Students will use information sources found in libraries, textbooks, and in attractions at Universal Studios Hollywood. Materials: Dinosaur Word Maze – Page 3 Dichotomous Key – Page 4 Dinosaur Cut & Paste Activity– Page 5 Dinosaur Identification Chart – Page 6 INTO ACTIVITY Introduce students to the Jurassic period of the world’s time-line. Present different types of creatures living during this period by using pictures, filmstrips and charts. Students locate the different dinosaurs on the Dinosaur Word Maze Activity. Introduce the terms “herbivore” and “carnivore.” Discussion topics might include: What word does the word “herbivore” have inside? (Herb) What is an “herb?” (A plant or vegetable) What would an herbivore like to eat for dinner? (A salad, vegetables, plants, etc.) Let’s look at an herbivore or plant-eater. (Show a picture of a Brachiosaurus.) EXTRA RESOURCE If access to the movie Jurassic Park ® is available, cue the video Jurassic Park to the scene with the children and the paleontologist in the tree for the night. List characteristics of herbivores: 1. Long necks to reach leaves high in treetops 2. Small flat teeth 3. Slow, easy strides when walking 4. Small head and jaw Students classify the dinosaurs listed using the Dichotomous Key Activity. Students experience Jurassic Park® – The Ride where they encounter different classifications ofdinosaurs. During the ride, students consider which dinosaurs seem calm and tranquil. Students notethe characteristics of the herbivores they encounter. Students visit the performance of Animal PlanetLive, and compare today’s animals to extinct creatures.**

Classroom AssignmentStudents list the carnivore characteristics they observed:

Students complete a lesson using the Dinosaur Cut and Paste Activity and the Dinosaur Identification Chart.
