    Recognizing Your Generosity

  • F R O M T H E

    PresidentDear Friends of USA,

Thank you for your support of Upward & Onward, A Campaign for the University of South Alabama. With your help, our university continues to grow in quality and impact, yet it remains a place known for its people and their dedication to students, patients, and others we serve. By helping to advance five priorities of the University’s strategic plan, the campaign is helping students by expanding access through scholarships, promoting student success with programs such as “First Generation,” which helps address the unique challenges of being the first in a family to attend college, and building career-ready experience with more opportunities for student research, internships and graduate education. Another new initiative, Global USA, is bringing together resources to advance the strategic priority of global engagement by coordinating essential programs and services supporting international outreach and engagement. Global USA will benefit our international community of students and faculty, as well as provide more opportunities for other students who want to further develop their international interests. Your campaign gifts are helping neighbors live longer, healthier lives by extending excellent health services through the USA Health System, including USA Medical Center, USA Children’s and Women’s Hospital, USA Mitchell Cancer Institute and the USA Physicians Group. As part of an academic health center, our hospitals and clinics deliver essential training experiences for the next generation of health care professionals while offering advanced and innovative patient care. Two new facilities, the Strada Patient Care Center and Kilborn Clinic of the USA Mitchell Cancer Institute, will give our communities even better access to USA Health System’s exceptional services. Together, we are moving the University of South Alabama Upward & Onward. Thank you.

    Sincerely,

    Tony G. Waldrop, Ph.D.President

  • Abraham Mitchell has been a part of many pivotal moments of the University’s history. Mitchell and his brother Mayer, a member of the USA Board of Trustees for over 30 years until his death in 2007, became involved with USA early on in its life. The Mitchell family remains a vital part of our University’s story. The Mitchell-Moulton Scholarship Initiative (MMSI) is the most recent example of the Mitchell family’s involvement in paving the way to South’s next achievement.

Mitchell and four recipients of scholarship opportunities created through the MMSI recently had the chance to meet one another. Together they spent the morning sharing their appreciation for each other and talking about the doors these scholarships are opening.

The MMSI, a $50 million matching initiative, is a commitment to expanding opportunities for current and future USA students by providing access to an affordable college education. It is also a way for Mitchell to honor the late President V. Gordon Moulton.

“I had an excellent relationship with Gordon,” Mitchell said. “He was sort of a mentor, and he and I began to engage in conversation about South Alabama being able to compete with other universities in the state.”

Moulton and Mitchell knew something needed to be done to place USA on par with other universities in our state. Together they shared a vision of expanding scholarship opportunities for incoming students.

“I told Gordon I would agree to support USA scholarships on a match basis,” Mitchell said. “Thus far we’ve seen good success with businesses and individuals supporting this initiative.”

Supporting education has been an interest of Mitchell’s since he returned to Mobile many years ago. His time spent as an interim Mobile County district attorney helped that interest grow deeper.

“I saw something remarkable during my tenure as interim district attorney,” Mitchell said. “The people

who are exposed to the criminal justice system rarely are educated, so I wanted to do something to help educate them.”

The MMSI reflects Mitchell’s vision of education as a means to improve our community far into the future. He knows this initiative will open doors and create opportunities for students to follow their dreams.

“When I look at students who get scholarships, and look at those fresh faces, I feel like maybe I’ve received as much as I’ve given,” Mitchell said.

The four MMSI scholars were able to sit down with Mitchell to tell him what his commitment to their education means.

“It blows my mind that someone who doesn’t even know me personally would care enough about my education to want to invest in my education and my future,” junior Derek Rowan said.

Among the students, there was an overwhelming feeling of pure gratitude for Mitchell’s role in helping create the $50 million scholarship initiative.

Christian Manganti, a freshman who scored a perfect 36 on the ACT, cannot wait to see the type of impact the MMSI will have on South Alabama as the university continues to grow.

“The MMSI is giving more young people an opportunity to better their lives through education without having to worry about the financial aspects that bar most people from pursing higher education,” Manganti said.

Mitchell treasures being able to spend time with students who are benefitting from the MMSI and seeing that what he is doing while he is here is helping to change lives.

“You’re looking at a very lucky guy,” Mitchell said. “We were all born to die, so rather than determining what can happen to my assets after I take the trip, I thought I would pre-plan and watch them make a difference while I’m still here.”

“I’m 82 years old, and I don’t often get a chance to talk to young people,” Mitchell added. “I’m always very enthusiastic and enjoy the time I get to spend with students.”

The hour spent together reiterated the awareness of the impact of the Mitchell-Moulton Scholarship Initiative is having on people who are a part of the USA family. Mitchell left parting words for all current and future recipients of a MMSI scholarship.

“The best way you can repay me or the school is to just be good productive citizens,” Mitchell said. “You do that, that’s considered payment in full.”

National Merit Scholar, Christian Manganti, was awarded the USA Board of Trustees Endowed Scholarship for academic year 2016-2017. Manganti is among less than one percent of all high school students nationwide to have a perfect ACT score of 36. He plans to major in biomedical sciences on a pre-medicine track, with the hope of pursuing a career in medicine.

“From the get-go, choosing South was an easy decision for me. The welcoming nature of everyone I encountered on campus and the generous scholarships I was awarded were pivotal factors in my decision. The Mitchell-Moulton Scholarship Initiative is attracting students from all walks of life to come to South. These scholarships are shining examples of South’s commitment to education and its recognition of academic excellence. Money is the deciding factor for many who wish to attend college, so giving students the opportunity to do so is a beautiful thing.”

Alexys Brown, Junior, Ocean Springs, MS

    Raven McShan, Sophomore, Mobile, AL

“The best way for me to repay Mr. Mitchell and South Alabama is to lead other students in the right direction toward scholarships. To tell them that their passion is worth it — no matter how much money they are going to make, and reminding them that what you love to do is worth it, and it is possible going to South Alabama.” — Alexys Brown

“The scholarship I received from South Alabama is the main reason I came here. Being someone who has been blessed to earn a scholarship makes me want to be a better individual and give my all when I become an educator. I will do my best to inspire my future students to shoot for higher education, so they can further their success.”— Raven McShan

Throughout life we have many moments we recognize as having a great impact on who we become. Those experiences are what make our lives unique to us and those who accompany us on the journey. USA has been home to many paramount moments in the lives of its 74,000 alumni. For Julian MacQueen, the experiences he created during his education at South set the stage for the success he has today.

MacQueen, a Birmingham area native, credits South for taking a chance on him 40 years ago. He went on to become a USA Distinguished Alumni Award recipient, and now the University has named the future alumni center to recognize him and his wife Kim for their commitment to the USA family. “I came here as a student under probation and there are a lot of reasons for that,” MacQueen said. “The fact that USA was willing to take a chance on me was huge.”

South did more than just take a chance on a kid who’d come from what he’d call “a very protected environment.” It thrust him into a beautiful, diverse and challenging world. “I was the only one over several generations of my family who didn’t go to the University of Alabama,” MacQueen added. “Attending USA showed me the world as I’d never seen it before. I found a diverse open place that made available experiences that I’d never imagined.”

MacQueen’s participation in an experimental college program — that allowed any area of interest to be taught to students — introduced him to the Baha’i Faith. From that moment on, his life would forever be changed. “When I think about Julian coming to South,

knowing he came from this very insular community, and for him to experience the richness of diversity, while receiving a quality education was life changing for him,” said Kim.

The MacQueens’ gift to the University acknowledges the fact that had it not been for South, he wouldn’t be a Baha’i. “Kim and I wanted to use this as an opportunity to highlight the openness of the philosophy of the University at that time. This gift wasn’t given to make Kim and me the central point. It was given to acknowledge that the Baha’i Faith has been such a pivotal part in our lives. We credit USA for opening that door.”

The MacQueens want the Alumni Center to be a place on campus that fosters a creative and diverse culture like the one they have cultivated in their company, Innisfree Hotels. “We take care of each other and create a family of support at Innisfree Hotels,” MacQueen added, “It’s very important for us to create unity in everything we do. We’ve realized that can’t happen unless there is a gathering place, and we hope the Alumni Center is going to be exactly that.”

“One thing I’ve been impressed with, having not attended school here, is the strength and the enthusiasm of the National Alumni Association,” Kim said. “The Association fosters support for the University and gives alumni a place to be a part of USA’s legacy, and I think that is a wonderful thing.”

The Julian and Kim MacQueen Alumni Center is expected to open in 2018.

    Rural Medicine Practice Made Possible

Giving back and taking care of the rural community was very important to the late Dr. Ernest G. DeBakey. He was recognized by his peers as one of the preeminent general surgeons in the Southeast during his career that spanned 60 years. He established the Ernest G. DeBakey Charitable Foundation (DeBakey Foundation) to benefit medical students who have the desire to practice in underserved communities. The DeBakey Foundation has provided the USA College of Medicine more than $2 million to support scholarships for students who are committed to practicing in rural Alabama.

Dr. Gretchen Vandiver, a 2012 scholarship recipient and 2016 College of Medicine graduate, will forever be grateful to the DeBakey Foundation. “It’s amazing to me that I get to finish residency and I won’t have any debt,” said Vandiver. “I think it is incredible that the foundation is able to do this-- support students who are focusing on primary care and want to practice in rural areas of our state.”

Vandiver’s ambition is to practice in a small town. “I’ve wanted to be a pediatrician since I was in the second grade growing up in Cullman, Alabama,” Vandiver added. “I really like the sense of community in small towns, and the fact that you really get to know your patients, get to see them at the grocery store, and that you get to be an active member in your community.”

The scholarship has created a valuable partnership between the DeBakey Foundation and South’s medical school that assists and guides students as they commit to practicing rural medicine. “Receiving the DeBakey scholarship to attend South prepared me so well,” Vandiver said. “I’m extremely appreciative of the opportunities I had when I was in medical school and the trainings I received.”

The DeBakey Foundation is taking critical steps to address the need for more physicians in our underserved communities. Marsha DeBakey, wife of the late Dr. DeBakey and head of the DeBakey Foundation, is committed to finding a way to educate young people and send them back into the rural communities that are without or lacking primary care physicians. The scholarship recipients must commit to spending at least five years in an underserved, rural Alabama community as a primary care provider.

By providing scholarships, the DeBakey Foundation is freeing students to choose rural medicine jobs, which are typically lower paying. “I think this scholarship is a way to encourage future doctors to remember to take care of the underserved community too,” Vandiver said. “We’ve been given a gift and the ability to become a doctor, and I am able to share this gift with those who normally might not have access to adequate care.”

“I think this scholarship is a way to encourage future doctors to remember to take care of the underserved community.”

South’s chapter of Phi Sigma Iota (PSI) — the international foreign language honor society — may be new to campus, but it has quickly become a philanthropic leader among USA’s more than 200 student groups. The group is one of the few USA student groups to establish an endowed scholarship through the Mitchell-Moulton Scholarship Initiative. This achievement also distinguishes South’s chapter nationally as only the second of more than 250 chapters to establish a scholarship at its institution.

“The students really took the leadership and initiative to make this scholarship a reality,” said Dr. Zoya Khan, associate professor of modern & classical languages and literature and faculty advisor for PSI.

The students got creative and used their skills and their interest in international communication to create bumper stickers that say “Go Jags!” in 16 different languages and handmade coffee mugs with “We are South” written in Russian, Spanish, French and German.

They also sold custom Valentine’s Day cards for international students to send to friends and family members written in their native languages.

“We are so very grateful to the many USA students and faculty and to the greater Mobile community who helped to bring this scholarship to fruition,” said Khan.

According to Austin Gilchrist, the 2016 president of South’s chapter, the group has taken a lead role in promoting foreign languages and cultures both on campus and in the greater Mobile community — hosting activities as varied as foreign language poetry slams, a lecture series and an annual essay contest for high school students. “The group’s efforts allowed us to not only create the scholarship, but also helped USA put foreign languages and cultural diversity in front of a wider audience,” said Gilchrist.

The group has also quickly made its mark nationally. For three years running, a member has been selected to receive one of only 12 scholarships awarded annually by the national PSI office. Speaking about this achievement Gilchrist said, “I think the students are doing their best to make sure that USA is known nationally and internationally.”

For most who live in the Mobile region, the work of the Mitchell Cancer Institute (MCI) is widely known and well respected. Since its inception in 2000, MCI has been the only center in the Gulf Coast area to combine innovative, academic-based cancer research with state-of-the-art cancer treatments. For Joe and Jean Byrum, MCI’s formidable reputation made the decision to give an easy one.

“My wife, Jean, and I have been in Mobile for 30 years, and we try to give back what we’ve been blessed with,” said Byrum. “We really appreciate the work MCI does in fighting cancer and working to find cures, and we wanted to be a part of it.”

The Byrum’s gift will be used to purchase a nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer (NMR). This instrument will be a tremendous asset to the research and researchers at MCI. “If you can imagine how important an MRI is to a neurosurgeon or orthopedic surgeon, and how they allow surgeons to see the brain, bones, and spines, the NMR is that much and more for our scientists,” Dr. Mike Finan, MCI director said. “The NMR provides our teams of chemists the same imaging capabilities as an MRI does, as they design drugs that fight or cure cancer.”

The advanced imaging capabilities of the NMR will position MCI scientists to be ahead of the curve in advancing the fight against cancer. The need for this instrument spiked Byrum’s interest and he saw an opportunity to help take MCI to the next level. “We’ve seen numerous friends and family members battle cancer and the toll it takes on everyone,” Byrum added. “We wanted to be able to do our small part in helping defeat cancer. That’s why MCI is important to us, and having a facility like that based here is very important to us and the community.”

Giving to MCI was something that came naturally to the Byrums. They have a passion for supporting their community and the institutions that help it thrive. Their strong faith is what motivates them to do their part in moving Mobile forward. “Our faith is very important to us, and we believe that you need to give back what God has given you,” Byrum said.

Byrum hopes his gift inspires others to follow his lead and give back now rather than later. “It’s a much better feeling to give while you’re still here to see the reward of your gift,” Byrum said. “Giving now allows me to see the scientists get closer to finding the cures we need to battle diseases.”

For the past three decades, the USA Children’s and Women’s Hospital (CWH) has been serving Mobile and surrounding areas. Pro baseball star and Mobile native, Jake Peavy, wanted to do something to benefit CWH because of his passionate appreciation for organizations that serve Mobile children and families.

“I’ve had the privilege to play in San Francisco, Boston, Chicago, and San Diego throughout my career,” Peavy said. “I care about the communities I’ve been welcomed to, but I wanted to do something that would take care of home. Mobile and the community here mean so much to me.”

The Jake Peavy Foundation hosted its fourth annual charity golf classic locally at the Magnolia Grove Golf Course, and designated a portion of the proceeds to CWH in honor of his cousins, Blaze and Brayleigh Claire Rich. The twins were born prematurely at CWH on Christmas Eve 2014.

“After my family received such amazing care at CWH, I wanted to do something to honor my cousins and also to say thank you to the incredible staff that took care

of them,” Peavy said. “The golf tournament was me being able to do my part, so the hospital will have the resources to serve families when they need it most.”

Because of the high level of care the Rich twins received at CWH, they were able to overcome incredible obstacles and are happy and healthy today. “Jake’s family has seen first-hand the positive effects of having this hospital in his hometown,” Jake Peavy Foundation Executive Director, Sarah Lauren Allen said. “He wanted to use his annual golf tournament as a platform to share his family’s story of how much Children’s and Women’s Hospital means to them.”

Allen explains that the strength of character that helped Peavey excel in major league baseball has shaped his desire to support his community. His values are why he started his foundation in 2012. “Jake is the type of person who wants to bring people together and encourage all to overcome their circumstances,” Allen said. “His foundation is not something he does because he has to, it’s something that he wants to do; it’s who he is.”

    Dear Friends,

Thank you for your generous support of the University of South Alabama. As part of Upward & Onward: A Campaign for the University of South Alabama, your gifts are helping our university reach higher and go farther because our students, our patients, our neighbors, and our communities depend on USA. Your generosity combined with that of many others is powerful. Every gift to USA represents an opportunity: a student can take her first trip abroad, parents find the specialist who can treat their sick child, or a researcher can push a step farther toward understanding human impacts on Gulf Coast estuaries. We appreciate your partnership in creating so many possibilities through education, research, health care, economic development, athletics, the arts and humanities. Together, we will continue to aspire to know more and work to achieve more. Together, we will keep the University of South Alabama moving Upward & Onward. Thank you.

We are pace setters.Dr. Jennifer Scalici, a gynecologic oncologist at the Mitchell Cancer Institute, braved the rain with approximately 1,000 others at the 9th annual GO RUN. The annual 5K is held in September of each year during GYN Cancer Awareness Month.

“This event gives our patients a chance to get out here with their families and celebrate their journey. And we’re raising money for important research being conducted right here in Mobile.”

Ovarian cancer accounts for more deaths than any other cancer of the female reproductive system, an expected 14,240 in the U.S. this year. Dr. Scalici leads a research team at MCI, which is working to better understand ovarian cancer and test new compounds for its treatment.

We are inquisitive. As an undergraduate student, Sarah Harvey had the opportunity to work in a biomedical science research lab thanks to the Emma Spector Greenfield Fund for Undergraduate Research.

Harvey, who came to South in 2012 from Ocean Springs, MS on a Presidential Scholarship, knows firsthand the impact this opportunity has had on her future and what it will mean for other students.

“In addition to being able to conduct research, I was also able to perfect many lab techniques and gain a better understandingof professional etiquette in the lab. I believe this knowledge is invaluable to my future in this field.”
