical principles and methods. The faculty is deeply involved in consulting and collaborative research in a wide variety of fields, including industry, agriculture and in the basic and clinical medical sciences. These research activities offer students unique opportunities to apply their classroom training to ‘real world’ problems.

Student Dining ServicesServing all undergraduate students, UVM Student Dining Services operates 17 dining facilities across campus, from small cafés to all-you-can-eat buffets.

Graduate students can choose to purchase a meal plan through Student Dining Services.

Bailey/Howe Library In addition to housing the largest collection of books in Vermont, the library also contains the Cyber Café and Writing Center.

Davis Center The heart of campus life, this student center is a great place to eat, relax, and study.

Research FacilitiesUVM is home to dozens of research facilities both on and off campus. Innovative facilities include the Entomology Research Laboratory for environmental sciences, the Complex Systems Center for engineering, and the Vermont Advanced Computing Center for computer science.

Marsh-Austin-Tupper (MAT) MAT is home to the Global Gateway Program at the University of Vermont. As an undergraduate GGP student, you will live and study in Marsh-Austin-Tupper. GGP Pre-Master’s students will be placed in university-approved housing.

Campus area transportation system A convenient shuttle service makes it easy to navigate the campus. It stops at several places, including the Global Gateway Program offices.

Gutterson Fieldhouse and Patrick Gymnasium Home to the Vermont Catamounts sport teams, the fitness center is open to all students.

Campus dining The University features 17 dining facilities, including all-you-can-eat cafeterias, small cafés, a campus pub, and a student-run deli. You’ll have a wide range of cuisine to choose from.

Safety on campus Located in the safest state in the country, the University has taken extra steps to ensure students feel at ease. Highly visible wall-mounted or free-standing blue lights are placed throughout the campus, providing instant two-way communication with police services.

Davis Center

Your comfortable, convenient second home UVM requires students to live on campus for the first two years of their undergraduate degree program. Undergraduate GGP students will live in Marsh-Austin-Tupper (MAT), located in the heart of the student community. Conveniently, it is also home to the Global Gateway Program support services.

Accommodation

Fireplace lounge Warm up during the winter months in the cozy lounge space located in the lobby, complete with comfortable couches and a gas fireplace.

Community kitchen Share your traditional cuisine with your new friends in the community kitchen. It includes two stoves and ovens, sink, refrigerator, and plenty of counter space for any dish you desire.

Multipurpose room The lobby of MAT features a multipurpose room that is great for hosting community events or providing a quiet place to study.

Mailboxes You will have access to a locked and passcode-protected personal mailbox to receive your packages and letters while living on campus.

Two-person room Each room comes with two twin-size beds, two desks, and two dressers for comfortable living with your roommate. Rooms are secured with a key that only you and your roommate have.

Further informationAfter year two, you can choose to continue to live on campus, or move into an off-campus residency. On-campus accommodation includes traditional two-person dormitory rooms, suite-style housing, or on-campus apartments.

If you wish to live off campus after year two, you can rent apartments ranging from a one-bedroom studio to a five bedroom house.

Off-campus accommodation for graduates PMP students will be living in the Spinner Place apartment complex in nearby Winooski Vermont, 2.5km from the University of Vermont Campus.

About Spinner PlaceEasily accessible by public transportation (free for UVM students), Spinner Place is described as a place that combines the fun and freedom of off-campus housing with the convenience and amenities of living on campus. Fully-furnished apartment homes are available in 2-and 4-bedroom floor plans.

Living in Winooski, VermontDowntown Winooski, Vermont is a vibrant and diverse community located just outside of downtown Burlington. Overlooking the Winooski River, you will be in walking distance from great restaurants serving local and international cuisine, as well as coffee shops and music lounges.

· Submit the enrollment deposit payment.

· Submit a scanned copy or original recent bank document (dated within three months) translated into English indicating sufficient funds.

· Receive I-20 for your visa interview.

Before you arrive · Submit your housing application.

· Notify us when you’ve received your visa.

· Send your flight arrival information form.

· Pay your next tuition payment.

· Review your pre-arrival documents.

· Prepare your medical immunization records.

· For undergraduate students: Take the math placement test online. You will be sent the link and directions by UVM after you confirm your enrollment.

When you arrive

· Bring your original academic transcripts and leaving certificate in sealed envelopes with the school stamp or seal and official English translation.

· Official academic records issued by the previous institution may be sent directly to University of Vermont, prior to orientation.

· Bring a copy of your immunization records translated into English.

· A complete and accurate application form including your intended degree program, and your email address and telephone number.

· A scanned copy of your official test scores from an English language test such as IELTS or TOEFL. Don’t have an English language test score? Contact us about Embassy English or the free Password test.

· Scanned copies of your certified academic transcripts in your native language and translated into English (translation must be authenticated).

· A scanned copy of your certified proof of graduation in your native language and translated into English, if available at the time of your application.

· Student essay.

· For Pre-Master's applicants: three letters of recommendation.

· A copy of the identification pages of your passport.

· A copy of your current I-20, visa, and I-94, if applicable.
