Eyes High is the University of Calgary’s new strategic direction, a bold and ambitious vision to become one of Canada’s top five research universities, grounded in innovative learning and teaching and fully integrated with the community of Calgary, by the university’s 50th anniversary in 2016.

Thank you for being part of this vision.

HIGH FIVES TO DONORS LIKE YOU—

FOR INSPIRING GREATNESS ON

AND OFF CAMPUS.

HERE ARE SOME OF YOUR STORIES.

STRENGTH IN NUMBERS

Significant change can start with one small action. For John Lamacraft, all it took was a little inspiration.

Under his leadership, the retired businessman and long-time friend of the late Harley N. Hotchkiss, spearheaded a fundraising drive to create the Rebecca Hotchkiss International Scholar Exchange Program (RHISE) at the Hotchkiss Brain Institute. RHISE will take neuroscience research and education beyond borders, bringing international neuroscience leaders to Calgary and sending our top researchers around the globe to share with and learn from the best.

Lamacraft demonstrated the greatest outcome of altruism—motivating others to volunteer and give back in a big way—all to further research and education in support of the Faculty of Medicine and the Hotchkiss Brain Institute. The impact of his actions, and the actions of the more than 40 donors who joined his cause, will bring us closer to becoming the premier international centre for neuroscience research and education.

John passed away in August 2012. His legacy of volunteerism will live on here with us.

BUILDING A COMMUNITY BEYOND OUR CAMPUS

The University of Calgary continues to serve the community by making a difference in the areas that have the greatest need. The annual Homes for Hope program is one among many campus-supported charitable initiatives. The program, which is run through the Schulich School of Engineering and Boardwalk REIT, has been sending students and volunteers to build homes in Mexico since 2009.

But that’s not the only way we’re building communities. We’ve also worked to bring opportunities for students, researchers and the general public, to gain insight into our connection to art, culture and world history. An example of this is through the two significant projects Libraries and Cultural Resources has embarked on—the Chicksands collection of military books and writings from the 1750s, and the online migration of the Nickle Coin collection. Both have brought a piece of history to Calgary, and invite the rest of the world to share in our culture.

Thanks to our donors, we’ve been able to serve and lead in communities locally, nationally and internationally.

HELPING THE LEADERS OF TODAY BECOME BETTER LEADERS OF TOMORROW

Leadership development has an important place at the University of Calgary. Several campus initiatives are helping to hone students’ leadership skills through a variety of opportunities, including mentoring, training and community service programs.

The Leadership and Student Engagement program will co-ordinate all new and existing leadership activities institutionally, while the Centre for Advanced Leadership in Business will cultivate ethical leadership by impacting every aspect of the student experience at the Haskayne School of Business.

For students who are already leaders in the making, the Scholar’s Academy provides them with guidance and mentorship as they pursue excellence, and the Chancellor’s Club Scholarships ensure their ability to continue their studies without financial burden.

Your support today empowers our students to become the next generation of leaders tomorrow.

High five to our Superfund superheroes—like you—who help support much-needed

areas on campus.

SUPERHEROES UNITE!

The Annual Giving Superfund pools the contributions of alumni and friends—you, our superheroes—and funds an area of need on campus. Since 2009, more than 1,800 donors have given more than $500,000. Last year, these dollars supported student bursaries and a significant renovation to the second floor of the Social Sciences building, scheduled to be completed in January of 2013. The renovation will translate to a new 60-seat theatre and more student study and group meeting areas to enhance the student experience. In future, Superfund dollars will continue to support much-needed campus renovations, library resources and equipment, and other capital expenses.

A DONOR’S TOUCH: WHAT JOAN SNYDER HAS MEANT FOR THE UNIVERSITY OF CALGARY

Joan Snyder is more than just a generous donor to the University of Calgary. She is one of our biggest cheerleaders—a champion for the Dinos women’s hockey program, through the Joan Snyder Program of Excellence; a staunch supporter of several research initiatives at the Faculty of Medicine; and a University of Calgary honorary degree holder.

Joan’s giving spirit is her greatest gift, along with her genuine passion for our students and what we do on campus. And it’s paying off. In November 2011, Paul Kubes, director of the Calvin, Phoebe and Joan Snyder Institute of Infection, Immunity and Inflammation, was named the newest Canadian Institutes of Health Research, Health Researcher of the Year. Months later, in March 2012, the Dinos women’s hockey team took the first national championship in the university’s history.

High fives to you, Joan, for being a true ambassador for the University of Calgary.

Friend and University of Calgary supporter, Joan Snyder, with Paul

Kubes, and Erin Davidson, a psychology major and assistant captain for the Dinos women’s

hockey team.

WE THANK YOU

We are tremendously proud of the University of Calgary’s many accomplishments this year, and we are acutely aware that our progress is the result of the vision, support and leadership of generous donors like you.

We have seen firsthand what working together can do: we have fostered groundbreaking research; supported students in their academic and community activities; and helped them develop into strong, ethical leaders. And we have given back to our community both here in this city and around the world.

Our best work, however, is yet to come. As Canada’s leading next-generation university, we will continue to inspire and support discovery, creativity and innovation across all disciplines. Located in the nation’s most enterprising city, the University of Calgary has a clear strategic direction – Eyes High – to become one of Canada’s top five research universities by 2016, grounded in innovative learning and teaching and fully integrated with the community.

It is a bold goal, and one we intend to accomplish with your continued friendship and support. We thank you for the dollars you have donated, the time you have spent with us on campus, and the programs and students you continue to stand behind. Your commitment to us has made all the difference.

High five to you for making so much of what we do, possible.

- Elizabeth Cannon, President and Vice-Chancellor, University of Calgary
