ABouT THE ARTIST ...

Dr. Karl Haas, in his radio broadcasts ofAdventures in Good Music, is heard by

millions of music lovers throughout the world. His daJy broadcasts from his New

York City studio have continued for an uninterrupted run of 37 years. The pro

gram's networl~ comprises more than 200 cities in the U.S., more than 400 sta

tions of the American Armed Forces Network (AFN), 30 stations of the

Australian Broadcasting Corporation, and a number of stations in Europe and

Canada as well as Mexico City.

Renowned pianist-conductor and a student of the legendary Artur Schnabel,

Dr. Karl Haas conceives, plans and hosts his show without ever using a script,

delving into his life-long experience and knowledge of music, a true and lasting

"love affair", as he readJy admits. His choice of subjects is as wide as the reper

toire of music history. From the historical to the biographical, from the analytical

to the humorous, he has the world of music at his fingertips.

Dr. Karl Haas has twice been awarded the coveted George Foster Peabody Award and,

in 1991, received the National Endowment for the Humanities' prestigious Charles

Frankel Award. According to The Chicago Tribune, "Haas has emerged as the world's

leading point man for serious music." The fall of 1996 marked his 37th series (bi

annual) of live Adventures in Good Music at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in

New York City, a series which is sold out by subscription, with standing room only.

Since 1995, Dr. Haas has been engaged to perform in a series entitled Music & Humanism at the Smithsonian Institutions of Washington, D.C.

CDs and cassettes, personally autographed by Dr. Haas, will be avaJable for

sale in the lobby before and after the concert, and during intermission. Three Karl

Haas albums are avaJable: The Story o/ the Bells, The Romantic Piano, and Song

and Dance. CDs are $18 each, and cassettes are $12 each. All proceeds from

these sales as well as from tonight's ticket sales go to the Classical Music

Scholarship Fund. We appreciate your support which enables talented but needy

music students to get an outstanding college education.

Hornblowers: Blowing stronger than ever ... Now in its fifth year, the Hornblowers Club is the brainchild of Larry Buchanan, immediate past chairman of the J.A.M.S. Board, the volunteer jazz board at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville.

Its objective is to increase awareness of the UNF Jazz Studies Program and to raise money for UNF scholarship fund. J.A.M.S. is an acronym for Jazz and American Music Supporters. The group numbers about 20 members and meets the first Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m. on the UNF Campus. Current members of the Horn blowers Club are as follows:

• Ron Katz, owner of Mobile Gas and St. Augustine Gas, has been a supporter of the UNF Jazz Program since the early '80s. His companies provide quality propane gas service and appliances for industrial, residential and commercial applications from Georgia to Palm Coast, Florida.

• Caral Edelberg founded Medical Management Resources in 1986 and is President and CEO of this company which provides expert services in emergency medicine, reimbursement consulting, coding and data management.

• Butensky & Cohen Financial Security, Inc., is a registered investment advisor, managing financial assets for

Jazz Program and a member of the J.A.M.S. Board.

The new health system includes six hospitals, a nursing home, home health services, primary care centers located throughout the region, and many specialized services for individuals' and families' health needs.

• Pellegrino Porraro retired

recently as Executive Vice President of Prudential Insurance Corporation of America. He has been attending UNF jazz concerts since 1991. He is especially interested in fostering the musical education for young people.

• Our newest Hornblowers are Jacqueline and Rogers Holmes. Rogers Holmes, Chairman of Holmes Lumber Company, is also known for his many other interests such as being a champion master swimmer and the working owner of a scuppernog grape vineyard. Jacqueline Holmes serves as a fine arts advisor and is active in Jacksonville's art community.

• Jacque Mullikin and her mother, Gertrude Cronin, have made a donation in memory of the late Fred Mullikin. Mullikin was a longstanding member of the Jazz Board and an enthusiastic supporter of the UNF Jazz Program. Jacque Mullikin is currently co-chairing the J.A.M.S. Board.

Individuals or corporations become a member of the Hornblowers Club by making a donation to the jazz scholarship fund. Persons interested in becoming a member of the J.A.M.S. Board or a Hornblower should call Jacque Mullikin at 285-1643 or ShirleyTschannen at 246-3585.
