February 20th · Common Denominator Forum UC Ballrooms A&B · 7:00PM UBS, the Office of Academic Enhancement, Caribbean Student Association, Organization for Jamaican Unity, African Student Union, and Haitian Student Organization are hosting Common Denominator on February 20th. The Common Denominator will be an interactive forum discussing colorism within the black community. Light refreshments will be served. February 23rd · BAM Day of Service Overtown Youth Center · 9:00AM Students will volunteer at the Overtown Youth Community Center, where they will host a tutoring session focused on preparation for the Florida’s Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) and a carnival for the participants with activities focused on Black history. The MSA Spotlight: BAM Opening Ceremonies! Opening Ceremonies for Black Awareness Month hosted by MSA and UBS took place on February 4th at 7:00PM in the Wesley Art Gallery. This event featured American spoken word artist Taalam Acey. Acey has been featured on BET, TV One, and has authored four books. Current UM students provided song, dance, visuals, and spoken word performances. Make sure to support the rest of BAM events! A Closer Look At BAM Opening Ceremonies!

Christel Kemeni spoke on his experience: “My favorite part was the spoken word by Talaam Acey. Honestly, I have never heard spoken work before and my first time experience was pretty nice. The way he was eloquently describing the scenarios and the way he was speaking was interesting.”

Janae Newman, co-chair of the event, stated “I am a big fan of Talaam Acey. His work is inspirational. He did a couple pieces related to black history, which brought the event full circle and spoke on other topics to show his broad range of talent. The audience was feeling it... everyone benefited from him being here.”
