The History of SankofaAs participants arrived for Women’s History Month Opening Ceremonies, they were given a chance to share their experience during this month’s celebration. Each woman expressed why she is a phenomenal on a banner. The theme of this year’s celebration is “Phenomenal Woman”, inspired by the moving poem written by Maya Angelou. A cheerful opening address by the Vice Chair of the University of Miami Chapter of Strong Women Strong Girls (SWSG), Adaeze Ajoku, was followed by a reading of Ms. Angelou’s poem, voiced by the chair of The UM SWSG chapter, Ajiah Daley. The keynote speaker, Rhea Beck, is the Executive Director of the South Florida Branch of Strong Women Strong

Girls. Her words of wisdom left the audience feeling motivated to conquer today’s issues facing women. She gave a moving testimonial of her childhood and interactions with phenomenal women in her life who helped shaped her into the woman she has become today. The night of celebration ended with an anonymous shar-ing of the states written on the banner by the phenomenal woman in attendance.

“One message I took away from the event is that “Phenomenal Woman” is not a poem of inspiration. It tells my story and many others. I will not read it and hope to be that woman, I will read it and remember I am that woman.” - Ajiah Daley.

Condoleezza Rice was the first female African-American Secretary of State.

The MSA Spotlight: Women’s History Month! As recently as the 1970’s, women’s history was virtually an unknown topic in the K-12 curriculum or in general public consciousness. In 1979, the week of March 8th was chosen as the focal point of the observance and President Carter issued the first Presidential Proclamation declaring the week of March 8th 1980 as National Women’s History Week. By 1986, 14 states had declared March as Women’s History Month(WHM). This momentum and state-by-state action was used as the rationale to lobby Congress to declare the entire month of March 1987 as National Women’s History Month. In 1987, Congress declared March as National Women’s History Month in perpetuity. For more information on WHM, visit www.nwhp.org/whm/history.
