#7 LOGGERS SWEEP SEASON OPENERS

FOREST GROVE, Ore. - Playing the first two matches of the 2008 season, the seventh-ranked Puget Sound Loggers showed that they are worth the hype, sweeping past both UC Santa Cruz and #25 Christopher Newport at the Boxer Kickoff Vol-leyball Invitational on Saturday afternoon in Forest Grove, Ore.

In the first match of the season, Puget Sound dominated the first set, posting a .385 attack percentage before settling down to .184 in set two and .171 in set three. Brynn Blickenstaff (Eagle, Idaho) had a strong first match of her collegiate career, coming off the bench to lead Puget Sound with 10 kills. Kelsie Telge (Kenmore, Wash./Inglemoor) had 16 digs and senior Jamie Fred (Centennial, Colo./Grandview) put up 25 assists as the Loggers took their first match of the season, 25-12, 25-21, 25-21.

In the second match of the day, the Loggers came out strong once again, hitting .250 in the first set to take the first set by a score of 25-21. Much like the first match, the Loggers settled down again in sets two and three but so did the Captains as the Loggers won the final two sets by identical scores of 25-19. Junior Lindsay Denman (Kenmore, Wash./Inglemoor) led the team with 11 kills and just three errors for a .286 clip. Freshman Sophie DeWitt (Astoria, Ore.) had eight kills with no errors for a .615 hitting percentage while Fred added 37 more assists to her season totals.

VOLLEYBALL SPLITS ON FINAL DAY OF BOXER KICKOFF

FOREST GROVE, Ore. - On the final day of the Boxer Kickoff in Forest Grove, Ore, the seventh-ranked Puget Sound Log-gers split their final matches. In the first match, the Loggers defeated Neumann (25-17, 25-16, 21-25, 25-16) but in their final match the Loggers fell for the first time in 2008 to Cal State East Bay (14-25, 25-20, 14-25, 21-25).

In the first match of the day, the Loggers (3-1) breezed to a two-set lead with quick 25-17 and 25-16 victories over Neu-mann. In the third frame, UPS made a number of unforced errors to drop their first set of the 2008 season but Puget Sound quickly recovered to take the fourth set and the match, 3-1. Lindsey Denman (Kenmore, Wash./Inglemoor) led the way with 21 kills while freshman Brynn Blickenstaff (Eagle, Idaho) added 12 kills in the third match of her collegiate career. Senior Jamee Fred (Centennial, Colo./Grandview) put up 29 assists in the victory.

In their final match of the weekend, the Loggers faced off against 12th-ranked Cal State East Bay and the Pioneers controlled the match from the very beginning hitting .300 in the first set to take an early lead. The Loggers evened things up in the second set with a 25-20 win but the Pioneers just couldn’t make a mistake in the final two sets, hitting .303 and .424 in sets three and four respectively, to take the 3-1 victory. Denman again led the Loggers in kills with 13, the only UPS player in double-digit kills.

#7 LOGGERS TAKE TWO ON DAY ONE OF UPS PREMIER

TACOMA, Wash. - Taking on some of the best teams the west coast has to offer, the seventh-ranked Puget Sound Loggers made the most of their two matches on Friday, defeating Redlands and #12 Cal State East Bay, on day one of the Puget Sound Premier volleyball tournament at Memorial Fieldhouse in Tacoma, Wash.

In the first match of the day, the Loggers (5-1) got off to a quick start, hitting .289 en route to a 25-21 set one win. The Bull-dogs stole one away in the second set but Puget Sound answered back with two more strong sets to take the 3-1 win. Junior Lindsey Denman (Kenmore, Wash./Inglemoor) led the way with 17 kills while Juliette Witous (Sonoma, Calif) was a vacuum in the back row, putting up 34 digs. Senior Jamee Fred (Centennial, Colo./Grandview) put up 44 assists in the four-set victory while Kalli Kamphaus (Manson, Wash.) and Brynn Blickenstaff (Eagle, Idaho) finished with 14 and 12 kills respectively.

Taking the court with revenge their minds following a four-set loss on Sunday, the Loggers came out strong in their second match of the day. The Loggers hit .261 in the first set to take the 25-20 win and only got better, hitting .278 in the second set and .292 in the third set. Cal State East Bay did the opposite, going for .200 in set one to .158 in set two and -.038 in the final set. Blickenstaff led the way in the match with 12 kills. LOGGERS DROP TWO ON FINAL DAY OF UPS PREMIER

TACOMA, Wash. - Facing the two teams immediately above them in the national rankings, the seventh-ranked Puget Sound Loggers just couldn’t find a way to pull off the upsets, falling to #6 Trinity (Texas) and #5 La Verne on the final day of the Puget Sound Premier volleyball tournament on Saturday at Memorial Fieldhouse in Tacoma, Wash.

Facing off against Trinity, the Loggers dropped a tough set, 26-24, in the first frame but bounced back to collect the 25-23 win in the second set. The Tigers continued to improve in the third and fourth sets to collect the four-set win. Brynn Blickenstaff (Eagle, Idaho) led the Loggers with 14 kills and Kalli Kamphaus (Manson, Wash.) added 12 but it wasn’t enough to stop the sixth-ranked Tigers. Trinity was led by 14 kills from Ay Mittelstaedt and 40 assists from Caroline Keener.

After an unreal first set that saw the Loggers hit .500 and limit the fifth-ranked Leopards to just 11 points, La Verne played like the team that everyone knew they were, winning three straight sets to collect the victory and finish 4-0 in the tourna-ment. Kamphaus led the Loggers with 13 kills while junior Lindsey Denman (Kenmore, Wash./Inglemoor) added 12 kills in the loss. La Veren was led by 16 kills from Crista Jones and 15 from Brianna Gonzales. Yesenia Lopez finished with 46 kills on the match.

#9 LOGGERS SWEEP PAST BOXERS, 3-0

TACOMA, Wash. - Playing their first match in nearly two weeks, the ninth-ranked Puget Sound Loggers made quick work of the Pacific Boxers, winning in three straight sets, 25-18, 25-23, 25-15, in a Northwest Conference volleyball match on Friday night at Stadium High School in Tacoma, Wash.

In the first set, the Loggers (6-3, 1-0) took the lead from the very beginning and never gave it up, hitting .256 compared with just .091 for the Boxers as UPS took the early lead in the match. The set was close midway through, with Puget Sound hold-ing just an 11-10 advantage at one point but the Loggers turned on the power and earned the 25-18 win.

In the second set, both teams battled with a number of long rallies. With each team over 50 attacks for the set, the Loggers were able to recover from nine attack errors to slip past Pacific, 25-23, heading into the break. The Boxers again struggled as well offensively, committing seven attack errors and hitting just .035 for the set.

In the third and final set, the Boxers took a brief lead early but the Loggers began to pull away and they clinch their NWC opener with a 25-15 win in set three. The Loggers had their best hitting set of the match, collecting 13 kills and four attack errors on 30 attempts for a .300 clip. The Boxers again continued to slide, hitting an even .000 in the final set.

The Loggers were led by 12 kills each from Lindsey Denman (Kenmore, Wash./Inglemoor) and Brynn Blickenstaff (Eagle, Idaho). Senior Jamee Fred (Centennial, Colo./Grandview) put up 41 assists for the Loggers while Juliette Witous (Sonoma, Calif.) led the team with 16 digs.

The Boxers were led by 10 kills from Kelsey Takashima. Me-lissa Dunn collected a match-high 17 digs in the loss.

#10 LOGGERS CALM BEARCATS

SALEM, Ore. - Strong defense and a consistent offense helped the 10th-ranked Puget Sound Loggers sweep past the host Willamette Bearcats, 25-15, 25-18, 25-22, in a Northwest Conference volleyball match on Friday night at Cone Field House in Salem, Ore.

In the first set, the Loggers (9-3, 4-0 NWC) battled with the Bearcats for the opening points but with UPS holding an 8-6 lead, the Loggers scored 11 straight points to take a 19-6 lead. Willamette went on a five-run of their own but it was too little, too late as UPS took the first set, 25-15.

In the second set, the Logger continued to pile it on, taking advantage of poor Willamette attacks and a strong team-oriented defense. Using a number of four-point runs, the Logger again pulled ahead, holding a 20-11 lead at one point. After a late Bearcat push, the Loggers continued to capitalize on Willamette mistakes to take set two, 25-18.

In the third set, it looked like the Bearcats might steal a set but after being down 22-16, the Loggers scored nine straight points to not only come from behind to take the set but to clinch the match in three straight sets. The sweep was the fourth straight for the Loggers, who have yet to lose a set in NWC play.

The Loggers were led by eight kills from junior Lindsey Den-man (Kenmore, Wash./Inglemoor), who was eight-for-14 with no attack errors for a .571 clip. Senior setter Jamee Fred (Centennial, Colo./Grandview) had 16 assists while junior setter Stephanie Harvey (Yakima, Wash./Eisenhower) added 11 in the win. Freshman libero Juliette Witous (Sonoma, Ca-lif.) had a team-high 11 digs.

Willamette was led by eight kills from Jessica Durham, who also had 12 attack errors on the match. Clare Chedester had 11 assists in the loss while Durham added 15 digs for the ‘Cats.

#9 LOGGERS UPSET IN SPOKANE

SPOKANE, Wash. - After four straight sweeps to open Northwest Conference play, the ninth-ranked Puget Sound Loggers fell victim to the Whitworth Pirates in four sets, 25-18, 13-25, 25-19, 25-16, in a NWC volleyball match on Friday night at Whitworth Fieldhouse in Spokane, Wash.

In the first set, Whitworth came out strong, hitting .263 with just three attack errors to force the Loggers (9-4, 4-1 NWC) to play from behind. Freshman Brynn Blickenstaff (Eagle, Idaho) kept the Loggers in the set, putting down five kills with no errors on seven attempts for a .714 hitting percentage.

In the second set, the Loggers were able to take advantage of hot hitting on their side of the net, 12 kills and four errors on 32 attempts for a .250 clip, and ice-cold hitting for the Pirates, eight kills and nine errors on 37 attacks for a -.027 hitting percentage. Freshman Erika Greene (Draper, Utah/Juan Diego) stepped up big for the Loggers in the easy set win, collecting five kills and just one error on seven attacks for a .571 hitting percentage.

Following the break, the Loggers hard a hard time warming up again as they fell behind early and 11 attack errors doomed them in a 25-19 set loss. Stephanie Harvey (Yakima, Wash./Eisenhower) was a bright spot at setter, putting up nine assists on 11 kills as the Loggers had a .000 hitting percentage in the frame.

The fourth and final set was unfortunately more of the same for the Loggers as Whitworth came out strong, leaving UPS with too much ground to cover in a comeback attempt. Down 10-3 at one point, Puget Sound was able to fight back to within five at 18-13 but they never got any closer as the Bucs took the clinching set, 25-16.

The Loggers were led by 10 kills from Greene. Junior Lindsey Denman (Kenmore, Wash./Inglemoor) added nine kills while Blickenstaff ended the match with seven kills to her name. Harvey finished with 20 assists on the night while starting setter Jamee Fred (Centennial, Colo./Grandview) added 17 assists for the Loggers.

Whitworth was led by 14 kills from Kaimi Rocha and nine from Nikki Bardwell. Ka’ipo Rocha added eight kills while Holly Tomlin finished with seven. Bree Riddle assisted on 23 kills while Bethany Castilleja led all players with 23 digs on the night.

#10 LOGGERS SLAM PAST WHITMAN, 3-0

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - One night after dropping their first conference match of the year, the ninth-ranked Puget Sound Loggers took out their frustrations on the host Whitman Missionaries in three straight sets, 25-15, 25-14, 25-15, in a North-west Conference volleyball match on Saturday evening at the Sherwood Center in Walla Walla.

The Loggers (10-4, 5-1 NWC) were held close at the beginning of the first set but with the score at 9-6, the Loggers quickly pushed the lead to 23-10. With 15 kills and just five errors on 33 attacks for a clip of .303, the Loggers also kept Whitman cold, as the Missionaries hit -.033 in the first set as the Loggers took the 25-15 set one win.

If the Loggers were hot hitters in the first set, the Walla Walla Fire Department must have been called in the second set as the Loggers again put up 15 kills with just one attack error on 25 attacks for an incredible .560 hitting percentage heading into the break. Whitman improved a bit themselves, hitting .154, but not before the Loggers took the second set, 25-14.

The Loggers cooled down slightly in the third set but not too much as they used 14 kills with four errors on 30 attacks to hold back Whitman, who hit an even .000 with nine kills and nine errors in the set.

The Loggers were led by 14 kills without an error by junior Lindsey Denman (Kenmore, Wash./Inglemoor). Freshman phenom Brynn Blickenstaff (Eagle, Idaho) added 12 kills with just one error on 16 attacks for a .688 hitting percentage. Senior setter Jamee Fred (Centennial, Colo./Grandview) had 39 assists on they day while Erika Green (Draper, Utah/Juan Diego) led the Loggers with nine digs on the night.

Whitman was led by seven kills each from Katie Miller and Alex Graves. Katie Richards added 12 assists and Kelsie Butts chipped in 12 digs.

FOREST GROVE, Ore. - In a three-way tie for first place in the Northwest Conference, the 16th-ranked Puget Sound Log-gers kicked off the second half of NWC play with a four-set victory over the Pacific Boxers, 25-16, 23-25, 25-15, 25-19, on Friday night in Forest Grove, Ore.

TACOMA, Wash. - In a battle of regionally-ranked, nationally-ranked and just plain rival schools, the #15 Puget Sound Log-gers fell to the #19 Pacific Lutheran Lutes in five sets, 25-27, 23-25, 25-21, 25-23, 15-10, on Wednesday night at Stadium High School in Tacoma, Wash.

MASSEY WINS #500 AS #15 LOGGERS BEAT BEARCATS, 3-1

TACOMA, Wash. - In 33 years coaching women’s volleyball, including 29 as a head coach, Mark Massey has seen a lot of volleyball matches. He has also won a lot of volleyball matches and on Friday night, Massey eclipsed 500 career wins as the Puget Sound Loggers defeated the Willamette Bearcats, 25-17, 21-25, 25-20, 25-14, in a Northwest Conference match at Stadium High School in Tacoma, Wash.

The 15th-ranked Loggers methodically worked their way to a lead, holding a 15-6 advantage midway through the set before eventually taking a 1-0 match lead with a 25-17 set win. UPS hit .297 in the opening period on 16 kills and five attack errors while the Bearcats were held to a .033 hitting percentage.

In the second set, the Bearcats played a fantastic frame, throwing down 16 kills and committing just three attack errors on 32 attempts for a .406 hitting percentage. The Loggers were strong as well, putting down 12 kills and just one error on 27 attempts for a .407 clip but the Bearcats edged out the set victory, 25-21.

The Loggers got back to business in the third set, using a run of eight straight points early in the match to build a 12-4 lead. The eight-point advantage allowed the Loggers to withstand a late Willamette run to take the third set, 25-20.

In the final set, the Bearcats seemed to just run out of juice as the Loggers were able to put down 13 kills with just three errors on 31 attacks while the Bearcats had eight attack errors and just seven kills for a -.029 hitting percentage.

The Loggers were led by 12 kills each from Lindsey Denman (Ken-more, Wash./Inglemoor) and Kalli Kamphaus (Manson, Wash.). Se-nior Jamee Fred (Centennial, Colo./Grandview) put up 28 assists while junior Stephanie Harvey (Yakima, Wash./Eisenhower) added 19 assists in the win.

Willamette was led by a match-high 20 kills from southpaw Jessica McGraw. Jessica Durham added 14 kills while Clare Chedester put up 39 assists in the losing effort.

The announcement that Massey reached 500 came as a surprise to the Loggers head coach. His head coaching career began at Syra-cuse University in 1980, where he won 55 matches in three sea-sons. From there, he became head coach at Northeastern Univer-sity in 1984, winning 96 matches over six seasons for the Huskies. In 1989, he moved out west and became head coach at Cal State LA, where he coached the Golden Eagles for seven seasons, winning 120 matches and earning himself a spot in the CSULA Athletic Hall of Fame in 2003. Massey joined the Loggers for the 1996 season and Friday’s victory brought his record at Puget Sound to 229-104.
