It is believed that the manufacture of these traditional fabrics dates back to the fifteenth century (Alcobaça city). Gil Vicente (1465–1536), play writer and poet who is considered to be the father of Portuguese dramatists, makes reference to these fabrics in his literary work ‘Farsa dos Almocreves’ (1527). The Chintz fabrics embody an intense and fruitful relation between Europe and India, around the 1500s. The first manufacture of printing on cotton in Portugal was born out of the combination of both English and Dutch influences in 1690. However, the first private initiative factory was founded in 1774 in the town of Alcobaça, and was later managed by the Board of Directors Factories of the UK (1779). From the late 18th century to the last quarter of the 19th century other factories were also established in Alcobaça, some of which are currently located in Tomar. For example, the Alcobaça Company of Wiring and Tissues, which was established in 1875, survived until the mid 20th century. The national printing industry has taken an important role in Portuguese exports in the 18th and 19th centuries. A decree was published in 1785 that prohibited the establishment of manufactures in Brazil in order to stimulate and ensure the production in Portugal and also minimize the English competition. Later, John V decided Brazilian ports would open “to all friendly nations” ending the Portuguese monopoly.
