ABSTRACT (250 words or less):

The aim of this proposal is to enhance the undergraduate experience in alignment with the hands-on

culture of UL’s Engineering program. Material testing systems are necessary components for applying

the theory of mechanics of materials, but until now, have been too complicated and expensive to

completely cover in a single semester for undergraduate students. Recently, companies have begun to

offer affordable testing machines which cater to the needs of undergraduate students, providing

simplicity and safety, both for the student and machine. This technology, although common amongst

graduate students, will benefit over 800 students per year in several departments within the College of

Engineering including Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Industrial

Technology, and Petroleum Engineering. Furthermore, the machines can be useful for other departments

in the university such as Physics and Geology as well as university hosted summer programs for high

school students like the Gear-Up program.

A. Purpose of Grant

The purpose of this grant is to enhance the college of engineering undergraduate students experience in

materials testing by using the latest advanced technology developed mainly for undergraduate students.

Proper design of engineering materials, structures, and machinery, requires appropriate knowledge of

material properties and behavior. Instruction of the methods and standards for determining material

strengths and failure modes is best done through hands-on experimentation followed by data analysis.

Typically, undergraduate students in engineering across the U.S., including UL College of Engineering,

have limited experience in testing performed by materials testing machines due to their complex opera-

tion and student’s safety concerns. These machine are traditionally used by graduate students, faculty,

and/or staff. Additionally, the large footprint of traditional materials testing machines prevents the use of

multiple machines for multiple groups of students simultaneously in the same laboratory.

Recent advances in materials testing systems technology have enabled the creation of safe, low-cost, and

simple operable machines specifically designed for use in undergraduate classes. Instruction using such

testing machines will enhance the student experience across the entire College of Engineering by provid-

ing undergraduate students active participation in the fundamental engineering process of materials test-

ing. Implementation of testing with current courses that only offer data analysis, without testing, would

take little to no time and would allow for similar classes to become available within other departments in

the college that have less hands-on opportunities for undergraduate students. Furthermore, the machines

can be useful for other departments in the university such as Physics and Geology as well as university

hosted summer programs for high school students like the Gear-Up program.

The goal of this proposal is to acquire three 210 Series 5kN Universal Test Machines by TestResources,

Inc. These machines provide methods for tensile, compressive, shear, and three-point bending testing.

The machines are outfitted with 1125 lb load cells to measure applied force as well as an extensome-

ter/deflectometer, used to measure strain. Data acquisition and operation are simple and accurate with

the state of the art software and hardware capabilities included with the machines. With this technology,

stress and strain diagrams can be developed and material properties such as ultimate tensile strength,

modulus of elasticity, fracture strength, and percent elongation can be measured for a multitude of mate-

rials with one simple machine.

The acquisition of these machines will provide the undergraduate students in engineering with the need-

ed hand-on experience and align UL along with several top higher education institutions who have al-

ready successfully implemented this technology with TestResources including the University of Michi-

gan, Purdue University, Duke University, Ohio State University, Wayne State University, and Georgia

Tech University.

Impact on Student Body This initiative will impact students in the following ways:

1. Advancement of course offerings currently using either one traditional MTS machine for

demonstration only or no experimental MTS testing

2. Enhancement of student experience allowing for hands-on training of engineering testing

methods and standards

3. Experience in experimental procedures and data analysis useful to students in future em-

ployment endeavors

4. Multidisciplinary use across the college of engineering

5. See course impact list in table below.
