    Department of

    BiotechnologyIntroduction

The department was established in 1996 with an

objective of imparting quality education in themultidisciplinary field of Biotechnology at bothundergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Biotechnology is defined as the application ofbiological systems to basic and technical and industrialprocesses. These processes are based on the use ofsome form of biological catalyst in the conversion of asubstrate to a desired product. These biologicalcatalysts are simple as enzymes or highly complexmicroorganisms or eukaryotic cells.

Biotechnology includes a wide range of activities. Each activity is associated with its own startingmaterial (bacterial, fungal, yeast, plant or animal cellsor enzymes), technical manipulation (cell fusion, cellor enzyme immobilization, genetic engineering, etc.),processes (continuous and batch fermentation), andscale (small to very large), which are unique to thatactivity.

Career OpportunitiesBiotechnology can be viewed as a group of useful, enabling technologies with wide and diverse

applications. It has large, highly profitable, modernindustrial outlets of great value to society e.g.. DNArecombinant technology, most revolutionary branchof the modern science and have a profound impact onmedicine, contributing to the diagnostics and cure ofhereditary detects and serious disease and thedevelopment of new biopharmaceutical drugs andvaccines for human and animal use. It also deals withthe modification of microorganisms, plants and farmanimals for improved and tailored food productionand to increased opportunities for environmentalremediation and protection.

The field is further exemplified with the industrialproduction of enzymes like proteases, amylases, celluloses and lipases, industrial manufacturing plantsfor milk and milk products, alcohols, organic acids, antibiotics, vitamins, growth promoting factors andmonoclonal antibodies.

The department offers over 70 different courses of studiesat the undergraduate and post graduate levels to cater to thehuman resource requirements for teaching and research inthe fields of education, agriculture, environmental NGO's,pharmaceutical and other industries. In the first and secondyear the students begin by taking Botany as a major subjecttogether with two subsidiary subjects in other departmentsof the University. Starting with the diversity of plant life,an outline of the classification of plants, their identification, structure and function, it continues with genetic basis ofvariation and evolution of plants. In the 3rd and 4th years, instead of subsidiary subjects, theyare required to study major subjects within the field ofBotany. In M.Sc. Final, the students specialize in oneof the branches of Botany, which include: AppliedBotany, Mycology & Plant Pathology, PlantPhysiology, Plant Ecology, Phycology & MarineBotany and Plant Taxonomy.

Career OpportunitiesSpecialization in different branches of plant sciences offeredby the department is helpful in getting jobs in agriculturebased organizations, teaching in various colleges anduniversities and in environmental NGOs like WWF andIUCN

    Department of

ChemistryIntroductionChemistry is a noble central science which helps to understandthe origin of life and suggest ways to use non-living things forgiving comfort to life. To train the young generation and to directtheir approach to accomplish this task easily, it is necessary tomake the students understand the principles underlying thecomposition, structure and properties of substances along with thetransformation that they undergo. It is therefore obvious thatchemical orientation cannot be imparted in isolation and his to bedeveloped through a cocktail of physics and biology on one handand engineering and applied sciences on the other. TheDepartment of Chemistry, University of Karachi is well equippedfor pursuing this goal having skilled and proficient faculty, wellequipped laboratories and other infrastructure.

The Department of Chemistry is one of the oldest departments ofUniversity of Karachi. When the university was shifted to itspresent location, the department occupied one of the few newlyconstructed buildingsand isstill housed there for the last 58 years.
