    COURSE DESCRIPTION:

    UNIV 101 is a course, in which students assess and develop the personal,intellectual and social skills necessary to succeed in college. Time management,study skills, goal clarification, career concerns, and college resources will beincluded. This course is available to FRESHMANonly.

    COURSE REQUIREMENTS:

    This course continues new student orientation and encourages studentsuccess/retention by (1) showing methods for developing a support system of faculty,staff and other students; (2) encouraging students to take responsibility for theirown education through study skills, time management, and use of universitycatalogues; (3) showing students how to use resources made available by theuniversity; (4) familiarizing students with the local community environment; (5)encouraging students to become involved in various university activities; and (6)

    familiarizing students with information appropriate and specific to success atEmbry-Riddle Aeronautical University.

    LEARNING OUTCOMES:

    Upon course completion, students will be able to:1. Name members of a support group of peers, and at least one faculty member,

    academic advisor, or professional staff member who can provide appropriateadvice and support.

    2. Practice efficient study skills (note taking, textbook reading, listening,memory, test taking, class participation, and group work).

    3. Practice efficient time management4. Effectively use university catalogues, advisement, and the university

    registration system.5. Identify the location and purpose of various Embry-Riddle campus resources.6. Provide an overview of the local community environment and available

    services.7. Identify activities that can enhance the college experience (university and

    community entertainment, sports, clubs, and organizations).8. Discuss methods for achieving success in your degree program.9. Provide an overview of aviation history and career opportunities and

    requirements.

    GRADING PROCEDURES:

    Attendance:

    Class attendance is required! If you miss a class you are responsible for the workdue and assigned on that day. You will receive an Attendance/Class ParticipationGrade that will be a combination of your actual input toward class discussion andparticipation in class activities

    More than 2 unexcused absences will result in a grade reduction. More than 3unexcused absences will result in a failure grade for the course.

    Class Assignments:

    Daily assignments will be given as an opportunity for you to prepare written ideasin a summery format. And will be given throughout the semester.

    Discussion Questions:

    Answers should be at least one page in length typed. The questions will be gradedwith respect to the seriousness and honesty with which you approach the excise.Not graded on spelling, grammar, and punctuation.

    Final Project:

    A major project will be assigned and the details will be recapped in a handoutdistributed in class. As a requirement of the course, a student must complete therequirements of the project as determined by the instructor.

    Exams:

    There is a midterm and final exam. Tests will be determined by me, but tend to bea combination of multi-choice and short essay format. All exams scores are notcurved and raw score will be used. The final exam will be on the last day of class.

    Additionally, it is my practice not to have make-up exams. However, circumstancesdo occur which may make it necessary. I reserve the exclusive right to approve amake-up exam. You are required to contact me for my approval prior to thescheduled exam to obtain permission for a make-up exam. Finally, the make-upexam will be different from the regular exam through format and style.

    Nothing is implied from this course syllabus that the course requirements andprocedures stated cannot be reasonably changed given a proper notice, at thediscretion of the course instructor.

    The Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University is committed to intellectual integrity

Such offences includingcheating (accepting unauthorized assistance in preparing assignments), fraud(gaining unfair advantage through deceit, trickery, or falsification of records), orplagiarism taking the ideas, writing, words, and/or work of another andrepresenting them as ones own without appropriate acknowledgment). A studentwho cheats, commits any form of academic fraud, or plagiarizes in this course willreceive an F for the course. In addition, the incident will be reported to the Dean ofStudents.

    Academic Integrity

    Embry-Riddle is committed to maintaining and upholding intellectual integrity. Allstudents, faculty, and staff have obligations to prevent violations of academicintegrity and take corrective action when they occur. The adjudication process mayresult in sanctions being imposed on students who commit the following academicviolations, which may include a failing grade for the course, suspension, ordismissal from the University.

    1. Plagiarism: Presenting as ones own the ideas, words, or products of another.Plagiarism includes use of any source to complete academic assignments withoutproper acknowledgement of the source. Reuse or resubmission of a students owncoursework if previously used or submitted in another course, is considered self-

    plagiarism, and is also not allowed under University policy.

    2. Cheating is a broad term that includes the following:

    Giving or receiving help from unauthorized persons or materials during

    examinations.

    The unauthorized communication of examination questions prior to,

    during, or following administration of the examination.

    Collaboration on examinations or assignments expected to be individualwork.

    Fraud and deceit, that include knowingly furnishing false or misleadinginformation or failing to furnish appropriate information when requested,such as when applying for admission to the University.
