Universal Precaution Kit (UPK) / Phatarawut T. / BKKOT / 28JUL11 Universal Precaution Kit (UPK) Introduction To comply with the regulations of Thai Department of Civil Aviation, Thai Airways is to install Universal Precaution Kit (UPK) on all aircraft by August 2011. The purpose of the UPK is to provide the protection of cabin crew member when dealing with infectious fluid which is potentially infectious cases of suspected communicable disease such as blood, urine, vomit or faeces. The universal precaution kit contains items required by ICAO for proper safety protocol in the cabin described below. Content One UPK consists of: 1 x Absorbent powder 1 x Disinfectant cleaner 1 x Bonded wipe 1 x Disinfectant wipe 1 x Pair of disposable gloves 1 x Pair of polythene oversleeves 1 x Scoop/scraper 1 x Face/eye mask 1 x Apron 1 x Yellow biohazard bag 1 x Instruction Universal Precaution procedures When facing with potentially infectious cases of suspected communicable disease, cabin crew members should: 1. Encourage the injured person to attend to his/her injuries as much as possible providing paper towels, tissues, etc. if practicable. 2. Carry out the UPK from the location stated in Technical Equipment Checklist and: 2.1 Put on protective apron, gloves, oversleeves and face/eye mask.

2.2 Sprinkle absorbent powder liberally over spill area. 2.3 Remove gelled liquid using scoop and scraper. Dispose of gel, scoop

and scraper into yellow biohazard bag. 2.4 Spray the area with disinfectant cleaner and wait for 2 minutes. Then

clean the area with bonded wipe. Repeat once. 2.5 Place soiled wipes and empty disinfectant cleaner bottle into yellow

biohazard bag. 2.6 Remove protective clothing carefully and place in yellow biohazard

bag. Dispose of bag safely, preferably by incineration. 2.7 Wipe hands using disinfectant wipe and dispose of wipe and

instruction into suitable waste bin. 3. Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water. 4. Contact the custodial staff for cleaning and disinfecting all soiled surfaces. 5. When the UPK is used, a cabin log entry shall be made by In-flight Manager/Air Purser indicating the purpose of use and requesting for replacement.
