Ernie Hudson Actor and ActivistErnie Hudson is a beloved star in film, television and stage with an impressive list of film credits and awards.

His road to fame, however, had its share of hardships. Hudson was born in poverty and raised in the housing projects of Benton Harbor, Michigan, in a time where civil rights had a long road ahead. The odds were more in favor of Hudson spending a life in prison than his having a successful life in Hollywood. Supported first and foremost by his grandmother who taught him patience and graciousness, Hudson dealt with the loss of his mother and the absence of a father, gaining the reputation of being the toughest kid in school, serving in the Marine Corps, attending Yale, raising his sons as a single father and overcoming racism in the entertainment industry.

why education?Art of Giving raises funds and awareness for United Way Suncoast Youth Education Initiatives, bringing together the resources and expertise to help put children on the path to graduation by providing support in and out of school so they can overcome barriers, catch up to their less-challenged peers and graduate ready for college or career. Since 2005, United Way Suncoast has invested more than $4.5 million in early literacy programs and services.

• A child unprepared for kindergarten is three times more likely to be behind in 4th grade.

• Research shows that nearly half of Suncoast-area children are not reading on grade level by 3rd grade.

• A child learns to read through 3rd grade, but must read to learn beginning in 4th grade.

• A child not reading on grade level by 4th grade is four times more likely to drop out of high school.

• An adult who does not graduate from high school earns 75% less over their lifetime, leading to long-term financial struggle.

• A family struggling with financial instability is less likely to focus on early literacy for the next generation. And the cycle continues.
