MATRICULATION AND THE NATIONAL SENIOR CERTIFICATE (NSC) “Matriculation” means you have met the legal minimum admission requirement for degree study. This means that:• your NSC has been endorsed by UMALUSI to the effect that you have met the minimum requirements for admission to

bachelors degree (or if applying for a diploma, the minimum requirements for admission to diploma study) at a South African university, or

• your Senior Certificate has been endorsed by UMALUSI to the effect that you have met the minimum requirements for admission to degree study in a South African university; or

• you have a certificate of complete exemption from matriculation requirements, issued by the Matriculation Board.

We set additional admission requirements over and above the minimum legal eligibility requirement. In addition to the legal minimum you must also meet the admission requirements for your programme of study. These are set out in our Prospectus.

CONDITIONAL MATRICULATION EXEMPTION Although we do not usually accept applicants with certificates of Conditional Exemption, we will give consideration to applicants who qualify for Conditional Exemption. These certificates can be granted to:• South Africans on the grounds of mature age, subject to minimum requirements as set by the Matriculation Board • applicants who have written a school-leaving examination other than the SA Senior Certificate• immigrants• applicants who have obtained certain post-school qualifications

Where we offer you a study place, and you intend to register at UCT in 2021, it is your responsibility to apply for the issue of the necessary conditional exemption certificate. This is done by submitting the appropriate application form, documents and fee to UCT at registration. UCT then forwards this to the Matriculation Board. You will be advised by the relevant faculty office.

ELIGIBILITY FOR MATRICULATION EXEMPTION FOR HOLDERS OF FOREIGN QUALIFICATIONS

If you have a school-leaving certificate from an international or foreign examining authority, to establish if you are eligible for a matriculation exemption certificate, consult the website at http://mb.usaf.ac.za/ or write to: HE Enrolment Programme (Matriculation Board), PO Box 3854, Pretoria 0001, South Africa Tel: +27 010 591 4401/2 Fax: +27 86 680 5727 Email: [email protected] ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR UNDERGRADUATE STUDY Familiarise yourself with our admission criteria. Should you hold a school-leaving certificate for which admission criteria are not specified in the 2021 Undergraduate Prospectus, your application will be considered individually, taking into account your school curriculum, performance and National Benchmark Test results, where appropriate.

The 2021 Undergraduate Prospectus gives details of our admission requirements. Meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee admission. Places are limited for reasons of capacity and this could mean that applicants who meet the minimum admission requirements do not receive an offer of a study place.

NATIONAL BENCHMARK TESTS (NBTS) All undergraduate applicants who are normally resident in, or have completed schooling in South Africa must write the National Benchmark Tests (NBTs), and all applicants to programmes in Health Sciences must write the NBTs.You must:• register for the NBTs before you apply (online, or before you submit a paper application form);• include your NBT registration number in your application;• have written the NBTs by 31 August 2020 for Health Sciences and 10 October 2020 for other Faculties.

Applicants to the Faculty of Law and to Faculty of Humanities programmes, where Mathematics is not a requirement, need to write only the Academic and Quantitative Literacy (AQL) test. Applicants to Commerce, Engineering & the Built Environment, Health Sciences, and Science, must write both the AQL and the Mathematics NBT tests.

For information on the NBTs, please either visit www.nbt.ac.za, or call 021 650 3523, or email [email protected], or write to: The Project Secretary Centre for Educational Testing for Access and PlacementUniversity of Cape TownPrivate Bag X3Rondebosch7701 When to write National Benchmark Tests

We strongly encourage you to write the NBTsas early as possible. The final date for writing the NBTs is 10 October 2020 or 31 August if you are applying for admission to a programme in the Faculty of Health Sciences. You do not need to submit your NBT results to UCT. We will receive these directly from the NBT Offices.

If you are unable to write the NBTs by 10 October 2020 you must apply to the Admissions Office before the end of September 2020 for permission to write the NBTs later. Permission will be granted only if there is evidence that you were unable to write. Please note (1) that NBTs can be written outside SA; and (2) your application for undergraduate study may be denied if you do not write by 10 October 2020 unless you have applied for and obtained permission to write at a later date.

INTERNATIONAL APPLICANTS

If you are an international student, ensure that you visit the website of our International Academic Programmes Office (IAPO).

UCT’s International Academic Programmes Office (IAPO) supports international students and researchers from over 100 countries who enroll for taught courses and undertake to complete their research at UCT. The Office provide letters which support visa applications for study and research at UCT; advise on immigration-related requirements; and advocate for students’ visa challenges. It also advises students on the international tuition and housing fees; the costs of living in Cape Town; and the support services available at UCT to help students settle in. Before any international student can be registered at UCT, their immigration-related documents (passport, visa and medical aid) and tuition fee payments are verified, captured and uploaded to the students’ record system by the staff of IAPO, through a process called pre-registration. International students must complete pre-registration before proceeding to academic registration and course enrolment. In addition, IAPO co-ordinates programmes and events which facilitate student integration into our diverse student community, and manages international partnerships and donor funded programmes, which enables international student mobility.

Study Visas

In terms of the Immigration Act No 13 of 2002, if you are resident outside of South Africa and are not a South African citizen or do not have permanent residence, you are required to obtain a study visa to enter the Republic for the purpose of attending the University. It is important that your visa is endorsed specifically for study at UCT 1.

If you hold refugee or asylum seeker status you are exempt from needing a study visa to attend the University however, you are required to produce a valid refugee or asylum seeker permit.

The offer of a study place by the University does not bind the Department of Home Affairs in any way to allow you to study in South Africa, nor does it remove the need for you to obtain permission to enter the country. If you are offered a study place, please apply im-

1 If you are residing in South Africa at the time of your application for undergraduate study at UCT, ensure that your visa is endorsed for study at UCT and renewed to cover the duration of your postgraduate programme. Visa renewals and corrections to visa conditions can be facilitated through the VFS Global Office in Cape Town.

an offer of admission, we may await your NBT results, improved school examination results, predicted scores, etc. A deferred deci-sion does not mean that your application is unsuccessful.

• Conditional Offer 1 : this means that we are offering you a place with conditions, which are included in the offer letter that you will receive from us. Your offer of a place is confirmed only when you meet these conditions. You need to establish the final status before arriving at UCT for registration in 2021.

• Firm Offer: this means that you are offered a place without conditions.• Waitlisted: this means that a final decision on your application will be taken when we have further information about the entire

pool of applicants. This additional information will allow us to assess your application in relation to others.• Denied: your application was unsuccessful.

A typical application will have various statuses throughout the application cycle. It is important to monitor your application status.

1 Note for international students only. Once you have received a conditional or firm study place you will automatically be issued with a letter of undertaking from the International Academic Programmes Office (IAPO), in support of your study visa application. The letter of undertaking will be sent to the email address recorded on your application for admission. This letter will be sent within 3 working days of receiving your conditional or firm study place. See pages 9-10 for study visa information.
