%&'*+ I was astonished when I came to .now that I was selected to the Faculty of MedicineColombo and the day I came to the Medical Faculty I felt li.e a .in$" 1e loo.down upon theMedical raduates from Peradeniya , 3uhuna and 4affna because we were the best" 1e were thecream" 1e were 5ery much proud of oursel5es"

%&'*+ I still remember when the Pri5ate Medical Colla$e issue came in mid 6i$hties we openly protested" I recall one incident when some students from the PMC came for a practical session atthe Colombo Faculty we ra$$ed them and humiliated them" %&'*+ 1e or$anied meetin$s to

educate our fellow students" Alon$ with some of our Medical students 8%&'*+ #alasooriya , A"M4ayasiri , Prasanna unasena etc9 we launched a poster campai$nin$ a$ainst the PMC"

%&'*+ In ::;, the AMP 8Assistant Medical Practitioners9 matter emer$ed and we protestedthem" I encoura$ed some of my batch mates to continue the protest and we or$anied somestri.es"

%&'*+ After some years, the Forei$n Medical raduates from <==3, #ul$aria, and Cuba came to=ri >an.a and started practicin$ as doctors" A$ain, we made a bi$ protest to safe$uard theMedicine in =ri >an.a" In ::7, I fully supported a poster campin$ a$ainst Forei$n Medicalraduates"

%&'*+ Inside us, there was a re/ection and disre$ard for the doctors who were not ori$inally fromthe Colombo Medical Faculty" 1e considered them as inefficient and practitioners without hi$h*?uality .nowled$e"

%&'*+ In 200@, I went to <=A and 6n$land and had the opportunity to 5isit some hospitals" AlsoI 5isited some <ni5ersities and echan$ed ideas" radually I started ?uestionin$ my self aboutour supreme position as the Doctor from the Colombo Medical Faculty"%&'*+ Are we the bestB

%&'*+ My eposure to the outside world told me that we were li5in$ in a false dream for manyyears" %&'*+ I realied that there are other educational institutions much better and far ad5anced

than us"

%&'*+ 3ecently I came to .now that accordin$ to the international ran.in$ the position of the<ni5ersity of Colombo has drastically $one down and it plays below @00 th ran. " In the Asianuni5ersity, ran.in$ !he <ni5ersity of Colombo is the last" 5er the past few decades, ourMedical Faculties ha5e not contributed si$nificant international research or publications" one of our =ri >na.an professors were reco$nied in the international medical field" #ut in the otherhand the <ni5ersities and%&'*+ %&'*+ in India, epal, #an$ladesh had made remar.ableimpacts" !heir uni5ersity professors are in5ited to the international forums and they contribute alot"

%&'*+ In <E I met a =ri >an.an Doctor who had passed out from the PMC 3a$ama and latermi$rated to 6n$land" e wor.s as a Consultant Anesthetist in a presti$ious ospital in the<nited Ein$dom" In the <=A, I met a Doctor who had a 3ussian de$ree now ser5in$ as anassociate Professor in Microbiolo$y in one of the top <ni5ersities in >os An$eles" For manyyears, we fou$ht with these people and chased them from our health system" ow they are doin$etremely well in other countries $i5in$ their .nowled$e and s.ills to other people"

%&'*+ ow I ha5e a $uilty feelin$ that we bloc.ed these people ser5in$ the =ri >an.ans"Althou$h we said that, we wanted to protect the free education and the health system of =ri>an.a most of my colla$es 8includin$ me9 are much focused on pri5ate practice rather than thehealth system or the interests of the a5era$e =ri >an.ans" %&'*+ !his may be harsh but it is the

truth" Most of my collea$ues would say yes to this fact if they were ?uestioned by theirconscience"

%&'*+ 1hy we beha5ed in a superior mentalityB #ecause we were not eposed to the outsideworld" All these years we were li5in$ li.e fro$s in a deep well without seein$ the outer world"1e thou$ht that we were the best, we disre$arded other $raduates and but finally I realied thatwe were wron$"

%&'*+ 1e fou$ht AMP s disre$ardin$ their prolon$ ser5ice 8o5er 2@ years9 to the public" 1henI was wor.in$ in peripheral hospitals I ha5e met s.illed assistant medical practitioners, but I wasunwillin$ to admire them may be due to my hi$h e$o"

%&'*+ 3ecently I did a small study, medical ne$li$ence in =ri >an.a startin$ from Priyani =oysa5s Arsa.ularatne case, the death of ran5ille 3odri$o, the death of Prabath Manawasin$e etc"=hoc.in$ly I found that the most of the accused were local $raduates predominantly from myAlma Mater"%&'*+

%&'*+ 1hy our uni5ersities became more and more inefficientB I blame the uni5ersity mafia thatruined the system" !he uni5ersity authorities were not interested in recruitin$ the best students as

%&'*+ ur superior mentality made us dormant we did not do any internationally identifiable

research, any 5aluable publication or disco5ery" =o we are lower than the uni5ersities in Africa"

I a$ree with most of the content, my obser5ations are!here are se5eral reasons for our Colombo Medical Faculty and other uni5ersities to $odown in ran.in$"9 !here is no mechanism to encoura$eTappreciate or reco$nise the staff members whoare doin$ international le5el research or more importantly who are $uidin$ their studentsto ac?uire $ood research s.ills"29 !herefore lectures would be more comfortable in doin$ one lecture per term and then$o to the pri5ate practice"9 !here is no mechanism in our uni5ersities to accommodate students' feedbac. inlectures' promotions, if we had they would ha5e done so much producti5e wor. ratherthan always underminin$ bri$ht students"

K9 !here is not appraisal system to see what lectures are doin$, no accountability inresearch or teachin$, no tar$ets and no critical analysis"@9 Fundin$ for departments are not based on the output, if the uni5ersity decides to $i5eonly essential fundin$ as co* fundin$ and etra amount accordin$ to their research andtrainin$ output, most of these lectures will suddenly be awa.eOOOOOOOO;9 Most of our senior academic do not li.e to see their /unior ha5in$ a better researchcareer" !hey want their /unior to perform less than these seniors thorou$h out their li5esand if they try to bypass the seniors the maimum return is $uaranteed" =o /unior staffwould prefer to be inacti5e and /ust spend their time rather than creatin$ problems forthemsel5es"79 If some academics try to establish collaboration others will find an administrati5e
