UNITED WESTANDFour years. 48 months. 1462 days. No matter how you put it, it’s been a long time since teams battled it out for the chance to call themselves Unity Cup champions. But as they say, good things come to those who wait – and let me be the first to tell you: the 2012 edition of the Unity Cup is a VERY good thing.

As awesome as the inaugural version of tournament was back in 2008, we knew that there’s always room for improvement. We wanted to make sure that this year’s was even better, so key partnerships were established to help build the event into some-thing bigger…

A BIG thank-you to Max’s Restaurant for headlining the tournament this year, as ev-eryone’s favourite Filipino restaurant stepped up in a big way to make everything pos-sible. If you don’t know why they call it “The House that Fried Chicken Built”, do yourself a favour and check it out personally!

Flip through the program and take a look around the gym, there’s no doubt that the Unity Cup is all about creating an experience you won’t find at any other basketball tournament. It takes a lot of planning and hard work to execute on something like this, so let’s get the self-props out of the way and congratulate 25-for-Life and All-In on a job well done.

But we all know that it’s the competition that brings us together and ultimately it’s basketball-first here at Unity Cup. So we did our best to recruit some of the best teams available and put money where our mouth is. Bragging rights are great, but prize money brings out the serious ballers. This year’s champions won’t only get to go home with the hardware, but their pockets will be a bit fatter too. No one wants to go home empty-handed.

So let’s take this unique opportunity to showcase our skills, create new rivalries or build upon old ones, and compete to see who will earn the title of Unity Cup Champions. Though our passion for ball runs deep and tempers will truly be tested, we trust that everyone will play within the guidelines of sportsmanship and fair play. After all, we’re all here for the love of the game.

We can’t thank-you enough for supporting the Unity Cup and we all look forward to a weekend of amazing basketball action!

Ball Above All.

Team Profiles

Quickly rising to be one of the top Asian teams in the GTA, this team has won more Asian tournaments than any other team in Toronto over the past year. With a great drive-and-kick game, this team keeps opponents on their heels at all times and will bury teams with its long range bombers. Strong guard play will determine this team’s success.

Team Profiles

Traditionally known as a tough physical team in the Filipino basketball com-munity, this team has reloaded with an infusion of talented youth to comple-ment its scrappy veterans. Speed and toughness is this team’s forte. They performed very well in the Asian leagues in Toronto finishing in the top-4 in both Fil-Act and Phil-Can this year.

Stemming from the winning tradition of the Celtics, Red Sox and Patriots, Bos-ton MASAE is coming from Beantown with nothing less but championship aspirations. Potential Tournament All-Star Jamaal Brooks is the focal point of this squad, but look for Vinny Cheah’s steady hand to help guide them to some big wins too.

Team Profiles

This team was a perennial contender at NABA coming up in the Midget/Juvenile divisions a few years ago. However, they’re still searching for the win-ning formula for success in the Open division. Adding a few veterans to their young line up, they should compete and surprise the competition.

The Toronto-based Dragons squad has been a staple in the Asian basketball community thanks to their years of suc-cess. Perennial contenders at the annual NACBAIT (Chinese Nationals) tournament every May, expect the dynamic duo of Kenny Ao and Andrew Suen to lead the team’s trademarks of offensive execu-tion and hard-nosed defense.

TORONTO’S

T he 25-for-Life family would like to take this opportunity to recog-nize the following players for their outstanding achievements in their

basketball careers. We know that being part of our organization was just a small part of their

overall resumes, but we’ll always have an extra 25-for-Life uniform whenever they need it.

These guys helped put Toronto basketball on the map in the Philippines – helping open doors for those to follow. The T-Dot is a basketball factory and it’s about time people take notice.

AccolADes: Jon started his winning ways at Mother Teresa where he was an OFSAA 4A Champion. After one year at the University of Western Ontario, he left and went to the NCAA Finals three years in a row with San Sebas-tian College, winning a national title in the process. Currently running the point for Café France in the PBA D-League, making the PBA or ABL is what continues to drive him.

AccolADes: An uber-athletic swingman was a late bloomer of sorts. This former Unity Cup MVP had a short stint at Seneca College before leaving for the Philippines in late 2011. Now at Arellano University, he teams with his 25-for-Life brethren James Forrester to bring the Chiefs success in the 2012 NCAA season

AccolADes: The Man-Child is all grown up now. Since joining the 25-for-Life team at the age of 16, James has made a name for himself on the Asian basketball circuit. Known for his jaw-dropping dunks, his stops at Seneca College and IMG Academy (Florida) have led him to Arellano University alongside AJ Serjue.

AccolADes: This high-scoring combo guard made a name for himself in Mis-sissauga and parlayed that into stints at South Suburban College (Chicago, IL) and Missouri S&T. Now at Blackwater in the PBA D-League, he’s ready to declare for the PBA draft this summer.

Fueled by the partnership with a new sponsor, the San Miguel 25-for-Life squad has a lot to prove at the Unity Cup. A lot has changed since their championship showing back in 2008, but the winning ways continue despite new faces on the roster. Steadied by Coach Al Gregorio and the deadly JP Albano at the guard-spot, this team relies on a seemingly never-ending rotation of players that run hard, play defense and simply win games. These guys are on a mission to prove that the road to the championship still runs through 25 for Life.

The 2012 Phil-Can league champi-ons – this team is equipped with great guards and versatile forwards. They possess great outside shooting in their backcourt to go along with their athleti-cism in the front court. Not the biggest team out there but don’t be surprised to see these guys out-rebounding bigger opponents. One of the top Asian teams in Toronto – look for them do very well in this tournament.

The youngest team in the tourna-ment – this team is in its first year in the Open division. They are fresh off winning the Juvenile division at most recent Turkey Ball tournament over the Thanksgiving Holiday. Don’t sleep on these guys, as what they lack in size, they will make up for in their speed and long range shooting

The crew at KCAA has enjoyed a re-surgence over the last couple years, showing very well in a number of inter-city tournaments and leagues. Heralded swingman Danny Jeon brings his CIS-level skills to the table, while quarterback Jasen Kim can hurt you with dribble penetration or scoring on his own. Expect these guys to go deep into Sunday action.

A high-scoring team led by great guard play, this team will run up and down against any team in this tournament. Led by a few members of the PIBNA finalist team from Montreal, this team is loaded in the guard spots and pos-sess a deadly 1-3-1 defence in the half court. They should be one of the teams to watch and a contender for the title.

NY PBM is quite possibly the hottest team on the Asian basketball circuit right now. With wins in big tournaments at PIBNA (Jacksonville, FL) and the FABA Battle of the Champions (Wash-ington DC) over the last few months, there’s no doubt that this squad from the Big Apple is considered the favourite to win the Unity Cup. Of course, with guys like the uber-athletic Rashawn McCarthy and silky smooth Bobby Simpson on the roster – it’s easy to see why this team wins so much.

For years, opponents have been frus-trated trying to devise a game plan to stop the Titans famous inside game, forgetting that the roster includes a few sharpshooters that can hurt you from outside too. Highlighted by the beastly 6’9” James Chen in the post and the versatile 6’6” Carlos Andrade showcasing an inside-out game like no other, the Titans are the team that no one wants to play.
