2014 -15 OFFICERS

As a Board, we recite our mission statement at the start of each meeting to assure our focus is firmly on our task at hand. Part of that job in the past year has been to examine our role to detail exactly how we can deliver on our highly important mission. We are working hard to ensure that you, our donors, know just what a difference you are making in our mission with your investment in our community. This is accomplished by using our community impact model with a focus on our building blocks for a good quality of life:

Education, Income and Health. This year we established our Key Influence Sectors of early learning, financial stability and healthy, safe living within these building blocks. This was done with the feedback from conversations with community leaders, county officials, donors, interested individuals and using Skagit County Health Statistics. Our journey to deliver on our mission requires partnerships, shared goals and meaningful measurements to show we have, in fact, made “Sustainable, Positive Change in People’s Lives.” Live United.

United Way of Skagit County focuses community investment to create sustainable, positive change in people’s lives.

First Planned Gift

She wanted to see the results of her legacy in action – Sue Krienen, United Way board member and a regional director for Shell, decided to split her One Million Dollar gift to United Way.  Half now and half as a bequest.  “It really makes sense to do (half ) now.  I want to see the impact on our community now and well into the future….that is the legacy I want to leave.”   She pledged $100,000 a year for the next five years, and another half a million in her will.  Sue’s gift funds coordination of Early Learning efforts so that ALL children in Skagit County are ready to learn when they start school.

2014-15 Financial Report

The time is now to build a planned giving program to strengthen early learning opportunities, encourage healthy choices in nutrition and exercise, and empower financial stability for all in Skagit County.  Gifts can be immediate or deferred:  bequests; life insurance; stocks & bonds; IRA or 401K distribution; and charitable trusts are some ways to leave a legacy.

“It always comes back to what you are passionate about...(through philanthropy), you are transmitting your hopes, and keeping them going in the future.” ~ Paul Allen

SEDRO-WOOLLEY High school

Helping teens develop positive connections to adults in the community, learn leadership skills and improve their self-confidence: these are the goals of Youth United. This United Way of Skagit County funded program brings youth volunteers into their community and instills the spirit of volunteerism into

Before Youth United I had no leadership experience but since being voted Vice President of the Burlington-Edison Youth United club, I knew it was a chance to make a difference. I not only wanted to establish myself as a role model for my high school but for my community. Youth United is a dedicated group of students making a large impact through their involvement in the community. This involvement has created a spirit of generosity in our younger generation, which will lead to a lifelong passion of giving back to our home.

a new generation. Youth United is currently offered at three high schools – Sedro-Woolley, Concrete, and Burlington-Edison – where students who volunteer at least 100 hours earn a Varsity Letter. Last year, over 80 students contributed over 4000 hours of volunteer work in their schools,

local business and nonprofits. Volunteer projects included preparing US troop care packages and cooking a meal for Friendship House guests. Students also volunteered at nonprofits including The Humane Society, Community Action’s Food Distribution Center, and local Boys and Girls clubs.
