The Faculty of Management & Social Sciences

The University of Belize was created by an act of Parliament and commenced operations on August 1, 2000. The University is the national university of Belize and seeks to provide excellence in teaching, service, and research for our growing nation. It is specific in its objective to provide relevant training and education programmes to assist in Belize's economic development. With its inception, the University of Belize had six academic faculties: the Faculty of Business, the Faculty of Arts and Science, the Faculty of Education, the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology, the Faculty of Nursing, Health Sciences, and Social Work, and the Faculty of Business.

In mid-2003, the University went through a reorganizing exercise due to financial exigencies and as a way to improve efficiency. As a result of the

exercise, the University now has four academic faculties: the Faculty of Management and Social Sciences, the Faculty of Arts and Education, the Faculty of Nursing and Allied Health, and the Faculty of Science and Technology.

The mission of the new Faculty of Management and Social Sciences reads:"The Faculty of Management and Social Sciences seeks to provide professional management training to its clients with the view of achieving excellence in teaching, service, and research. Through a focused partnership with the private and public sectors, the faculty will provide quality education to assist in Belize's economic development."

Some specific goals of the Faculty include:

To equip students with the principles, concepts, techniques and knowledge necessary to take leadership positions in business, government, and Non-governmental organisation and to develop skills, knowledge, and interest in entrepreneurship.

To provide students with an awareness of the social, political, and economic environment in which business is carried out and their responsibilities and duties as managers and leaders in the system.

To develop an understanding of technology and its impact on business on the national, regional, and international environment.

To present students with an education relevant to the Belizean environment.

To provide students with the knowledge which will enable them to examine Belize's position in the global environment and examine ways to enhance Belize's competitive position.

To increase the practicality of Belize business education through a formal internship programme.

The Faculty of Management and Social Sciences is the Faculty the university devoted to educating its students to become effective and efficient business leaders in our nation. The Faculty will offer Baccalaureate Degree programmes and Associate Degree programmes. These are as follows:Baccalaureate Degrees

The Faculty of Management and Social Sciences focuses on quality graduates. It is expected that all graduates will have a well-rounded education (from the university's general core) and baccalaureate degree graduates will be technically and professionally qualified in their area of studies. Graduates at this level will be expected to take up leadership positions in middle level and upper level management of organizations and

also be expected to have tools that will lead them toward creating their own businesses. Graduates will also be well equipped with the requisite academic skills to transfer successfully into graduate programmes. Associate degree students will also boast a well-rounded education and be equipped with the necessary skills to function at the beginning levels of organizations effectively and efficiently. These graduates will also be well equipped to transfer easily into undergraduate degree programmes.

Associate Degree Courses

ACTG 201 Principles of Financial Accounting 1The aim of this three-credit course is to introduce students to the fundamental concepts and techniques of the basic accounting system as it applies to sole traders in both merchandising and service industries. The accrual and cash basis of accounting are covered, together with end-of-period adjustments. Through exercises and problems, students will gain an understanding of the accounting cycle; demonstrate proficiency in performing tasks associated with the completion of the accounting cycle, including the preparation of the income statement, statement of owner's equity and balance sheet. Students will also be able to interpret information presented on financial statements in order to make operational and investment related decisions.

ACTG 202 Principles of Financial Accounting IIThe aim of this three-credit course is to expand on ACTG 201. This course gives students an overview of the generally accepted accounting principles and their importance in financial accounting and financial statements. Expanding on the concepts and techniques required to operate a sole proprietorship, students are also introduced to the accounting system as it applies to corporations. The accounting for notes receivable, notes payable and bonds payable are covered with the necessary adjusting entries to record these assets and liabilities. Through the computation of inventory cost, using the FIFO, LIFO and Average Cost methods, the calculation of depreciation using the straight-line, units of production and declining methods, students will gain an understanding of the importance of reporting accurate accounting information that will be beneficial for both internal and external users of these information.

BCOM 210 Business CommunicationBusiness Communication focuses on the traditional and nontraditional means of transmitting information from one person to another. It will integrate the technological world we now live in with human communication and relations.

BLAW 220 Business LawBusiness Law covers the fundamental principles of commercial law, business organizations and the law of real and personal property. The course also covers the background and classification of the law, the judicial system of Belize and the law of contract with emphasis on sales and contracts. We are primarily concerned with the law as a tool or vehicle of social control over economic activity. The collection of laws that governs, regulates and facilitates the conduct of business affairs. It is designed to acquaint students with the basic legal skills required for the regulation of business, resolution of disputes, protection of property rights, exchange of property and service, etc. In a global or local market where goods, services and properties are sold subject to public law and private contracts it is necessary that the players in such markets should have some appreciation of the regulatory rules and the laws that govern business relations. There is a convergence of public policy, public law, private rights in a market where

goods, services, properties are sold or exchanged. A significant portion of the business law course involves property disposition including contracts, sales, agency, partnerships and companies.

BUS 230 Advanced KeyboardingThis is a course to help students to further develop accurate touch keyboard ability. Students will also learn formatting of personal/business letters, memoranda, simple tables and reports with emphasis on accuracy.

BUS 140 Personal NotetakingSpeed and Transcription is an advanced course in Shorthand. This study enables the student to take dictations directly and from cassette and then transcribe them directly on the computer.

BUSS 242 Records ManagementThis course is designed to prepare students to evaluate and implement an efficient and effective records management. The principles and practices of effective records management for manual and automated record systems will be provided. The need to understand the importance of record management in businesses will be emphasized.

CMCN 209 Communication SkillsThis course is geared towards an intimate understanding of the principles and functions of human communication. We will discuss communication as a transactional "process of creating meaning" (Tubbs/Moss) and as the central elements in forming and maintaining relationships. Understanding the elements of effective communication and the ability to adequately assess various communicative situations will enhance communication skills in private as well as public contexts.This is a three-credit course required for Business Administration, Tourism management and Accounting students of the associate and bachelors degree programs. Students will have an understanding of the communication process and the factors that contribute to effective communication. Students will do practical exercises to develop the ability to communicate effectively. These exercises will demonstrate how communication works as a two way process and identify the problems of one-way, verbal-only communication. Students will come to value the importance of active listening and feedback in the communication process and therefore, enhance their communication skills.

ECON 101 Introduction to EconomicsAn introductory course dealing with resources, goals and institutions of an economic system, laws of demand and supply, production and costs, national income analysis, unemployment and inflation, fiscal policy, money and banking and dollarization.

ECON 221 Principles of Macroeconomics Macroeconomics focuses on the study of the economies at a national level. This course will provide an overview of macroeconomic issues: supply and demand interaction, determination of output, unemployment and inflation, economic fluctuation. Fiscal policy, the public debt, Monetary Policy is also discussed.

ECON 222 Principles of MicroeconomicsThis course is designed to provide an understanding of basic microeconomic concepts and principles and to develop the ability to apply these concepts and principles to real world problems. Topics covered include supply and demand interaction, elasticity, production & cost, profit maximization, perfect competition, imperfect competition, environmental protection, antitrust policy, and the economics of the labor market.

FNAN 221 Principles of FinanceThe objective of the course is to provide you with an overview and understanding of the principles of financial management in small to large institutions, the issues that financial managers face in making financial decisions for an organization and some of the financial tools available to these managers for making effective financial and investment decisions for an organization. The course will introduce concepts in the area of cash flow analysis, rates of return, risk management, capital budgeting and debt and equity financing.

HOSP 162 Food & Beverage Preparation IIThe general purpose of this course is to provide learning experiences to individuals preparing to work in the Hotel and Tourism Industry. The interest of this class, therefore, is to assist in developing technical and knowledgeable based on which to build.

HOSP 163 Food & Beverage Service IThe general purpose of this course is to provide learning experiences to

individuals preparing to work in the Hotel and Tourism Industry. The interest of this class, therefore, is to assist in developing a technical and knowledgeable base, on which to build.

HOSP 166 Nutrition & SafetyStudents are introduced to safety and nutrition in the workplace that will provide them with the necessary skills for applying proper safety procedures with regards to the handling of food and equipment. The course will also be looking at the nutritional value of local and international foods.

HOSP 169 HousekeepingThe general purpose of this course is to provide learning experiences to individuals preparing to work in the hotel. The interest of this class therefore, is to assist in developing a technical and knowledgeable base on which to build.

HOSP 262 Hospitality Accounting ProcedureA basic accounting course to familiarize students with accounting concepts, terms and procedures. Preparation of Financial Statement for all forms of business will be introduced. The course will prepare students to enter the job market in accounting and more specifically, hospitality accounting. It also provides a practical background in accounting for students embarking on other careers such as clerical, sales and management positions

HOSP 269 Catering TechniquesThe general purpose of this course is to provide learning experiences to individuals to work in the Hotel and Tourism Industry. The interest of this class, therefore, is to assist in developing a technical and knowledgeable base on which to build.

MATH 121 Intermediate AlgebraThis course is an introductory Associate Level Course that will help students in developing their problem solving skills along with critical thinking skills. This course is a prerequisite for higher Algebra Courses, Calculus, economics and other physical and social sciences. The course provides a revision of algebraic concepts and methods and a working knowledge of College Algebra: Linear equations in 1 and 2 variables, system of linear equations, quadratic equations and graphing, real world problem solving.

MATH 132 Math of FinanceThis course will give attention to the use of calculators with emphasis on exponents, logarithms, mainly in computing. An appreciation of finding characteristics and mantissa will be done where tables are used. This course will emphasize Arithmetic and Geometric progressions, simple interest and simple discounts in addition to compound interest and compound discount. (Equivalent equations will be taken up) a clear understanding will be given to simple annuities and amortization and sinking funds along with depreciation.

MGMT 205 Principles of SupervisionThis course is designed to help students understand the activities of a supervisor. It focuses on the importance of effective supervision as well as the supervisory skills that are needed to operate effectively in organizations.

MGMT 285 Business EthicsThis course is designed to highlight the importance of Moral Justification of the behavior of mangers and apply Ethical principles in cases. It will also focus on ethical conduct in public and private organizations as regards to employees and governments, customers and society.

MKTG 221 Principles of MarketingThis course is designed to provide an overview of the philosophies, concepts, and tools of the discipline of marketing as they are applied to modern global markets. More significantly, it introduces the business student to the consumer oriented, opportunity seeking perspective which is so crucial to successful strategic planning

MKTG 222 Public RelationsThis three-credit course is required of all second year associate degree students pursuing marketing, hospitality management or small business management. Students will learn the principles and practices of effective public relations. Students will appreciate the supportive role public relations play in achieving the advertising and marketing objectives of profit and non-profit organizations. They will gain practical knowledge of the process of planning communication with various publics and demonstrate the ability to utilize various tools and techniques to develop a public relations program. Students will also recognize the effect public relations have on society from an ethical perspective.

MKTG 224 Principles of SellingThis course is designed to provide an overview of the philosophies, concepts and tools to create effective Sales strategies within the 21st century. In light of current globalization efforts and increase competition, the market has become increasingly sophisticated and demanding. This course introduces the student to the importance of strategic planning as well as keeping current in a changing world by solidifying partnerships with the

MKTG 226 Advertising and Sales PromotionThis course will introduce students to the fundamentals of the Integrated Marketing Communication (IMC) process which is essential to business success. Students will gain an understanding of strategic applications of advertising, sales promotion and public relations tools. The course will include the study of promotion practices and theories and the effects of advertising and promotion on the firm, the economy and the society.

PDEV 231 Personality DevelopmentThis course is for students to establish meaningful links between behavioral science and the dynamics of the work place among peers, superiors and the public.

QMGT 221 Business Statistics IThis introductory statistics course is designed for non-mathematics majors. Its primary goal is to introduce students to statistical and probabilistic models. Topics include descriptive statistics, discrete and continuous probability distributions (uniform and normal), sampling and sampling distributions, interval estimation, and hypothesis testing. Exercises are generally applications to the field of business.
