HISTORY

Sarajevo was rst placed on the map of academic centres in this part of Europe in 1573, with the signing of the Waqfname (Book of Endowment) by Gazi Husrev-bey. Today, the Gazi Husrev-bey’s Library is, as an associate member, the oldest institution within the University of Sarajevo. Following the departure of the Ottoman administration and the arrival of Austro-Hungarian Empire, the Sharia Judicial Academy was founded in 1887, the National Museum in 1888, and the Catholic Seminary of the Vrhbosna Archbishopric in 1890.

On 2 December 1949, the University of Sarajevo was ofcially established with its member institutions. Until 1975, the University of Sarajevo was the only university in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the beacon of development of higher education and science in the country. Today, the University of Sarajevo is the leading university in Bosnia and Herzegovina and one of the top universities in the region.

DEGREE AND QUALIFICATIONS

The higher education system in Bosnia and Herzegovina is organized in three cycles as follows:

The first cycle of 180-240 ECTS (three or four years of full time study) to obtain the degree of bachelor; The second cycle of 60-120 ECTS (one or two years of full time study) leads to a master degree (total of 300 ECTS - with the first cycle); The third cycle of 180 ECTS (three years of full time study and/or research) to obtain a PhD degree.

An integrated programme of the rst and second cycle at schools of the medical group leads to the title of a doctor of medicine/dental medicine/veterinary medicine, and a master of pharmacy.

BOLOGNA EDUCATION SYSTEM

In September 2003, Bosnia and Herzegovina signed and accepted the European strategic goals in the eld of higher education, as expressed in the Declaration of the European Higher Education Ministers made in Bologna (1999), as well as the subsequent development of this concept. In 2000, the rst project by model 3+2 was implemented at the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. The rst ‘’Bologna’’ generation of the

stUniversity of Sarajevo (1 cycle) was enrolled in 2005, the

nd rd 2 cycle in 2008 and the 3 cycle in 2010. The transition to the Bologna process was completed in 2014.

TEACHING LANGUAGE

The majority of courses and study programmes are in Bosn i an /Croa t i an /Se rb i an (B /C/S ) and i t i s recommended that candidates have some level of knowledge of the host country's language before arrival. Bosnian/Croatian/ Serbian are languages with three different language standards and minor regional variations.

However, we do have complete study programmes in English (such as the programmes offered by the Faculty of Medicine, Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies, and the School of Economics and Business), or where certain courses can be provided in English (the Faculty of Political Sciences, and the Faculty of Philosophy). For other member institutions, special arrangements for students can be made (research, tutorials, laboratory work, exams and other forms of assessment).

SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH

Research at the University of Sarajevo is funded through international funds (mostly EU grants such as H2020, IPA, and COST Programme), national governmental

resources, as well as UNSA own funding. University of Sarajevo has extensive experience in participation in international research projects, represents a leading B&H’s institution in receiving national research grants, and also provides wide range of contract research in cooperation with the industry sector.

I n 2 0 1 8 U N S A h a s r e c e i v e d t h e “ H R Excellence in Research Award”. The award is granted by the European Commission to those research institutions that have made signicant progress in implementing the European Charter for Researchers and the Principle for the Employment of Researchers, which adhere to the documents and standards prescribed by the European Union in relation to the working conditions and employment of researchers, and whose recruitment procedures are harmonized with European. The European Commission recognized the efforts of the University of Sarajevo to provide better conditions for the work and employment of researchers at UNSA. The recognition is certainly signicant for UNSA, but it also represents a commitment because it implies the efforts and activities of all bodies and organizational units of the University of Sarajevo to implement measures from the Action Plan for the Implementation of the Human Resources Strategy for Researchers (HRS4R) of the University of Sarajevo.

STUDYING IN SARAJEVO

The University of Sarajevo is not a traditional campus university – most of its member institutions are spread across the city, which makes the whole city one campus.

Sarajevo has been the meeting point between East and West for hundreds of years. Many civilizations and empires have left their traces that can be found all over the city. In just a few hundred meters in Sarajevo, mosques, Catholic and Orthodox churches, and Jewish synagogues proudly stand side by side. Even after centuries, they still stand proud, welcoming travelers.

In Sarajevo, you can find stunning natural beauty and richness of this country, interesting historical monuments and tourist attractions you must visit. Find some time between classes to enjoy the beauties that the city of Sarajevo and the whole of Bosnia and Herzegovina have to offer.

EXCHANGE STUDENTS

An exchange student represents an individual who is ofcially registered at his/her home university or other higher education institution, but who temporarily lives in a foreign country and attends courses or is involved in other academic activities. The exchange period lasts a minimum of one semester (3-5 months) and a maximum of two semesters (10-12 months), depending on the organisation of classes at the host university. The exchange student does NOT receive a diploma from the host university. However, all academic results (such as transcript of records) are sent to the student’s home university .

This mobility increases the students’ linguistic and social skills as well as their maturity, condence and self-esteem. Having an international experience makes a positive impact on your future career and it’s mind-opening for a comprehensive career in increasingly global world.

DEGREE STUDENTS

Degree students are fully registered at the university abroad where they obtain their diplomas. Students applying to a foreign university need to comply with the local admission requirements. If you are interested in a degree study at UNSA, check:

Our university strongly promotes international mobility, focusing on the importance of a tolerant and democratic international environment for successful learning, scientic and artistic research, as well as personal development.

Mate Subašić,

University of Zagreb, CROATIALife in Sarajevo is really a unique experience. Old Ottoman heritage, together with an Austro-Hungarian and Yugoslav history creates truly different and interesting enviroment. Students make up most of the city’s population. Local students are willing to assist foreign students in all kinds of stuff, particularly the cultural and night life tips.

Marzia BonaUniversity of Bologna, ITALY

As an exchange student at the University of Sarajevo, I had the opportunity to attend stimulating lectures given by brilliant professors. Conferences and parallel events have further enriched the educational opportunity of studying at this University. The city is a priceless environment, offering lots of possibilities for the free time. At same time, its dimension makes it very accessible and enjoyable. Cultural initiatives and the great nature surrounding the city have made my stay in Sarajevo an enriching experience even outside the academy.

Katarzyna KozdraUniversity of Warsaw, POLAND

I chose Sarajevo because I knew this is the best university in the region. I had a wonderful time, especially because I got to meet many interesting people, mainly colleagues from the university’s International Relations Office. I visited many places not only in Sarajevo, but in other parts of Bosnia and Herzegovina, too. Upon my return home, I have been constantly recommending Sarajevo and its university as the best place for mobility and exchange, not only for students, but also for staff due to the many activities they organize.

TRAVELCheck with your home university about travel arrangements and procedures you need to take and notify host university about your arrival and departure dates. Please note: keep all the tickets you receive – receipts, boarding passes, bus, train, ship tickets since they will serve as a proof of your mobility here.

PASSPORTAlthough many citizens can travel with their ID, it is important that during your mobility in Sarajevo (Bosnia and Herzegovina) you have (and use dur ing entrance/exit) valid passport. Your passport is an essential document document for regulating residence permit.

VISA AND RESIDENCE PERMITPlease contact the B&H Consulate or Embassy in your country of residence regarding visa arrangements. Please note: citizens of the European Union do not require visa to enter Bosnia and Herzegovina. However, RESIDENCE PERMIT is required and it must be regulated upon your arrival to Sarajevo. Instructions are given at the: http://www.erasmus-unsa.ba/residence-permit/. IMPORTANT NOTE: in order to regulate your residence permit you must bring the following documents:- passport and - document that states your non-criminal record. This document must be issued by an institution in charge of such matters from the state of your residence, issued within six (6) months from the expected time of arrival to Bosnia and Herzegovina. ADDITIONAL NOTE: it must be issued by the state ministry or similar official institution at the state level – a document issued by a regional, county or municipial institution is not accepted. Staff members who are EU citizens arriving for a mobility of several days or a maximum of two months do not require a visa or residence permit.

ENROLLEMENT AND REGISTRATIONAlthough you have been admitted through a scholarship mobility program, you still need to enroll before classes start. Enrollment is necessary in order to have free access to courses, exams, and follow-up documents. During your nomination and application procedures you have submitted all the necessary application documents, but upon arrival in Sarajevo, you must officially register at the faculty/academy that is your host institution. In order to do that, please purchase the enrollment documents called "indeks" ("index", a grade and student ID booklet) and registration forms (available at the UNSA Rectorate, top floor) for 30 BAM/15 . Kindly fill in the documents and submit them to the Student Services of your host institution (your assigned buddy can help you with these steps). The index is a small, dark-blue handbook in which all your course attendance is verified and final grades are entered by your instructor. All students have one since the index is a proof of your enrolment and is crucial for issuing a transcript of record upon completion of courses. Along with enrolment papers as explained above, you also need to have a birth certificate from your home country.

BIRTH CERTIFICATEOnce incoming students arrive in Sarajevo and before classes start, they need to enroll and register. One of the documents required for registration is your birth certificate so make sure that you obtain one before departing to Sarajevo and to bring it with you.

STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIESThanks to the Tempus and Erasmus+ projects, UNSA has opened the Student Support Office, assisting also students with disabilities. This Office provides inclusive education support. Incoming applications by students with disabilities are directed to the Student Support Office, but we try to help in resolving such applications also in an individual manner, establishing communication between students, the home university and host faculty member(s) in order to check the feasibility of such mobility. Before applying to our university, please inform us if you are a student with disabilities requiring specific arrangements or services.

INSURANCEMake sure to have insurance during your mobility in Sarajevo (UNSA does not provide insurance for foreign students and staff). This means that if your insurance is not included in your scholarship, you will have to obtain it yourself. Kindly check what your insurance plan is regarding health and life insurance while in Sarajevo. You will be expected to have a confirmation of your insurance policy for your residence permit application.

JOIN OUR SOCIAL GROUPTo be better informed, please join our Facebook group UNSA INCOMING, where we have ESN members, former EU and UNSA students who can help you with accommodation recommendations, information about cost of living and other practical details useful prior to your arrival to Sarajevo. You will do this in the International Relations Office at the Rectorate, unless you receive different instructions in our welcome email. The certificate of departure must be signed before you depart Sarajevo.
