q Universities have some special offices to take
care of the needs of every international student.Specially assigned Polish students help newcomers
to adjust to their new environment.
q Phenomenon unique to Polands education
market is the large share of it in the hands of
private institutions of higher education. The
composition of the Polish market is comparable
to that in the USA. There are now about 310
privately owned universities and colleges in
Poland and 138 state schools of higher
learning. Thanks to high level of competition
the cost of studying is lower than in other
European countries.
Arthur Rubinstein about Chopins music:
Chopin was a genius of universal appeal. Hismusic conquers the most diverse audiences. When
the first notes of Chopin sound through the concert
hall there is a happy sigh of recognition. All over the
world men and women know his music. They love
it. They are moved by it. Yet it is not Romantic mu-
sic in the Byronic sense. It does not tell
stories or paint pictures. It is expressive and perso-
nal, but still a pure art. Even in this abstract atomic
age, where emotion is not fashionable, Chopin
endures. His music is the universal language of hu-
man communication. When I play Chopin I know
I speak directly to the hearts of people!
Did you knowThe International Frederick Chopin Piano
Competition is one of the oldest and most
prestigious events of this type in the world,
organized in Warsaw since 1927.Winning one of the prizes awarded at the Frede-
rick Chopin International Piano Competition
marks the beginning of a great artistic career and
opens a path to the most famous concert halls.
The Polish Chopin Competition brought fame to
such pianists as: Lev Oborin, Bella Davidovich,
Maurizio Pollini, Martha Argerich, Garrick
Ohlsson and Krystian Zimerman.
q Students who decide to study in Poland in
English can do so at one of more than 100institutions. These include universities,
technical universities, higher schools of
engineering, agricultural academies, academies
of economics and numerous other higher
vocational colleges and teacher training
colleges. HEIs in Poland emphasize the
application of scientific knowledge for future
professional needs. Strong focus is placed on
fundamental and applied research, as well as on
creative and artistic work.

First founded in 1364, the Jagellonian University has been anintegral part of Krakows life for almost 650 years. The Universitysimportance of the international scene dates back to the 15th centurywhen some 44% of the entire student population was coming fromabroad! Today, with its growing curriculum and course lists offered inforeign languages, the JU is once again drawing an increasing numberof the worlds best students to its ancient halls and modern campus.Being recognised worldwide, the JU is a member of the EuropeanUniversity Association, Coimbra Group and the Utrecht Network.
The academic level of the University is indicated by the fact thatalmost every faculty has received category 1, the highest, in the officialrankings of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education. Junioracademics and doctors from the Jagiellonian annually receive over
10% of the prestigious grants awarded by the Foundation for PolishScience in recognition of the level of their scientific research.Academics from the University are effective in their competition forgrants from European research programmes, and the University hasseveral European Centres of Excellence.
The ancient Jagiellonian University, covered with the moss ofcenturies, is simultaneously a young, innovative place. A new, moderncampus, called the Third Campus, between Zakrzwek andPychowice, is being built barely 4km from the centre of Cracow. In1999, the Research Centre for the Life Sciences was opened there, andin 2002 this was followed by the opening of the Institute of MolecularBiology and Biotechnology building, with the most up-to-datescientific and technological infrastructure in Poland, and the Instituteof Environmental Protection. One of the youngest Polish comprehensive universities
On September 3, 1999, the Sejm, or the lower house of the Polish
Parliament, enacted a law establishing a new university in Warsaw
the Cardinal Stefan Wyszyski University.
Since opening its doors, the Cardinal Stefan Wyszyski University
in Warsaw (or, UKSW for short) has steadily grown and is now
comprised of seven faculties and twenty-four fields of studies.
Programmes and Courses
The programmes are offered on a full-time (free-of-charge) and
part-time basis. There are both continuous programmes leading toa graduate degree, as well as programmes leading to an undergraduate
degree (Level one), and then to a graduate degree (Level two). UKSW
also offers post-graduate and PhD programmes for those who aspire to
improve their qualifications.
Most of the programmes and courses are certified by the University
Accreditation Commission and by the State Accreditation Committee
to prove top quality of education. Our students can benefit from
a study period abroad at more than 60 European universities as part
of the Erasmus programme, as well as domestic study periods at 18
Polish universities as part of the Mobile Students Program, or MOST.
Apart from a wide educational offer, the students can also take an
active part in a number of special interests groups, students

Great works are often inspired by a human dream. Such was, as quite
a number of the founders declare, the origin of Pultusk Academy of
Humanities (formerly: Pultusk School of Humanities), a school for
higher education opened in a small town, actively pursuing its statutory
activity and providing its students with quality education. The ATENA
Academic Education and Research Society, the founding body of
Pultusk School of Humanities, by making its successful attempt at
turning that idea into reality, over 10 years ago, made it possible for lots
of young people to o btain higher education.
The history of Pultusk Academy of Humanities is a continuation of the
history of Pultusk School of Humanities established on 14th July, 1994.
That was when the Minister of National Education entered the School
into the national Register of Higher Education Schools. It was also then
that the School was authorized to run undergraduate-level courses in the
following fields of study: Polish Language and Literature, History,
Education Studies. A year later (on 28th April, 1995) the Minister of
National Education authorized Pultusk School of Humanities to launch
courses in some other fields of study as well, i.e. in Administration,
Political Science, and Environmental Protection. On 30th September,
1996, the Minister of Education, under a resolution passed by the Main
Council for Higher Education dated 18th September, 1996, authorized
the School to run graduate degree programmes.

After graduation from a high school in
Moscow I enrolled at the Pultusk Academy of
Humanities. Choosing the school I took into
consideration the Academy had been winningfirst place in the rankings for some years. Once
I had arrived in Pultusk I was nicely surprised
by the number of departments and fields of
study, and highly professional teaching staff.
I also noticed modern, well equipped
buildings, and full computerised library. Activecooperation with foreign universities were
other reasons that convinced me.

For me, as a foreigner, a very important
matter, apart from the level of knowledge
acquired in the college, is also the
atmosphere of studying. What I mean are
the everyday relationships with friends
from the group, relationships with lecturersand college authorities and kindness
shown in the Deans office. In The
Ateneum I have found everything what
guarantees that I do not feel lonely. These
unique and lovely characteristics create an
emotional bond between me and my
