SLO1: Our students will be able to integrate discipline-specific knowledge across functional areas and utilize leadership and team skills to accomplish group tasks.

UNCW Strategic Goal 1UNCW Learning Goals – foundational knowledge

a. Content Knowledge100 question multiple choice assessment representing five key areas each for 13 business core classes with three possible repetitions. Also included other SLO’s.

Required for all students registered in MGT 455 class (capstone strategy course required for all BSBA students). Administered every semester on-line. All stduetns must achieve a 60% or above to sustain their preference for pre-registration sections of MGT455. Only the first assessment is used for content review.

Each department reviews its set of questions relevant to its business core class for student learning improvement and makes changes to their core classes as needed.

Appendix A.1 Based on AACSB recommendation, the CSB implemented the on-line assessment for all students seeking to pre-register for MGT 455. Prior to implementation all courses reviewed content knowledge questions. Instrument was changed from 60 questions to 100 questions.

The average first responses for Fall 2012 was 68.6% amd s[ring 2013 dipped to 60%. All but a few courses dropped significantly. Prior to this the trend above 60% was high and consideration to increase the mean was going to be considered. With spring 2013 showing significant drops, time must be give to determine if this was just an anomaly or a new trend that must be remedied.

c. Team BuildingMethod: Rubric used in MGT 455 course by students that assess each team member in their project team groups

Every semester MGT 455 is offered including summer for all students in course. Management faculty review data for improvements. Assessment rubrics are used against comprehensive term project.

Every semester in MGT 455 class (capstone strategy course). Management faculty review data for improvements.

Appendix A.2

Appendix A.3

In February 2012 the first CSB assessment day was conducted. Faculty working in teams used assessment data to make recommendations. Recommendations now before the curriculum committee to improve integration are 1) faculty to develop common expectations for integration. Develop website to provide the material. 2) Assess and reduce the number of overridesFor pre-requisites for MGT 455.

In February 2012 the first CSB assessment day was conducted. Faculty working in teams used assessment data to make recommendations. As a result additional teamwork training was added to the new BUS205 and BUS305 (see Appendix XX)course to improve SLO.

Appendix A.4In February 2012 the first CSB assessment day was conducted. Faculty working in teams used assessment data to make recommendations. As a result additional leadership training was added to the new BUS205 and BUS405 course to improve SLO. Activities in BUS305 can now lead to a leadership certificate earned from Student Affairs.

SLO2: Our students will demonstrate critical thinking and problem solving skills through problem identification, analysis and synthesis of data, evaluation of alternatives, and defense of a solution.

UNCW Goal 1

a. Problem SolvingMethod: At the end of the semester in the Production Management course (POM 370), a non-graded problem is added to assess problem solving. Using a problem solving rubric, a faculty member who does not teach the course, assesses the ability to problem solve for each student.

b. Critical ThinkingMethod: At the end of the semester in the Production Management course (POM 370), a non-graded problem

Assessment is conducted every semester POM 370 is taught from a sample of student work. The AOL committee reviews the work and passes it to the curriculum committee as needed.

All problem solving factors are scoring on an average of 86% except using of information. With the new University Studies requirement for the use of information literacy, this course should be added to both University Stdueis and improved on this factor within the course. The AOL committee will address this in spring 2013.

Low scores continue in “evaluating evidence” (around 58% range). Improvement through case training in BUS305 will be considered and provided again in

SLO3: Our students will be able to conceptualize a complex issue into a coherent written statement and oral presentation, demonstrated with the effective use of technology.UNCW Goal 1

a. Written CommunicationMethod: Due to an internal analysis the CSB dropped the use of EBI’s writing assessment and inbedded rubrics in the BUS205 and BUS305 classes.

b. Oral Communication/ Technology UseMethod: All faculty in the MGT 455 CSB capstone course (strategy course) use a rubric (encompassing components of oral communication and the use

Identified writing activities were inbedded into the BUS205 and BUS305 courses with associated rubrics. In addition the only required text for these two course is the “business Writer’s Handbook”.

This assessment is conducted every semester in MGT 455 by all faculty teaching the class. The management faculty review the data for recommended actions.

Appendix C.1Appendix C.2Appendix C.3

Early data suggests that there is a large gap in student ability to write.

Must add Jack’s data here)

Although early, a proposal is being considered byt the curriculum committee to require those stduents earning consistent scores of 2 or less be required to take an additional course in Business Writing trhough the UNCW English Departmetn. This discussion and faculty input will occur in spring 2013.

Based on the data and the assessment day recommendations it is recommended a minimum of one presentation for each concentration in a 300 level course and one presentation in BUS205 be conducted. However after review the shear numbers in

SLO4: Our students will understand the importance of social responsibility, diversity, ethics and legal issues.UNCW Goal 3

a. Ethics, Social Responsibility, and Diversity

a. Legal IssuesMethod: This assessment is conducted by utilizing questions directly related to the legal environment (BLA 361) from the content knowledge assessment conducted for students pre-

Insufficient data was being gathered on the dimensions of ethics, social responsibility, and diversity. This assessment is now included in the content knowledge of SLO1. The assessment instrument was changed to include more extensive assessment of these qualities and is being included in the 60% requirement for pre-registration in MGT 455.

Ten hours of volunteer work have been added to the BUS305 course for social responsibility focused on diverse populations. A peer reflection paper is required for these activities. This is the first semester the course is bing offered so no information has beed gained as yet. There is a great deal of fluctuation in the BLA361 content questions. Faculty teaching in this area are reviewing the data for course changes or question continuity. This can be accomplished now that

three sets of data are complete.

SLO5: Our students will demonstrate an understanding of global business practices that embraces the opportunities of multicultural, diverse environments, as they relate to local, national and global operations.UNCW Goal 4

Method: This assessment is conducted by utilizing questions directly related to international business (INB 300 course) from the content knowledge assessment conducted for students pre-registering in MGT 455.

This assessment is now imbedded in the online requirement for all students wishing to pre-register for MGT 455 every semester and is evaluated by the international business committee

Appendix E.l INB300 is being taught by both fulltime and partime faculty. The average score on the assessment content questions has remained around 62%, however one question averages 3%. Upon review of these questions there is most likely an incorrect answer inbedded in the assessment which will need to be changed. The IB committee will review the data this spring as a part of the required concentrationreview that is to be completed this year.
