SEMIANNUAL REPORT
September 2008 - March 2009
University of Guanajuato Chapter
This year was full of activities for the student chapter. It began with the integration of new members to the chapter having a total of 22 members now and it keeps growing thanks to the work we’ve all done within the chapter. We report the activities done from the last report until now, we also report the financial information and future activities that we plan to carry out with the help of the academic group of optoelectronics of our faculty including our advisor of the chapter.
CHAPTER OFFICERS
President: Rosa J. Pérez [email protected] Vice-president: Maricruz Ortiz Secretary: Cristina Herrera Treasurer: Manuel Delgado Advisor: Igor Sukoivanov
MIEMBERS
During this year we’ve been working on making the chapter bigger because we believe that this is the way to grow as a chapter and, therefore, cover activities in areas such as research and recreation. We’ll continue working in order to have a stronger
chapter and with more participation of the students of our university. Now we show the list of the actual members of the chapter.

ACTIVITIES
1. 2nd Seminary of Optoelectronics 2008
To the personal grow of each member of the chapter and the people interested in the optic area, the chapter continue with the realization of the second seminary of optoelectronic in which some students and professors present their advances of their thesis and research projects, respectively. In this occasion we had the participation of a phD, a PhD student, two master students and three bachelors students. The seminary was the one presented next.

2. Participation on the “2nd Experimental Physics Fair to Basic Education”
The Chemistry Faculty of the University of Guanajuato carried out the 2nd Experimental Physics Fair for Basic Education, where the chapter was invited to present simples experiments of optics and photonics. Students of many primary schools of Guanajuato city made a tour by the installations and they observed the experiments that we had prepared. This event was on September 2008.

3. Lecture “Fabrication of optic fiber components”
This lecture was given by Ph. D. Miguel Andrés of the applied physics department of the University of Valencia, España. It took place on the facilities of our faculty on October 27, 2008. We count with the assistance of 40 persons among proffesors, member of the chapter and students of out faculty.

chapter.
4. Lasers and Optic Fibers National Congress
The SPIE student chapter members of the University of Nuevo León among their chapter advisor hosted the 1st Lasers and Optics Fibers National Congress (1er CONALAFO, Congreso Nacional de Láseres y Fibras Ópticas) that took place on the physics-mathematics faculty of the University of Nuevo León. We were invited by the student chapter to participate in the congress and form bonds among our chapters.

Guanajuato on the 1rst CONALAFO.
5. 4th Optic Regional Encounter and 1st Optic and Photonic University Reunion
The so expected 4th Optic Regional Encounter (4to ERO, Encuentro Regional de Óptica) and 1st Optic and Photonic University Reunion (1er RUFO, Reunión Universitaria de Fótonica y Óptica) took place on November 12-14, 2008. It’s quite a tradition that our chapter forms a part of the organization. It’s a success because it offers, beside lectures, workshops in which the participants can experience a little bit of photonics and optics. These events where realized for second time in the facilities of our faculty. We hosted more than 150 students coming from Zacatecas, Morelia, Oaxaca; and over 30 regional investigators.

6. Lecture “Nonlinear Fiber Optics”
We had the opportunity to have Professor Mario Ferreira, researcher of the University of Aveiro, Portugal, as an invited of the chapter using the visiting lecturer benefit of the SPIE in the activities of the 4th ERO. As a SPIE student chapert we felt honored to had professor Ferreira in his lecture "NONLINEAR FIBER OPTICS". This gave us an idea about the research in fiber optics around the world. We had the participation of 50 persons of many institutions. Besides the lectura, profesor Mario had the chanse to participate in other informal activities with the members of the chapter.

7. Gattering of end of year
At the end of 2008 we got together with the optoelectronic group of the faculty to talk about our experiences, good ones and bad ones, and how much have we learned from them. We also enjoyed a delicious meal.

8. Seminario del Profesor Harvey N. Rutt.
In January 2009 we participated on the seminary of Professor Harvey N. Ruth of the University of Southampton where he talked about optic fibers. This was a one day event where we had the participation of 20 persons approximately between teachers and members of the chapter. 9. 3th Seminary of Optoelectronics Winter 2009
At the beginning of the year we planed, with the collaboration of the optoelectronic group of our faculty, the first seminary of 2009. As always we have the participation of professors, chapter members and students working in the optic area. We had the participation of 15 persons per season. Now we show the program.

10. Visito f the Internacional President of SPIE
Past March 4, 2009 we had the honor of the visit of Professor Maria Yzuel, International president of SPIE. In her visit, she gave us the lecture “Characterization and Analysis of LCoS displays” and a chat about SPIE. We had the opportunity of showing her the activities that we’ve done and the ones we planed to do. We also show her the laboratories that we count on our faculty and the research projects that we’re working on under the assessor of the optoelectronic group. We count with the participation of 25 persons including students and chapter members.

WEB SITE
We have created our web site where we report our news, activities, events and information of the work that we’ve done. We update continuously the web site in order to have the recent activities done by our chapter. Know we’re working on the English vertion of our website.
