Henry B. Bass Collection Inventory of Lincoln Poetry

Location: Locked File, Manuscripts Division There are two volumes of Lincoln poetry. Volume 1 is labeled Lincoln Autograph, Volume 2, Lincoln Broadsides. Included with the poetry are letters, speeches, and essays about Lincoln. Many were signed, some were published, others were written to be sung or spoken, and a few were a combination of these. The earliest poem inventoried was “God Save Our President,” originally written in 1857 and set to music by George Felix Benkert in 1858. It was played by the Marine Band at the first and second inaugurations of Presidents Lincoln and Grant and at the inauguration of President Hayes. The Lincoln material contains a history of this poem and a handwritten copy made by the author in 1878. The author’s signature is illegible. Collection dates: February 11, 1861 to February 9, 1949.
