The newsletter is designed to inform the University community about programs and activities for African, Hispanic, Asian and Native American students. In addition, the newsletter includes information on scholarships, internships and other resources that are beneficial to the University's diverse student community.

Heart Saver CPR with AEDDeadline February 14

Heart Saver CPR with AED teaches CPR and relief of choking in adults, children, and infants, as well as use of barrier devices for all ages. Optional: infant CPR and choking; adult, child, and infant CPR with mask. Participants will also learn how to use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). The class is Wednesday, February 15, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The cost is $20 for student members, $30 for non-student members and $40 for non-members. Black Awareness MonthThis February, United Black Students, partnered with the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs, presents Foot-steps: Walk This Way To Learn About Diversity. During Black Awareness Month 2011 is bringing back the annual events that University of Miami students know and love. Black Awareness Month, commonly referred to as BAM by students, is the University’s version of Black History Month, which was created as “Negro History Week” in 1926. The creator, Carter G. Woodson, chose February to coincide with the birthdays of Frederick Douglas and Abraham Lincoln, two crucial contributors in the progression of Black people in America. An intoxicat-ing spice blend coats the Wild Shrimp with Forbidden Rice from local celebrity Chef Allan Susser. Red Curry Quinoa will expand your side dish repertoire. We will top off the menu with a traditional Thai pineapple mango upside down cake. Égalité for All: Investing in Haiti’s Cultural HeritageThursday, February 17, 2011

6:00 pm, Little Haiti Cultural CenterThe University of Miami’s Center for Latin American Studies (CLAS) and Florida International University’s Latin American and Caribbean Center (LACC) are teaming up once again. The two Centers along with the University of Miami Libraries and Florida International University Libraries are hosting a benefit community screening of the PBS-produced documentary, Égalité for All: Toussaint Louverture and the Haitian Revolution in support of the Universities Protecting Haitian Patrimony Initiative (PHPI). The screening will take place on February 17, 2011 at the Little Haiti Cultural Center located at 260 NE 59th Terrace, Little Haiti. The Film will begin at 6:00pm, followed by special guest appearances and remarks by Edwidge Danticat (featured in the Film), alongside other members of the South Florida Haitian Community. This event is open to the public for a minimum donation of $25.00, all of which will go to the PHPI’s partner organizations in Haiti. Freeman Indonesia Nonprofit Internship Program Application deadline: March 1, 2011

The Freeman Indonesia Nonprofit Internship Program (FINIP), funded by the Freeman Foundation and admin-istered by the Institute of International Education, aims to develop student leaders and strengthen the nonprofit sector in Indonesia. IIE will select and pair 10 Indonesian students pursuing U.S. degrees with 10 U.S. undergrad-uates and arrange internships for them to work together in an Indonesian nonprofit organization. The 9-week experience, from June 15 to August 13, 2011, arranged by IIE’s partner organization, the Indone-sian International Education Foundation (IIEF), will take place in three cities: Bandung, Malang and Yogyakarta. All program-related costs will be covered.Interested American and Indonesian sophomores and juniors enrolled in U.S. institutions are encouraged to ap-ply, using the online application at http://www.iie.org/programs/finip . The Minority Students in Health Careers Motivation Program Application deadline March 8th

The Minority Students in Health Careers Motivation Program (MSHCMP) aims to build diversity in the health and allied health pro¬fessions, especially medicine, by providing students from underrepre¬sented backgrounds an opportunity to develop the skills necessary to successfully compete for admission to schools in these fields designed to be a mini first-semester medical education experience, this full-time, seven-week residential program exposes participants to classroom instruction in select basic science courses in the medical education curriculum and offers physician-shadowing opportuni-ties. Great attention is placed on identifying and removing any barriers that may prevent a participant from being a com-petitive medical school applicant. Workshops develop skills for preparing strong admissions and financial aid applications. Each participant leaves the program with a realistic appraisal of his or her readiness for medical school.

ELIGIBILITY:The program is open to college juniors or seniors, as well as recent college graduates, who aspire to apply to health profession schools, especially medicine. Applicants must have had organic chemistry in order to handle the course material. The admission committee chooses the top 25 students who demonstrate that they will benefit from participation and are likely to be competitive applicants for medical school. Other criteria include: Citizen or permanent resident of the United States Must be one of the following: – African American/Black – Hispanic/Latino – Multi-ethnic Must also be one of the following: – Matriculating student who has completed at least two years of undergraduate science or premed training – Recent science or premed graduate (post-baccalaureate) – Matriculating unclassified graduate student in science or in pre-health profession education Minimum science and cumulative GPA of 2.8 on a 4.0 system

Fulbright Grants for Summer 2011 Programs in the UK Application deadline: Friday April 15, 2011 by 5pm (UK Time).

Spend Summer 2011 in the UK!The US-UK Fulbright Commission offers three Special Summer Programmes for US citizens to come to the UK. These summer programmes provide the opportunity for US undergraduates (aged over 18), who have com-pleted no more than two years of university study, to come to the UK on a four, five or six week academic and cultural summer programme. Participants in these programmes will get the opportunity to experience an excit-ing academic programme at a highly regarded UK University, explore the culture, heritage and history of the UK and develop their academic ability by improving presentation, research and communication skills.

There are three Summer Programmes available for US students in 2011;• Fulbright Commission Newcastle University Summer Institute • Fulbright Commission Roehampton University London Summer Institute • Fulbright Commission Wales Summer Institute

Note: The program is open to students in all courses of study.The majority of the participant costs will be covered. Were you a Horizons Participant? Do you want to assist new students in their journey at the U? Then…Be a Horizons Counselor! You can help our newest multicultural students learn about the University of Miami and become better acclimated to the campus community. Horizons takes place the day before New Student Ori-entation, for more information, please visit www.miami.edu/orientation . Counselors will be responsible for interacting with new students and their families. Responsibilities include:1. Serve as a guide and mentor to new multicultural students.2.
