3. Details of Chapter activities since last report.

As we enlisted in our previous activities report, the following activities were done:

Participation in congresses

IONS- North America Conference September 24-27, 2009.

For the first time, the International OSA Network of Students took place on North America. The University of Maryland planed 3 days of activities for students from all over the world, students from Russia, Italy, England, USA and, of course, Mexico. Two of our members could be part of this event. Attending to the Army Research Laboratory, listening to technical and non-technical talks by international researchers like:

Jean-Luc Doumont

Kiki L’Italien, from OSA Student Services

Dr. William D. Phillips, Nobel Prize laureate

Dr. Thomas M. Baer, 2009 president of OSA As part of the program, Jorge Sanchez participated on the poster session, presenting his work on a correlator and on September 25th they presented the SPIE Student Chapter from the University of Guadalajara to members of all the Student Chapters attending to the event. Hugo and Jorge had the chance to meet students like Leonardo Montilla and Stefano Young, members of the Arizona Chapter and organizers of the second IONS-NA and researchers such as Carlos Lopez Mariscal, Mexican researcher and part of OSA, who encouraged and helped our chapter to become a SPIE/OSA chapter.

VII Symposium of Optics in industry September 10-12, 2009. Attendants: 76 (registered)

Our chapter supported the organizers of the VII Symposium of Optics in Industry along the year and the chapter helped as staff in the event on September 10-12 and in its workshops as well.

Jorge Sánchez, Hugo Beltrán, Lina Aguilar and Jaime Ramírez participated on the poster session in the symposium with the works Spatial integrating joint transform correlator for pattern recognition by use of a Ronchi ruling filter, Sensor óptico de corriente monitoreado por medio de LabVIEW, System Simulation of Fabry-Perot cavities in a Michelson interferometer and Interferometría en ondas gravitacionales, respectively.

We used the Visiting Lecturer Program to bring Dr. Alan R. Kost as a lecturer in the Symposium with the lecture <<Advanced concepts of photovoltaics>>, who also spent some time with the student chapters during the event.

Attendance at the Biomedical Optics School in Puebla June 21-25, 2010

Antonio Navarro attended to this event that was organized by the INAOE and that was aimed at undergraduate, master’s and doctorate in physics, mathematics and engineering, the area of health and related areas.

The invited speakers were

• Joseph A. Izatt. Optical Coherence Tomography: Principles and Applications. • Scott Prahl. Optical Scattering Standards. • Daniel Gareau. Confocal Microscopy: Theory and Practice. • Irving Bigio. Scattering Spectroscopy: Applications to medical diagnostics. • Igor Meglinski. Computational Modeling of Radiative Transfer: Application for non-invasive diagnostics of skin. • Raman Kashyap. New Modalities for Coherence Tomography.

Daniel Gareau’s speech was one of the most inspiring because he has ability to speak to younger generations, his topic was about the confocal microscopy which is a technique used to increase optical resolution and contrast of a micrograph by using point illumination.

The Raman Kashyap technical talk showed what students were trying to do for simulating the characteristics of an eye.

Irving J. Bigio talked about optical coherence tomography that is an optical signal acquisition and processing method. The use of relatively long wavelength light allows penetrating into the scattering medium, this is a similar to confocal microscopy but penetrates more deeply into the sample.

This was a good opportunity for knowing more about optics applications in medicine and it is important to our chapter because half of the members are studying biomedical engineering.

Science workshop for kids January 15, 2010 Attendants: about 40

In January 2010 we decided to invite two groups of elementary school and a couple of teachers to get the kids to be interested in optics and science by doing catchy activities of different scientific topics of physics, chemistry and optics.

At the organic chemistry laboratory the children mixed substances and learnt about chemical reactions and some of their properties, such as change of color.

In the physics laboratory a couple of our chapter members showed and explained after the kids did a wide variety of experiments that included electromagnetism, sound, pressure, temperature, etc.

At optics laboratory our chapter members explained different concepts of optics to the children, who did different activities and made experiments to comprehend these ideas.

After performing all the activities some of the materials used were given as gifts for the children in a contest.

For the second workshop we invited three groups of elementary school and we performed with help of the kids the activities of physics and optics, with some new activities of optics.

Children gained knowledge about different optics subjects that went from what light is and basic colors to interferometry and how the eyes function to acquire real world images by using 3D glasses.

Just as in the first workshop, we made a quick contest at the end and gave to the kids some of the material that was used in the workshop along with other presents.

Also we gave them a tour in the campus and showed them some of the new projects of optics researchers in our university.

Conferences

The capacity of feeling and touching by distance: tele-robotics. Dr. Emmanuel Nuño Ortega. March 12, 2010. Attendants: 148

In this conference, Dr. Nuño gave a brief introduction of robot teleoperation systems, their applications, their nature and mainly the control algorithms that are capable of providing stability even though there are delays on the communications between the robots.

Also there were presented the last results of this researcher, which were presented on the IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation in this year.

Edge enhacement and image segmentation on real time. Dr. Jorge Luis Flores Núñez. March 19, 2010. Attendants: 70

On the second conference, Dr. Flores talked about an optical method to enhance the edge detection using LCD´s and how this system can be able to perform real-time segmentation on moving images. He explained how this method could be potentially useful on image processing thanks to its robustness, because this setup doesn´t need coherent illumination or high precision on the alignment. Before this conferences started, people from the university newspaper interviewed to Dr. Flores and also to members from our chapter. Some days later we found out that this conference was publish at the campus website.

In this conference, Dr. Anaya talked about how the rapidity of the Geometric SVM lets their application for the solution of problems of robotics such as artificial learning (pattern recognition), following trajectories and recurrent systems for processing dynamic input data, prediction of time series and robotic navegation in discreet labytinths.

Optics is everywhere April 30, 2010. Attendants: 63

For the final conference we asked Dr. Torales if he could give a non technical talk, something more informative about optics, its fields and projects he is into. He made a really funny and outgoing conference, interacting with the audience, making of this conference something different from previous talks. We also encouraged our new members Abril and Ricardo to give an introduction to the talk explain the kind of things we make on the chapter and the benefits of

being a SPIE Student member. With this we are trying to prepare the new members for the following years, where they are going to manage the chapter.

Chapter meetings

We had several meetings along the year, in which we mostly discussed details of the activities before they were carried out, we analyzed the results so we could make some improvements in our performance and we defined responsibilities among the group and proposed different activities for next year too.

In order to have a better relationship and communication among members we have some social meetings, such a welcome party, a Christmas party and another party to celebrate our joining the OSA as a new student chapter. Also we went to play paintball so we could relax after the scholar cycle.

The Chapter in the web

Facebook

As a part of a modern society, the chapter created a group on Facebook, a place where everybody could be able to see all the activities we do. On this group we upload the photos from our activities, display the ultimate news of the chapter, advertising for future activities and some other things that help the chapter into the eyes of the students.

Website

We updated our website and its link is

Polo shirts

To improve the image of the chapter, we decided to create some polo shirts for all the members and advisors, incorporating the logos from the SPIE student chapter and the OSA Student chapter as well as some logos from our university.

These shirts were a complete success because into our activities it was easier for people to know who was a part of our chapter.
