EDUCATION AND THE ARTSYOUTH ENRICHMENT PROGRAM

EDUCATION ARTS

Highlights From Key National Research on Arts Education

-The opportunity to be instructed in music or dance disciplines offered a variety of compelling social benefits for students in addition to the knowledge and skill of an art. (source: Champions of Change)

-Juvenile Delinquent males ages 8-19 were given instruction in and performance opportunities on the guitar improved both their self confidence in terms of their musical ability and general self worth verses other juvenile delinquent males in the same age group given instruction but no performance opportunities.(source: Critical Links: Learning in the Arts and Student Academic and Social Development)

-Elements of music and reading are highly relative in first grade. Students were tested on various elements of music and reading and a strong relationship was found between a students awareness of pitch and their ability to sound out material in reading. Material that included standard language and phonetic material.(source: Educational Leadership “The Music in our Mind.”)

-At risk first graders who were taught basic letter and sound connections through improvisional movement improved more in those basic reading skills than did the control group of similarly at risk kids. (source: Critical Links: Learning in the Arts and Student Academic and Social Development)

-Teenagers serving time in detention facilities benefited from twice-weekly dance classes in ways that led the author to conclude patience, and sometimes even compassion, can be social by products of aesthetic engagement.( source: Critical Links: Learning in the Arts and Student Academic and Social Development)

• Program SummaryEducation and the Arts is a community based youth enrichment program that promotes responsible behaviors that strengthen the spirit of communities thru the Arts. We believe that strong communities build strong families We have focused our attention on the five core values that define basis our program. They are self respect, self esteem, self motivation, self discipline, which ultimately leads to know knowledge of self. We believe that in order to succeed in life, children must be able to have a positive relationship in the following four areas.

1. Self (with themselves)2. Friends (with individuals one to one)3. Family (with an intimate group)4. Society ( with a non intimate group)

The summer program will serve children from the ages of six to sixteen years old.
