University of the Philippines Mindanao Highlights of 2011 Highlights in Infrastructure: Concreting of the University Avenue and its internal road network started and was completed in 2011 with funds from the UP System in the amount of P10.8 Million. A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held to open the new University Avenue on 15 April 2011 in anticipation of the 14th Commencement Exercises on 18 April. Names of the new University roads and lanes: 1. University Avenue the road from the first guard post to the Oblation plaza, with a view of Mt. Apo and Mt. Talomo 2. Oblation Circle the road around the Oblation plaza. 3. Student Center Lane the road connecting University Avenue to Bagobo Road, passing in front of the University Student Council building, Kalimudan grounds, and Himati building. 4. Bagobo Road the road from the Davao City Training and Rehabilitation Center for Drug Dependents (DCTRCDD) up to the boundary of the newly paved road located beyond the EBL Hall-Dormitory. 5. Bagobo Lane the road from the Oblation Circle to the Bagobo Road, passing alongside the Admin. Bldg. covered pathwalk 6. Maguindanao Road the road from the boundary of the Bagobo Road to the front of the College of Science and Mathematics lawn. 7. Highlights in Instruction and Scholarships The 14th Commencement Exercises were held on 18 April. The Class of 2011 had 197 graduates led by magna cum laudes Marie Analiz April Limpoco (BS Applied Mathematics) and Exegesis Jedidiah Ebarle (BS Agribusiness Economics) and twelve cum laudes. The Commencement Speaker was Architect Jeremy Roy Sanchez (BS Architecture‘08), the 5th Placer in the 2010 Licensure Examination for Architecture. Scholarship providers and number of scholars for Academic Year 2010-2011, were as follows:

UP Mindanao served as the 2012 UPCAT testing center for Davao City on August 6-7, 2011. The DULA 2011 (University-wide intramurals) Opening Program and Cheerdance Competition was held in August-September. Co-Champions were School of Management and College of Science and Mathematics.

Academic Highlights

College of Humanities and Social Sciences All twelve BS Architecture graduates of UP Mindanao who took the June 2011 Licensure Exam for Architects (LEA) passed, once more achieving the 100%-passing mark that UP Mindanao has maintained in the past number of years. The Hiroshima University Partnership Project for Peacebuilding and Capacity Development (HiPeC) entered into a tripartite partnership with UP Mindanao and the South-South Network for Non-State Armed Group Engagement (SSN-NSAG) through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on 29 March 2011. The tripartite held its first international conference, “UNDERCURRENTS: Imagining a Post-Peace Agreement Period in Mindanao” on 1-2 December 2011. College of Science and Mathematics Department of Science and Technology Secretary Mario G. Montejo inspected the DOST-funded laboratory facilities and received a briefing on the sago palm biotechnology research program on 15 October 2011. He approved Phase 2 of the research program with an additional P20 Million. UP Scientist I, Prof. Eufemio Rasco, published, “The Nypa Palm: Natures Gift from the Age of the Dinosaurs”, as sole author. School of Management The research program, "Economics of Agribusiness Value Chain" was awarded in 2011 as Best Regional Research Program for 2010 by the Commission on Higher Education-XI. School of Management Professor Larry N. Digal was appointed UP Scientist 1 under the 2011 Scientific Productivity System, the only appointee from UP Mindanao, in ceremonies held on 28 October 2011 at Bahay ng Alumni. Research SMARRDEC’s 24th Regional Symposium on Research and Development Highlights was held at Davao del Norte State College on 04 August . The 3rd Agribusiness Economics Conference, "Enhancing the Performance of the Agribusiness Industry: Linking Research Findings to Users", was held on 13-14 July 2011. The conference highlighted the research findings of the ACIAR-funded project on “Economic Impacts of New Technology and Policy Constraints in the Production of Fruit and Vegetables in the Philippines and Australia.”

Science for Society symposium on 23 August was a contribution in the continuing effort towards responsible and socially relevant scientific knowledge, attended by officials of Davao City Council, NEDA-XI, Dept. of Agriculture, DENR, among others. BS Architecture students won "Visioning Contest for Sustainable Urban Transport for Davao City", a project supported by Asian Development Bank, Davao City Government and Dept. of Transportation and Communications (DOTC). Madam Hisae Peggy Isoda donated copies of her book, “My Collection of Ikebana” on 10 June, to Chancellor Rivero and the Architecture faculty, through the UPAA-Davao. Visit Japan 2011 under the Jenesys program had five Youth Ambassadors from UP Mindanao. Davao Writers' Workshop was held on Oct. 11-15 with 15 fellows in the workshop categories of fiction, essay, poetry and the one-act play. Reading the Writer: Seminar on Creative Writing and Teaching the Literary Craft was held by Office of Extension and Community Service with Dept. of Humanities on 13-15 April 2011 for poetry, fiction, play writing, creative non-fiction, and children's literature Araw ng Mintal - UP Night was held with participation of Koro Katingugan, UP Mindanao Dance Ensemble, and AMPLI student org. on 06 December. Tribute to National Artist Edith Tiempo was organized by UP Mindanao Literary Society, 21 September. Forum on Peace Talks Updates was held on September 7 with lecture on "The Philippine Government Proposal and Finding Common Ground with MILF" by Prof. Miriam Coronel-Ferrer, member of the GPH Negotiation Panel. BA Social Science graduate Errol A. Merquita won Second Prize in the Short Story in Cebuano Category of the 2011 Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature with his entry titled “Isla Verde”.

The Davao City Council Committee on Agriculture and Food held a public hearing on the Bt Eggplant on February 3, 2011 with Chancellor Rivero, Prof. Rasco, and other scientists and concerned sectors. A Forum, food-tasting and fruit-picking of eggplant was held by the Integrated Pest Management (IPM) project team on the 19 May 2011. A Seminar on Eggplant Fruit and Shoot Borer Pest Management was held on August 1. This is the third Seminar on the EFSB pest management on that year. Food Safety Seminar was given by the Dept. of Food Science and Chemistry and Office of Extension and Community Service on 19 October. The Seminar had 140 participants. Classroom on the Web, a one (1) day seminar- workshop by Dept. of Math, Physics and Computer Science and Office of Extension and Community Service was held on October 24, 2011 for educators who wish to create their own websites. Taco and Kikiam-making demo was made by Department of Food Science and Chemistry (DFSC) and the Office of Extension and Community Service (OECS) for members of the Bgy. Bago Oshiro and Bgy. Mintal community, as well as UP Mindanao constituents on 25 May 2011. Sensory Evaluation Workshop for Franklin Baker Company (coconut processor) was made by Department of Food Science and Chemistry and the Office of Extension and Community Service on 09-10 June 2011.

Farmer-partners from Marilog and Calinan participated in the Davao Trade Expo on October 20-22. These activities are under the research project titled “Enhanced profitability of smallholder vegetable producers in Southern Philippines and Australia (HORT/2007/066)”, supported by ACIAR. UP Mindanao Professor and former Vice-Chancellor Miguel Soledad was installed as 4th President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Davao Doctors College, Inc. (DDC) on September 23, 2011. Prof. Soledad will be on leave from UP Mindanao throughout his tenure. Lecture on "Environmental Uncertainty, Organizational Volatility and the Strategy Dilemma" was given by Dr. Niceto Poblador on 24 September.

Davao City flood victims on June 28-29 received clothes and foodstuffs from UPMin constituents, distributed on 02-04 July.

Typhoon Sendong victims received 14 boxes of clothing and 80 containers of water of 6 liters each from UP Mindanao constituents in December 2011.

Operation of the UP Mindanao Infirmary was discussed on 18 April, and 27 May with Betan Spirit Foundation, Inc. and Medical Mission Group Hospitals (MMGHHSCP). Medical Mission Group CEO, Dr. Jose "Ting" Tiongco consulted barangay captains and government institutions in September-October to propose operating the Infirmary as a cooperative.

TAGBO - UPMin! The 2nd Student Leadership Training Camp, with 26 student organizations, was held on July 27-29, 2011 with assistance from Ayala Foundation, Durian City Jaycees and UP Alumni Association - Davao Chapter.

UPAA-Greater Chicago donated $30,000.00 through Ms. Grace Villamora and Ms. Evelyn Espina, on January 27-28, 2011.

Betans delivered medicine donations to the UP Mindanao Infirmary, 18 April

The Regional Alumni Institute was held on February 12, 2011 at the Marco Polo Hotel, attended by UP President Alfredo Pascual, UPAA President Gladys Tiongco and Directors.

Oblation Plaza Landscaping Project, the 1st Phase, was completed and opened on September 9, 2011.

The Tee-4-Two Open Golf Tournament was held on October 15, 2011 for the benefit of UPAA Davao Math Literacy Project and the UP Mindanao Oblation project.

Run4Change, through UPAA Davao, donated uniforms for the UP Mindanao Ladies Football Team, December 16, 2011.

UPAA Davao sponsored the Tagbo 2011 UP Mindanao Student Leadership Camp.

The UPAA Davao Math Literacy Project was launched November 17, 2011 with Dr. Emil Javier.
