Exercise I [20 pts]: Forced oscillations. Resonance phenomena.
An elastic horizontal pendulum consists of a solid (S), of mass m = 200 g, attached to the end of a spring (R) of negligible
mass and of stiffness k, the other end of the spring being fixed. The centre of inertia G of the solid can move on a
horizontal axis (O, i
), O being the position of G when (S) is at equilibrium. A suitable device exerts on the pendulum an
exciting force of adjustable angular frequency . G starts to oscillate on both sides of O. At an instant t, the abscissa of G
is x and its velocity is v
= v i
= idt
dx ; the exciting force is then of the form F
= F i
= F 0 sin(t+) i
, of constant
amplitude F0 and the solid (S) is subjected to a friction force of the form f
= - h v
= - h v i
where h is a positive constant.
1) Show that the differential equation in x associated with the motion of the pendulum is of the form: 2
0
2
Fd x h dx k+ + x= sin(ωt+φ)
dt m dt m m.
2) In steady state, the solution of this differential equation is written as: x = Xmsin(t).
a) Deduce, by giving t two particular values, the expression of tan in terms of the data and show that the amplitude Xm
is given by: Xm = 0
2 2 2 2
F
h (k m ) .
b) By giving ω different values and by measuring, for each of these values, the corresponding value of Xm, we notice that
we obtain an amplitude resonance phenomenon.
i) Determine the expression of the corresponding resonance angular frequency r in terms of the data.
ii) Draw the shape of the amplitude resonance curve for two different values of h.
3. a) Determine the expression of v.
b) Deduce the expression of the amplitude Vm of v in terms of the data.
c) i) Determine the resonance angular frequency ω0 of Vm.
ii) Draw the shape of the resonance curve of the amplitude Vm for two
different values of h.
4. We give each of the quantities ω, h and k a particular value. Using an
appropriate device, we perform, in steady state, the recording of F and x; the
curves (1) and (2) represent respectively the variation of F and x as a function
of time, where a vertical division represents a force of 0.3 N and a
displacement of 1 cm and a horizontal division represents 30 ms. Referring to the curves:
a) Determine the expressions of F and x;
b) Determine the values of k and h.
Exercise II [22 pts]: Different roles of a coil
A. Opening and closing of the injector of a car
An electromagnet, formed of a coil, is used to control the opening and closing
of the injector in the modern car engines. This coil can also be used as a metal
detector. In this exercise, we are interested to determine the inductance L of
the coil.

Figure 1
To determine the inductance L of the coil of negligible resistance, we carry out the circuit of figure 1. The used generator
delivers, across its terminals, a triangular asymmetrical voltage ug. The resistance of (R) is equal to 1.0 k. A suitable
system allows us to obtain the curves of figure 2 which represent the variation of the voltage uR = uBM across (R) and that
of the voltage uL= uAB across the coil as a function of time.
1. How did we obtain the curve uL by using the recorded voltages on the channels YA and YB?
2. a) Give the expression of uL in terms of uR.
b) i) Referring to figure 2, determine the value of the inductance L in each of the two intervals t and t'.
ii) The manufacturer announces L 2.0 H. Comment on briefly the two values obtained of L by accepting a relative
variation of absolute value 10%.
B. Effect of iron on the inductance
The set up used is that of figure 1, where we replace the generator by an ideal one of
emf E = 3.2 V.
Using an appropriate device, we record the variation of the voltage uR = uBM as a
function of time. The origin of time is taken at the instant when the switch K is
closed.
1. Derive, at an instant t, the differential equation in uR.

Given: c = 2.998108 m/s ; h = 6.62610-34Js; 1 eV = 1.6010-19 J.
The Balmer series consists of visible spectral lines and others lying in the ultraviolet domain. The wavelength of the first
line Hα is 656.2 nm, that of the second Hβ is 486.1 nm, that of the third Hγ is 434.0 nm, and so on. The wavelength of the
limiting spectral line of this series is 364.6 nm.
1. Calculate, in eV, the energy of a photon associated with the limiting spectral line of Balmer series.
2. Determine the energy of the starting level and that of the arrival level.
B- Photoelectric effect
The potassium cathode (C) of a photoelectric cell has a useful surface area S = 2.00 cm2. The cathode, whose work
function is W0 = 2.20 eV, receives radiations from a hydrogen point source placed at a distance D = 1.25 m which radiates
uniformly in all directions, a power PS = 2.00 W.
1. Calculate the threshold wavelength of the potassium cathode.
2. Which are, among the Balmer series spectral lines, the radiations able to produce a photoelectric
emission?
3. The maximum kinetic energy of an emitted electron is quantized. Why?
4. Using a filter, we illuminate the cathode with the blue light H. The emf E of the generator is
adjusted to allow the anode collecting all the electrons emitted by the cathode whose quantum
efficiency is rq = 0.875%.
a) Show that the radiant power P0 received by the cell is equal to 2.0410-5 W.
b) Determine the number N0 of the incident photons on the cathode in one second;
c) Determine the current I0 carried by the circuit.
5. We switch off the lamp, at an instant chosen as the origin of time t0 = 0. The power received by (C), at an instant t, is
then written as: P = P0e-50 t.
a) Determine:
i) The number dn of the electrons emitted by (C) between the instants t and t+dt;
ii) The variation dq of the charge carried by the circuit between the instants t and t+dt;
b) Deduce the expression of the current i carried by the circuit at the instant t;

Part I: Reading Comprehension
You are going to read an article about The Importance of Education. When you are through, answer the questions that
follow.
See the World in a Different Light
1. Today, education has become more of a privilege than a right. More wealthy families afford degrees at fancier
universities, while families in terrible poverty can only afford minimum education as provided by the public school system.
Do you know that regardless of the stature of the school you went to, it’s your attitude about the knowledge and skills
you’re given that counts? Yes, you may be schooled in the most prestigious and reputable school there is, but if you are not
naturally inquisitive, and if you are just on the receiving end of education, there’s the beginning of stagnation. If, on the
other hand, you are schooled in a meager town public school, yet with every lesson, you ask the questions and do
independent research, and then you’re on your way to becoming truly educated.
2. Why is there a need to be educated anyway? Is it a means for survival? Is it similar to food, shelter, clothing, or money?
Well, in these changing times, I dare say that yes, it is a means for survival. You wouldn’t survive this world’s information
boom if you do not possess critical thinking characteristics of educated people. Indeed, education may be considered as a
means to view the world in its real context, with layers of meaning embedded in its every little shade, corner, or gap. You
don’t want to be clueless for the challenges that lie ahead. You have to have an opinion for every issue there is. But how to
do that, when you do not exert any effort to learn? You cannot give what you do not have. You cannot help solve the ills if
this world if you cannot critically reflect on reality. You cannot make sense of your own life if you have not practiced doing
so in various academic exercises found only in formal education.
3. Imagine life without knowing and mastering reading, listening, writing, and speaking. How will you comprehend the
world from the minutest to the most global of issues? How will you interpret, when you have not heard? How will you jot
down your insights when you haven’t mastered the art of taking down meaningful notes? How will you express your
opinions when you haven’t based these on anything?
4. Education makes you understand and helps you be understood as well. It is also hoped that through education, you are
moved to act upon understanding. I am saddened when I hear of kids who do not take their education seriously. Not
deliberately, of course, but children who lack interests in their studies are more likely to be unaware of the value of
education in their lives. I am indeed thankful for the opportunities afforded for me to become properly educated. The youth
will realize the value of studying soon, so that they, too, can make a significant difference in society through their actions.
5. When circumstances prevent the youth from enrolling in schools at all, still, windows of opportunities exist for them. Try
to read, read, and read! Ask the questions, from the dumbest to the smartest queries. Find yourself a mentor to guide your
journey. Actively listen to intelligent media, and ask the hows and the whys. Do not accept all information from media as
absolute truths; learn to sift and be critical about the beliefs you wish to uphold and value. Regularly express your thoughts
through fluid writing and speaking. Act decently educated by holding on to good values. These are just some tips to youth
who find it hard to go to schools. There is no reason for you not to cultivate your mind and learn. You just need to make the
most of what you do have, and innovate for the rest.
6. Indeed, education is a necessity to survive and excel in living in today’s modern world. Grab all the opportunities you can
to learn, because education is a fun, lifelong process!
