Universal words are words that appear the same in many languages. Often they are loan words from

english or another language that has influenced thought or define a new cultural paradigm. Often they

are called cognates. They can come from many areas. Hamburger is one example from the food area.

Angst and zen are examples from Philosophy. Many words creap into our languages throughtechnology. Because our world is global and we are connected economically and through the internet,

universal words are becoming increasingly more prevalent. Here is a text I wrote using some common

universal words:

The weather has been very hot in our area. I wanted to escape the heat, so I put on my favorite bikini.

Then I made some ice tea, sat down to watch TV, and turned the air-conditioner up high. But something

was wrong with the TV antenna and the reception was bad. So I went to the airconditioned cinema.

For a snack I froze a banana and a chocolate bar. I cut them into individual bite-sized pieces and put

them in a container with a few other items to bring to the movie theater. It was too hot to walk, so I

took an air-conditioned taxi.

I bought my ticket at the window and felt the delicious cold air from the cinema escape outside as I

opened the door. Once inside the lobby, I decided I needed an extra dose of cold, so I ordered an icecold bottle of mineral water from the concession stand.

I was sure that I would enjoy the movie because the focus was on the drama in the animal kingdom.Man versus beast is a universal theme in such movie greats as Planet of the Apes and Jurassic Park.

This movie took place in a virtual world, created by a future race. The individuals' will was

subordinated to the greater social order, similar to an Orwellian utilitarian society. Athough man was

subdued by drugs in his food supply, the animals still had their original, natural vigor.

An animal escaped from the Reservation, an area for raising the animals organically for human

consumption. He had contracted a contagious disease and needed to be exterminated to minimize thespread of contamination in the food supply. The situation was grave, and one man used his intelligence

to outsmart the dangerous animal, which posessed super human strength.

The man used music to lure the animal into a clearing. The animal was as if hypnotized by the alluring

melodies of Verdi's opera. Once the animal was rendered docil by the opera, the man shot it with a

virus spray he developed, which proved terminal to his prey. Local law enforcement decided to sendall the other animals through a portal to an orbital satellite for quarentine, as a precautionary measure

until their disease status could be determined.

The plot was not very original, but the special effects were superb and seemed very real. I enjoyed themovie immensely, and when I got home, I asked my father to fix the TV antenna.
