Going green

As part of the College’s commitment to the environment, we work hard to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill and closely monitor and manage the amount of energy and water different sites consume. Students and staff are encouraged to walk or cycle to work, and a free shuttle bus is provided by the College to help everyone commute between sites.

The College is proud to be a ‘Fairtrade College’ and, through its Fairtrade Policy, educates people on the benefits. We also support the campaign by selling Fairtrade items in catering outlets.

We use sustainability sourced ‘Forest Stewardship Council’ (FSC) certified paper and recycled paper products for printing all of our publications - including this directory!

University of Plymouth Colleges Faculty

City College Plymouth is one of the largest Partner Colleges within the University of Plymouth Colleges (UPC) Faculty. Plymouth University is consistently one of the top modern universities, rated in the top 350 of the most recent Times Higher Education World University Rankings. With a strong record of excellence, enterprise and innovation across its teaching and research activities, Plymouth is distinguished by its long-term engagement with employers. The University is one of the largest in the country, with around 30,000 students, a third of whom study at its 18 partner institutions via the UPC

Faculty. This partnership is nationally recognised as one of the largest, longest established and best-developed partner college networks in the country and brings university-level education to students across the South West.

The majority of City College Plymouth’s higher education courses are approved by Plymouth University and, therefore, students graduate with a Plymouth University award. Our foundation degree courses usually have at least one articulated progression route to an honours degree. These are often one year ‘top-up’ courses available at Plymouth University, or in some cases, another institution (please note

there is a deadline for progression applications and places may be subject to availability).

In terms of academic study, all UPC Faculty students have the same rights and status as other Plymouth University students. You will benefit from additional support and resources provided by the University, including its library, electronic resources and learning support materials through a web-based student portal. You will be a member of the University’s Students’ Union (UPSU) and through the College can access the University’s support and advice resources which form the ‘Student Gateway’.

If you are looking to get back into learning then consider our Access courses. The Access to Higher Education Diploma is a way of helping you get into university. Once completed, you can either go right ahead and apply for a university course, or you can take a year out to gain relevant work experience to support your higher education application. It can also be used for personal development or to prepare you for work. An Access course will help you to get to grips with the level of study and motivation you will need to succeed in higher education.

Return to Learn Course

Alternatively, we have a course that prepares you for entry to a range of College courses, covering essential core skills such as academic studies, English, maths and IT. Our Return to Learn course will refresh your existing skills and teach you how to plan and manage your learning.

It includes three stages, and on successful completion of each stage not only will you

be better prepared to embark on a more demanding course, but you will also be awarded a nationally recognised qualification.

If you already have some formal qualifications or credit accumulation and transfer scheme points, then take a look at our foundation degrees, higher national certificates, professional qualifications and university short courses.

Case StudyKatrina Ward“Completing the Access to Science course at the College allowed me to progress onto the Foundation Degree in Forensic Science. Having two young children made it hard for me to think about going back to college, and when I started the course I had little confidence. The Access to Science course was hard work, but definitely worth it. It covered a variety of different subjects and helped me to develop my academic skills.

“The support from the College’s staff, right from the first phone call, made the course really enjoyable. The teaching staff helped me to believe in my own ability to learn and succeed. The College has a really good reputation for foundation degrees and the positive experience I had doing the Access course encouraged me to go for it! My aim now is to top-up my foundation degree into an honours degree at Plymouth University. After that, I believe that I will be able to gain employment in the crime scene investigation field.”

Foundation degrees are two-year degree-level courses (when studied full-time) which are broadly equivalent to studying for the first two years of an honours degree at university. They are carefully designed and developed in collaboration with employers, and offer you the opportunity to combine academic study with the skills and attributes needed in the workplace.

Many of our foundation degree courses are also offered on a part-time basis. Studying for

a foundation degree on a part-time basis can provide greater flexibility and the opportunity to carry on with work whilst you study. Some employers will fund the course fees and provide time to study where the course is considered of relevance for their business. Many of our part-time foundation degrees are offered on an intensive two year basis, while others are over three years.

When you complete one of our courses and graduate with a Plymouth University award,

you will have the appropriate training and skills needed for success in industry and business; many also include professional qualifications. Foundation degrees are a qualification in their own right. Most foundation degrees have articulated progression routes to honours degrees. These are often one-year ‘top-up’ courses available at Plymouth University, or in some cases, another university or Partner College. Please note there is a deadline for progression applications and places may be subject to availability.

Case StudyKevin Ridgers“I am currently a Response Officer for the Devon and Cornwall Constabulary and I have been a Police Officer for approximately three years. I am convinced studying the Foundation Degree in Public Services at the College gave me the attributes I needed to fulfil my career ambition.

“The various lessons I studied helped me during my Police interview and throughout my career. The law module has proven to be very handy for my preparation for promotion too.

“Whilst at the College, the strong links with the Armed Forces and Emergency Services were obvious. We were often visited by representatives and were offered valuable work placements. The knowledge I obtained both in class and on placement meant that I already had an understanding of the job.”

What is the UCAS tariff?

It’s the conversion of further education, level 3 qualifications such as AS and A levels, VCEs, BTECs and OCRs etc, into one points system that universities can use to evaluate applications and make offers.

How does it work?

Each qualification and grade is worth a number of points. All grades and qualifications are added together to give a total tariff point score.

Don’t miss the deadlines

UCAS has a series of deadlines for students to meet, which you can find on their website - www.ucas.com. Deadlines are important - please make sure you know when to apply.

With so many students applying you are best to apply as early as possible, but it is never too late to apply to the College. We may have places available right up until September for courses starting that year.

Simply give us a call on 01752 305300 to check if we have space on the course of your choice, and if we can offer you a place we will take you through the application procedure.

You can find more information on the UCAS tariff tables on the UCAS website:www.ucas.com/students/ucas_tariff/.
