“after university, although it was fantastic to work for theVolkswagen group in a team of 30 other supply analysts, I knewthat I wanted to be passionate about what I’m doing andalthough I enjoyed my responsibilities - shipping car tools wasn’tfor me. I wanted to get meaning in what I do – therefore medicaldevices supply Chain felt a much better fit. Johnson & Johnsonhas an amazing attitude towards their customers and everythingthat J&J do.

“so at the end I found my perfect fit – I wanted to have a broad setof responsibilities, to feel accepted and appreciated within ateam. To be given a chance to do challenging projects that canmake a difference and to work for a company that has strong

‘Credo’ values and a great attitude all across the business.

“Taking a work placement is definitely a win-win deal. In exchangefor one year of your life you get a really professional experience, fast development opportunities and a clear understanding aboutmany things relevant in the future.

“on top of that, you get the opportunity to live in another country,to travel around, learn additional language and meet some reallyawesome people.

“The University’s logistics degree placement gave me theopportunity to work for J&J’s directors which meant working in ahighly professional environment, with many responsibilities and achance to lead projects and teams.

“For one year, J&J not only entrusted me with the duties ofoperations Coordinator but gave me opportunities to really makea difference. For example one of the projects led by mesaved more than €2m for the company. It wasquite a big deal for me as a student to have anopportunity not only to learn but also toprove myself and improve by realbusiness processes.

“after my placement year, thefinal year in university felt somuch easier because ofall the knowledgeand experiencethat I hadgained.”

I would like to give all the credit tothe University of Huddersfield which actually helped me in getting access into the UK job market as well as remodelling me tofind my feet in a very different work place than my country with confidence.

“Huddersfield is a beautiful place and I miss the walks to the Victorian Castle Hill tower that is the landmark of the town. Thestructure of the town for me was very handy, having the railway station at one end, walking through the town to the campus.

“The campus also was exciting with modern structures and I always had good support from my tutors with excellent facilitieslike the 24-hour library which suited my time for my study.”

“The quality education provided at the University of Huddersfield has hada very positive impact on my career and I believe it prepared me for realworld situations. The lectures, supervisions and the facilities availableare all on a very high level. The professionality of the University staffteaches the students how to work and act as professionals themselves.

“my Bachelor’s course in Criminology and International Politics seemedquite rare and offered a mixture of disciplines showing us correlationsbetween crime and poverty. With our lecturers and classmates, we spentmuch time debating, discussing and sharing ideas. This motivated andpushed me to learn a lot on my own. It taught me to think moreindependently and critically, putting emphasis on ability to analyse, which is crucial for effective international development projectmanagement, which I wanted to focus on.

“my master’s by research degree allowed me to look into internationaldevelopment in greater depth. It also required me to take responsibilityfor my own work and improved my ability to plan ahead. moreover, Iappreciated the opportunity to develop within a multinationalenvironment, learning about other cultures. I think all of these skills werecrucial in securing my dream job in international development and theUniversity was where it all began.”

“I received such a warm welcome at theUniversity of Huddersfield when Istarted my French andCommunications arts degree.Huddersfield is a good size and reallygave you that feel of a university town.

“my time at the University has had animpact on my career and is certainlywhere it all began. The course seemedunusual and offered a mixture ofdisciplines including linguistics,French literature and media-relationsamong other areas. I and some otherstudents spent a year in a Frenchuniversity in the city of Besançonwhich furthered my studies of Frenchtelevision and culture.”

sally has been working for the BBC forover 15 years, starting as a broadcastjournalist at her local radio station.

“I am from Huddersfield so maybe I am biased but it is a great town with friendlypeople. during the course of my degree in Communication arts with spanish Igot involved in some good projects in local radio and television that inspiredme towards a career in sports journalism, as well as getting to spend a yearworking in oviedo, spain.

“This gave me the opportunity to pursue my early career in Barcelona, whicheventually led back to the BBC. I don’t think you fully appreciate theopportunities presented to you whilst at university and how close they are tothe real world. The biggest lesson is that you must apply yourself becausenobody else will do it for you. as in life, you will only get out what you areprepared to put in.”

“my electrical engineering degree proved invaluable for developing myskills because when you start your first job it can often take time beforeyou are given the responsibility to work on the high profile projects. Butbecause of their confidence in the skills I had obtained from my degreehere at Huddersfield, from day one, they have had me working on theimportant assignments, which is great.

“I have been involved in certification of Trent XWB eeC which has beeninstalled on Trent XWB engine for airbus a350. The rolls-royce TrentXWB, specifically designed for operation on the airbus a350 XWB family,is the most efficient large civil aerospace engine ever produced.

“If you are a non-UK national this can often prove very difficult but with thehelp of the University's Computing and engineering Placement Unit, in thethird year of my Beng degree I took part in a really successful one yearwork-placement as an industrial engineer where I got hands on experiencein my chosen industry.  This shows just how successful the University is athelping students get into work during and after their studies. ”

“I chose International design marketing andCommunications as my graduate programme because theprogramme was the perfect match of what I was looking forwhich had both design and Communications. TheUniversity of Huddersfield was also the only university, which started the programme in January which suited mewell.

“Before the University of Huddersfield, my background wasin graphic design. When I looked for a good university tofurther my education, the University of Huddersfield wasthe right decision due to its well-designed programs. Theyare comprehensive with limited numbers of students. also, the programmes were built for different interests andlearning methodologies.

“during my time there, the University always provided thestudents with up to date technologies and learningmaterials. access to the library was 24 hour with anincredible variety of books and unlimited online courseswhich were vital for students to complete their assignments.

The staff were friendly and helpful whenever I had anyquestions or concerns.

“going to the University of Huddersfield has been a greatexperience in my life. during my time at the university, I wastaught and mentored by knowledgeable and well-respected professors. Courses were built based onone-to-one models where every student had the valuabletime for their university projects.

“every class was made of in-class sections, research andgroup work. after graduation, the knowledge and skills Igained through the university have helped me in many wayswith my daily work.

“Last but not least, while my previous universities requiredstudents to memorise everything, the University ofHuddersfield allowed and expected students to explore andthink on their own. I heartily recommend the University ofHuddersfield to any student looking for a comprehensiveyet comfortable graduate educational programme. “

“Taking the opportunity of a one year work placement year allowedme to find out exactly what career I wanted and refine my focus.

“I was very motivated to take a year in the workplace so I could learnmore and gain experience, preparing me better for what employersare looking for.

“over a 12 month period I successfully gained work placements withthree different companies in China. This helped me to understandhow different businesses operate and also allowed me to learn awide range of skills that I may not normally had the chance to.

“among my many numerous tasks was business administration, conference bookings, travel arranging, events management, exporting, logistics and writing plans.

“In addition I was working with international companies whichgave me a real insight and understanding of the importance ofa relationship between the logistics sector and eventsmanagement. I also began to understand how differentconsumer behaviour operates around the world.

“Being apart of a team was also a learning experience for me.you gain such skills as how to manage people, gaindiscipline, time management and general teamwork.

“Taking a placement year is a unique opportunity to implement allgreat theoretical knowledge gained from your studies into real lifeexperiences. I think all students should take a work placement as apart of their degree to develop not only professional but alsointerpersonal skills.

“Working for an international company has given me the opportunityto continue the development of my professional and personal skills. Iconsider this to be the most challenging task I have ever done, itcould be said that it is not easy to get used to a new workenvironment especially in a completely new country. However, I dorecognise all the benefits and I am ready for the challenge ahead.”

“The biggest benefit of one year work placement is the impregnable lead you get at thetime of graduation over those who don’t do placement. The experience you get bydoing a placement is unmatchable, as a student you wouldn’t realise what huge impactit makes on you when coming back to final year and afterwards. It’s not only making youmore marketable after graduation, it also helps you in getting the right approachtowards study. For me it has unlocked so many mysteries about industry that used totangle in my mind.

“It has shown from this year that cramming books, reading theories and getting straighta’s in modules wouldn’t alone assure you success in life. you still need to work hard andsucceed within a manufacturing and engineering environment.

“From having a placement within such a large and global organisation, I think that I havehad an invaluable manufacturing and engineering linked experience at the company.not only have I learnt the ins and outs of the car manufacturing industry, I have had theinsight of working with people from all different departments such as manufacturingengineering (m.e.), supply Chain, World Facilities group (WFg), Quality assurance (Q.a.),Human resources (H.r.) etc. and seen how they work with each other.”

“my industrial placement year with Bentley motors hasbeen excellent! I have enjoyed every bit of it anddeveloped a lot of knowledge and experience. Workingin Paint operations within the department ofmanufacturing has given me an opportunity to dosome hands-on work with the shop floor colleagues aswell as understand and apply manufacturing processknowledge. Working with Bentley has also providedexperience with being involved in projects and facingreal industrial problems and ways to resolve it. The

“The University of Huddersfield has a strong focus onencouraging their students to take a placement year andhelps them throughout the entire application process. Ihave been encouraged during my first year by the lecturersto create my own online portfolio and to make sure it willrepresent my personal brand. after attending a couple ofpresentations from Huddersfield students that were onplacement or just completed a year in industry, I fullyunderstood the advantages it would have on my futurecareer plan.

“during my placement year I have learned more that I couldimagine about the technology industry. an internship atmicrosoft is an incredible opportunity for any student, as itoffers you innumerable ways to develop your skills, as wellas your network. I have been given real developmentresponsibilities starting with my first month, just like all theother engineers in my team.

“I felt no pressure at the beginning to do things perfectlyand they have encouraged me all the way to learn theprocesses and achieve the tasks I had to complete. It is agreat environment to learn, as everybody is there tosupport you as an intern and help you grow. anotheraspect I enjoyed in particular is the fact that as aninternational student, I had the opportunity to work in avery diverse and multi-cultural environment. developers inthe London office came from all around the world, so Ihave learned a lot from their backgrounds and experiences.

“In regards to my future career plans, this placementopportunity at microsoft has definitely made me feel muchmore confident. I know exactly now how the industry works,I have had practical work experience with the agile andtest methodologies used in the software industry, that areinvaluable for any informatics graduate. I feel extremelyconfident in my opportunities after graduation and Icannot emphasise enough how useful a placement yearwas as part of my undergraduate degree.”

“I wanted a university that wasn’t pigeon holedto a certain area and Huddersfield also offeredthe opportunity of a placement year as part ofthe course which was important to me.

“my placement year has been an amazing andvery worthwhile experience. I have gained vitaland essential knowledge, including makingthe necessary contacts to increase my jobprospects when I graduate.

I had several placements during myplacement year, my favourite being at JimmyChoo as a Pr Intern. I worked exclusively withthe global Pr officer on all global samplerequests, sample trafficking, working variousevents including press days. It was the natureof the internship that made it my favourite as Iworked at numerous events. I was able todevelop great relationships with mycolleagues whilst at Jimmy Choo.

“I was a Production assistant for the companyFashion scout at London Fashion Week whichinvolved dealing with all aspects of backstagework for fashion shows such as dealing withdesigners, Pr teams, models, hair and makeup crew.

“at moschino I was employed as a Pr Internand this role allowed me to get involved in thehandling of all samples trafficking in and outof the press office, holding appointments withstylists, liaising with international offices andpress/publications, organising the showroom, working press days and London Fashion Week.

“Whilst working at Harper’s Bazaar for theirFashion Cupboard I was responsible for allsamples in and out of the cupboard, assistingon shoots, calling in samples and working oncredits for issues.”

“I was working as a VLe support assistant (Virtual Learning supportassistant) in the Business school at the University of Huddersfield.

“I decided to take a placement year as I considered that it willdevelop and prepare me for my future career. after talking withsome of my academics Business school, I realised that theplacement year will help me to gain skills such as the ability towork in a team. These interpersonal skills are veryimportant for my future job, and employers usually lookfor individuals who are very well prepared.

“In addition, I believe that it’s good to take aplacement year as it will give you the practicalexperience in the industry you wish to work in.you can never know exactly in whatenvironment you want to work until you havebeen practically in that role.

“This placement year gave me theopportunity to change and mature as anindividual and as a future employee. I havean amazing supervisor, who helped me tobecome a better person. I learned how tobe more patient, how to prioritise mytasks and manage my time properly.

“Furthermore, I am strongly convincedthat this year was one of the best onesfrom my university life. I met a lot of newpeople, with different characters andbackgrounds. during this year, I workedin the office but I had the opportunityto organise events as well.

“I learned how to behave in aprofessional environment, where I amnot considered to be a studentanymore. I had to take initiative, solve my daily tasks and actmaturely. In my opinion, thosestudents who decide to take aplacement year will be betterprepared and developed for the realwork environment. “I graduated with a degree in Transport design from theUniversity of Huddersfield. my company is a young, butrapidly developing company based in the heart of almatycity, Kazakhstan.

“In 2015 we were awarded the prestigious Luxury Lifestyleaward in the category of Best Interior design studio. Theevent was held in dubai and has been officially partneredand sponsored by audi Corporate.

“I have had a very broad experience with the leadingcompanies that are based in London, Italy and monaco.after graduating I worked in the field of superyacht design, private jets and interior design on large-scale residentialprojects. The short-term internships turned into successfulemployment that lasted for almost 3 years. not only did Iget the extensive and valuable experience to developprofessionally, but I was inspired to create a designcompany focused on luxury segment in my homeland.

“during the operating years the company had a greatopportunity to design luxurious jewellery and perfumeretails shops, high end luxury apartments and villas inKazakhstan and Central europe.

“I believe that the degree at Huddersfield gave me a broadvariety of skills and knowledge to be successful in thecreative industry.

"The employers were amazed on the amount of input that Iwas giving into the design process during my workexperiences. I can't forget how at the end of the first week

of a short internship in one of the companies the directoroffered me a full time position.

“during the employment years I always dreamt of running myown company and just couldn't wait long time for it. When Idecided to work for myself and establish a proper company Iwas criticised by some experts due to little experience at thefield and lack of financial stability. I agree it is very scary tostart your own company; you make mistakes and run crazysometimes. But it is such a great feeling when you see yourclients with happy faces using bespoke products and interiorspaces which are results of combined creativity and clientswishes.

“For those who wish to run their own businesses I wouldsuggest to gain some experience from the best companiesin the market, even for free as you are investing in yourself.do not stay for long time, try to learn as much as you canand find a perfect time to leave and start at your own. I think employers would hate me after reading this!"

Though it hasbeen nearly 50 years since the turbocharger has been developed and used inthe automotive industry, there is no standard methodology to test the effectof low cycle fatigue (LCF) in a turbo compressor. research and investigationshave shown different results in laboratory tests, field results and finiteelement analysis (Fea). as a part of my Phd, I am working on developing astandard methodology of testing for the effect of LCF in turbo compressors.

“I have always wanted to work in the automotive industry and with largecompanies such as mitsubishi setting up in Bangladesh, I will be well placed tofind a key job in my home country’s burgeoning motor industry when I return.”
