Sahara apartments is in its 11th year of operation as a studenthousing project in Tucson. Ted Mehr, the owner of Sahara
Apartments, has introduced a lot of innovations to the Tucson studenthousing market.
Ted, who still manages the building on a day to day basis developed this project as the “paranoid” father of a college agedaughter, who was concerned about his own daughter’s safety andcomfort when she had gone to live on her own while attending college.
Some of Ted’s ideas have been duplicated by others, and some arestill unique to Sahara.
For example, Sahara is still the only building that does notallow parties on site. Our motto is “The oasis for QUIET studentiving”. At Sahara you are guaranteed a quiet environment. If anyone
violates the rules, the residents can call the owner, Ted, no matter
what time of day or night. And he will drive down to the building tomake sure the violators understand that the policy is really enforced. When students move into Sahara, they get Ted’s cell phone ANDhome phone numbers, you know, just in case the cell phone runsout of battery right when someone needs to call. All residents areencouraged to call Ted if they feel uncomfortable about anything. That sort of attitude is not something that you will get from thecorporate-owned high rise competition.
In case you think our no party policy means no fun, you shouldknow that Sahara has an activity director who organizes manygroup activities sponsored by Sahara where the residents get anopportunity to get together and do fun things as a group. For instanceat the time of this writing, for the month of October, we took our
residents to Mt. Lemmon for the October Fest, Sabino Canyon for
a 13 mile hike, “Tucson Meet Yourself” event downtown, had a ganight on site with free food and refreshments, and a movie night. Walso went to the Corn Maze for Halloween and to the “InternationFestival of Tucson”. And that was just for October!
Sahara is still the only student building in Tucson that will giveevery resident a FREE bicycle to ride while living at Sahara. Weeven maintain and repair the bikes for free.
Sahara is also the only student building that provides hotelaccommodations on site, where visiting family and friends can stawhen they come to visit our residents. The hotel also accommodat professors, researchers, workshop attendees and many groups ofinternational students that are placed at Sahara by the University.
We treat our residents like they are expensive works of art in amuseum. Our gated community is protected with an infrared beamsystem that alerts the owner with an automatic cellphone call ifsomeone trespasses by climbing over the walls. 80 security camera
record all events at the perimeter of the buildingand in the public areas. And our staff who live onsite are ready to respond required. These are somethe reasons why in our 10year history we have nevreceived a “Red Tag” frothe police department.
Offering shuttle service to and from the campus is now standarpractice for a lot of buildings, but we do it every half hour from7 AM to 7 PM, on every school day.
At Sahara, you can enjoy the privacy of having your own studioapartment for a lot less than a single occupancy room at the ResideHalls, or sharing an apartment at one of the high rise buildings wit people whose lifestyles may not be compatible with yours.
While we admit we are not for everybody, nor do we want to be, this a lot more that you should know about Sahara before you decidewhat your choice of student housing should be.
Check out our website and fnd out why Sahara has
become more popular each year as the word hasspread that you can have a safe and quiet environmentand still have fun.

In 2015, the offi ce of Academic
Success & Achievement at theUniversity of Arizona launched theBear Down Summer Bridge Program,a four-week early start program thatwas designed with the needs of out-of-state students in mind. Buildingon the successes of the New StartSummer Program, which has a 47-year history on campus, Bear DownSummer Bridge allows studentsto take a general education coursewhile living in a residence hall andworking with Peer Advisors, ResidentAssistants, and Tutors. By gettingthis early start, incoming freshmencan experience life as a UA student,so when their freshman year actuallystarts they already feel like an expert.“I feel like a super-freshman. I feellike I should technically be called asophomore even though I’ve onlybeen here four weeks,” said Nyarah, a2015 participant from California.
One of the goals of the programis to get students to feel at homeat the university and in their newcity. Through social and educational
STARTING STRONGWITH BEAR DOWN SUMMER BRIDGE
programs in the residence hall, groupdiscussions and one-on-ones withtheir Peer Advisors, and off-campusevents, program participants areimmersed in the UA campus and thecity of Tucson. This includes eventsthat get participants onto the SunLinkStreetcar so that they know how toget around town, and excursions topopular Tucson destinations.
In its first year, Bear Down Sum-mer Bridge welcomed 76 incomingfreshmen from 23 different states, allowing students coming to UA,knowing no one from their hometown, to start the academic year offwith a network of friends. Max, fromAlbuquerque, told us “I think it’sgoing to be good going into the yearknowing a few people, so you’re notcompletely alone.” In fact, not onlydo participants meet a number ofother incoming students who theycan connect with, they also have the
opportunity to continue workingwith their Peer Advisor throughouttheir freshman year.
To make a seamless transition into
their freshman year, students in BearDown Summer Bridge get to movedirectly from their summer housinginto their academic year housing, eliminating the need to move backhome or find storage for their belong-ings. Once they do, each participantgets connected to one of five otherprograms on campus, helping themdevelop an even bigger network. These include Panhellenic or In-ter Fraternity Council recruitment,Bear Down Camp, Hall InvolvementTeam, a wilderness experience in theCatalina Mountains, and a studentwellness retreat.
For the second year, the staff isplanning to grow the program to over100 students and will be adding aone-unit leadership course, meaningstudents will be 4 units closer to theirdegree when they start their fresh-man year. To learn more about theBear Down Summer Bridge Program, visit bdsummerbridge.arizona.edu.Students interested in participatingfor 2016 should apply by June 29.

UA JUNIOR Tatum Hammond and sophomore Matt Lubisich are the co-directorsof the “I Will” campaign.
B A G (’19)
Thanks to the efforts of a pair of
dedicated student leaders, supportfrom nearly 20 University of Arizonadepartments and student organiza-tions, and the backing of UA admin-istrators and professional leadership, the “I Will” campaign against sexualassault kicked off this past springwith a week of programming featur-ing resource fairs, workshops, discus-sions and more.
The weeklong, early-Februaryevent – a program that includedhours of tabling, 12 unique events
and also resulted in more than 3,000signatures for its pledge to end rapeculture – was the culmination ofthe efforts of co-directors TatumHammond, a junior majoring inEnglish and graphic design and theadministrative vice president of theAssociated Students of the Univer-sity of Arizona (ASUA), and MatthewLubisich, a sophomore majoringin economics and political scienceand an ASUA senator. The two hadbeen working on the campaign since
early last summer and, inspired by asimilar campaign at the University ofMichigan, developed their ideas intoa focus on education and involvingstudents from all facets of campus,Hammond said.
From there, they reached out to“pretty much anyone that wouldlisten” and worked to involve variousUA entities, ranging from the Univer-sity of Arizona Police Department tothe Women’s Resource Center.
“Our goal, first and foremost, was
to be as inclusive as possible, and wedid that by making sure that everygroup was a part of the conversation,”Hammond said. “We reached out todifferent departments to make surethat it wasn’t just one group that wasstating its opinion, but that we werehaving all voices together. We felt likethat was really powerful.”
With studies showing that 1 in 4women and 1 in 20 men report beingthe survivor of an attempted or com-pleted sexual assault while in college,
according to the “I Will” campaign,
‘I WILL’ CAMPAIGNRAISING AWARENESS AND PROMOTING CONSENT
more than 3,000 individuals took thestep toward reversing those trends bysigning the “I Will End Rape Culture”pledge as well.
“There were a lot of [students] thatsigned up [for the pledge] and they
just seemed really into it and reallyspirited and I felt like they couldmake a difference,” said Genevieve
Wahlert, a freshman majoring in bio-medical engineering who signed the“I Will” pledge. “I think if you just in-

Both Lubisich and Hammondstressed the importance of creatinga conversation about rape culturethrough the “I Will” campaign. One ofthe ways they set out to accomplishthis was through an emphasis oneducation.
“The main goal would be to ac-tively educate the student body onwhat rape culture is and how theycan combat it in their everyday lives,”Lubisich said.
To further this goal, both co-directors hope to make the “I Will”week an annual program on campus.Hammond also said she wants to tryto incorporate the campaign into newstudent orientation.
“The reality is that rape culturedoesn’t end after one week of great
programming,” Hammond said, add-ing that there are future events in theworks to keep the conversation going.“We’d really like to have the presenceof consent education at incomingstudent orientation because sadlyconsent education isn’t somethingthat is ingrained into our educationalsystem prior, and I think it’s reallyimportant for students to be able tohave that information accessible tothem before experiencing college.” Ava Garcia (’19) is majoring in journalism
and Spanish.

Staff from the Advising ResourceCenter, Career Services and the Uni-versity of Arizona Alumni Associationhave developed some tips which youcan use to help guide your student onthe path to graduation.
> Academic AdvisingHelp your student move the
conversation with their academicadvisor beyond the question of, “whatcourses to take next semester” bydiscussing the following topics.
> Can you tell me about the types ofinternships I can find in my majorand how I go about applying?
> Do you know of anyone in the field Icould interview to find out more in-formation about their career? Whereare former students from this major
now?> I may be interested in graduate (or
professional) school after I gradu-ate. What steps should I be takingnow to get ready for the applicationprocess? How do I go about explor-ing graduate program options?
> Can you recommend professors Imeet with to discuss research (orcareer or graduate school) options?
> What questions should I be asking
you about my future in this field?
> Career ServicesYour student will have questions
and it is important that they knowyou are there to listen and supportthem with their ideas; below are somesuggested topics to discuss.
> Encourage students to create andshare with you their Plans A, B andeven C in terms of their action plansfor their post graduate life. Givethem room to fail…they will learnfrom it!
> Share your networks and connec-tions. Send students informationyou know that relates to the field

When Paulo Goes left his job andhome country of Brazil, his familydidn’t quite understand. Now, he says, his family – particularly his mother –is very proud.
The Eller College of Management’snewest dean, and the most recentdepartment head of the UA college’shighly-ranked Management Informa-tion Systems program, left what hedescribed as a comfortable career asa civil engineer to pursue a new pathin the United States – one that wouldultimately bring him to Tucson andthe UA.
“My father was a civil engineer, soI didn’t think much about doing any-thing else,” Goes said. “(But) I started
to like computers as a tool to do theproject planning, the project manage-ment.”
For two years Goes worked in thefield managing construction sites. But his passion for technology grew.Eventually, “I decided to quit my job.My family thought I was crazy. It was agood job.”
Goes left to pursue a master’sdegree in production engineering
ABOVE: New Eller College of Management dean Paulo Goes (center)converses with students inside McClelland Hall on the UA Campus.
UA’s renowned business school
taps head of top-ranked MIS
department to take reins amid
new development, opportunity
from the Federal University of Riode Janeiro. While studying there hebecame more and more involved withcomputer information systems andeventually began teaching classes.Through this experience, he “fell inlove with the academic profession.”
This ultimately brought him to theUniversity of Rochester (N.Y.) and thenthe University of Connecticut, wherehe served for nearly two decadesbefore Eller and the UA came callingin 2008.
Under Goes’ leadership, Eller’s MISdepartment has continued its runas one of the nation’s best – with itsgraduate MIS program ranked thirdand undergraduate MIS programfourth in the nation by U.S. News &World Report (Eller as a whole is No.
12 among public business schoolsand No. 22 overall). Eller is in suchcompany on the MIS list as the Mas-sachusetts Institute of Technology andCarnegie Mellon University.
Additionally under Goes’ direction, the department increased enrollment, launched an online master’s in MISprogram, and co-founded the INSITEresearch center, which focuses onbig-data analytics programs for health
care and other large data-driven indus-
tries. The department also generatedmore than $85 million in grant fundingunder Goes’ leadership – helping Eller’sposition as one of the leading businessschools in externally-funded research.
During his eight years leading Eller’sMIS department, Goes’ focus began toshift more to the administrative side ofhis role.
“I’ve always liked the administra-tive side, but I began to like it more andmore – the idea of building programs, and helping students, and mentoring
faculty and putting things together.”So when former dean Len Jessup left
to become the president of Universityof Nevada at Las Vegas, Goes tossed hishat in the ring – although not immedi-ately.
“I have to confess, it took me a while… to decide whether I wanted to leavethis very comfortable job and challengemyself with something new.”
But with the encouragement andsupport of other faculty members, Goeswent for it.

NEW ELLER COLLEGE
DEAN PAULO GOESCONTINUED FROM PAGE
After a year-long national search,Goes was selected out of the roughly50 candidates vying for the opportuni-
ty. He took over the reins of the collegeon March 14.
“Paulo has demonstrated consider-able skills as a thoughtful and effec-tive leader and is widely respectedfor his collaborative leadership style,”Andrew Comrie, the UA’s senior vicepresident for academic affairs andprovost, told UA News. “He is also abig-picture thinker who has developedmany creative relationships to growsuccessful programs.”
Marc Miller, dean of the UA’s JamesE. Rogers College of Law and chair ofthe Eller dean search committee, saidthe process was diffi cult due to Eller’scomplex nature.
Eller’s departments span a widerange of business-oriented concen-trations and expertise. Miller saidthe committee realized it needed acandidate who could be a sort of aca-
demic jack-of-all-trades. This turneda would-be quick search process intoone that spanned over a year.
“He was clearly a respected can-didate from the beginning, but therewere other very strong candidatesthroughout the entire process,” Millersaid. “And at each stage, what hap-
pened was that Paulo Goes emerged asthe strongest person.”
It was Goes’ peers – the reviews ofthose who had worked with him in thepast – that moved him to the top of thelist, Miller said. Goes was describedas a modest and thoughtful leader –capable of taking a college shining onnearly all fronts and pushing it towardeven further excellence.
Miller described Goes’ “thoughtful, cerebral and engaging” nature as whatconvinced him and the rest of the
committee.“I always marvel to look at our
students and how they develop andhow they do well,” Goes said of tran-sitioning into his new administrativerole. “So, I think from the students’perspective, we are in this business oftransformation. We take the studentsand we help them improve them-
selves. So that’s probably the most re-warding and exciting part of this job.”
This transformative attitude is notpurely sentimental; it also translatesinto the transformation the businessworld is going through. Business hasbecome a more digitally-inclinedrealm, and, to Goes, it is essential that
students are prepared for it.The digital revolution, as Goes calls
it, requires a curriculum across alldepartments that will make sense of amore digitally-oriented world. Depart-ments from finance to entrepreneur-ship are updating programming andthe way they teach classes.
Other significant Eller projectsalready underway include the newProfessional Development Center – a$3 million infill project that is trans-forming the existing south-facing
courtyard at McClelland Hall into atwo-story enclosed space.
Goes is excited to be a part of it all.“I think Eller has a very bright fu-
ture because I think that the skills thatprofessionals need, the knowledgethat organizations need in this newdigital world – we have all of thoseelements here.”

THE UNIVERSITY OF ARIZONA / SPRING 27
A T, C,P & F P
The University of Arizona has beencelebrating Family Weekend for 85years. The tradition began in 1929and went by the name of Mom’s andDad’s Day, and then Parent’s Day, andin 1992 became Family Weekend. This event took a two year break dur-ing World War II, and has not misseda year since. Family Weekend is theperfect opportunity to catch up with
your student, join in the spirit ofthe University and see the campusthrough the eyes of your student. There will be a variety of events onand off campus, offering familymembers a chance to explore thecampus experiencing what it meansto be a Wildcat academically whileexperiencing the campus culture andWildcat spirit.
Family Weekend 2016 will takeplace October 14th-16th. There will bea variety of scheduled events taking
place each day allowing family mem-bers an opportunity to experience thecampus and the city. Saturday is yourchance to show your Wildcat Spiritand cheer on our Pac12 football teamto a victory against the USC Trojans.
Tucsonans are proud to share theculture and rich history of South-ern Arizona, so be sure to catch anevent off campus and explore the OldPueblo. This small town promises tofill up quickly with family and friendsvisiting from around the world. Ifyou are interested in joining us,please make your reservations early.
From our perspective, the wordfamily has many definitions, and itno longer identifies itself with onemeaning or a “blood lineage.” A greatdefinition found in the dictionary is:“a group of people united by certainconvictions or a common affi liation.”So however you identify your family,we invite you to join us and share inthe Wildcat Spirit, meet other familymembers, and Bear Down, you won’twant to miss it.

You are also invited and encour-aged to participate through our Family& Guest Orientation program, whichis tailored to address the needs andconcerns of parents and other family
members. While your student registersfor classes, you have the opportunityto learn more about services to helpyour student succeed, meet staff fromacross campus, and find out how to getconnected and stay involved with theUniversity. Come prepared with your

placement activities is to help yourstudent succeed in their first semesterby ensuring they register for the levelof classes that matches their currentabilities and experience. All studentsshould complete placement require-ments at least seven business daysprior to their Orientation session.
The math placement exam con-sists of one of two tests based on yourstudent’s math experience: algebraor calculus. Students should read allinstructions and dedicate three hours
to testing. If your student has prior col-lege or AP credit, this information willbe accounted for in their placement.Students who do not complete theirmath placement will not be placed intomath classes or subject-dependentcourses such as science and statistics.
Through the Next Steps Center, yourstudent should complete the place-ment checklist items to determine ifthey also need to take a second lan-guage or writing assessment. Studentswill be asked about their experience,
provide information about prior andanticipated credits, and be promptedwith further instructions if an exam isneeded.
Please make sure your studentutilizes the Next Steps Center on aregular basis, so they are preparedto attend and thrive at New StudentOrientation.
